MELVIN MEYER - The entire community which shared in the hope that Melvin Meyer might be restored to health, were deeply grieved to learn of his demise which occurred Tuesday in Uplands, California where he had gone in a heroic quest for improvement. Mr. Meyer had not been well for a year or more, and last summer he made the trip to Rochester, Minnesota, where he went through the Mayo clinic. Specialists there confirmed the analysis of his local physician—a streptococcic infection in the blood stream had set in with little or no hope of ultimate recovery. Everything known to human mind was done for him and thinking perhaps California’s sunny clime might be of benefit, Melvin, his wife and daughter Colleen [Coleen] and his father and mother Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meyer left Freeport last Friday night for that place. At Kansas City where a four hour wait was scheduled the attention of a physician was necessary. They continued their westward journey and had been in Uplands a day when Death overtook him instead of Life for which he and his friends and relatives so earnestly hoped. A telegram to his pastor, Rev. F. H. Schroer was received here Wednesday morning. Mr. Meyer was born Sept. 25, 1907 in Loran township and passing away Jan. 19, 1937 had reached the age of 29 years. His wife (Olga Mielke), a daughter Colleen Kay a year and a half old, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meyer, and one brother Orlo survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon from the late home at 1:30 p.m. and the Lutheran Church at 2, with the Rev. F. H. Schroer officiating. Burial...Highland cemetery.

"I'd drive to school in a horse-drawn buggy," Mrs. Moore had recalled. "The children would put the horse and carriage in the barn and it would stay there the whole day while I taught. During the interview, Mrs. Moore noted that she liked to see things change and had experienced no culture shock over the rapid advances in technology over the 100 years of her life. She had added however, that modern-day people were different form those who lived in the beginning of the century. "When you go into a new place, people won't welcome you like they used to," she had stated. "They used to be friendlier." Predeceased by her husband, Arthur, she is survived by her son, Ward and his wife, Viola, of Cedar Grove with whom she had lived for the last dozen years; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
