HENRY MOELLENBERNDT - Alice Horner’s note: This obituary used the Mellenberndt spelling, but all other references to him (other than censuses, which used many spellings) use the Moellenberndt spelling, including his wife Jane Moellenberndt’s in 1941. There were other members of this same family who used the Mellenberndt spelling, and he could have chosen to do so late in life. This obituary states that his wife died before him, but that was not true. They appear to have divorced, possibly around 1909. His parents were Conrad August and Anna Maria Wilhelmine (Mense) Moellenberndt.
Davis, Ill. – Henry Mellenberndt, 74, and a well known resident of this vicinity, was found dead in bed at his home in this village about 2 o’clock this afternoon. Mr. Mellenberndt had lived alone and when he had not been seen for several days neighbors went to the home and breaking in a rear door found the dead body in bed. It is thought from the condition of the body that the man had been dead for a couple of days.

Death resulting from a heart affliction was the verdict returned by a coroner’s jury investigating the death of Henry Mellenberndt, 74, who was found dead at his home in Davis yesterday. Testimony indicated that Mr. Mellenberndt had been suffering from a heart affection for the past three years. The indications were that he had been dead for a couple of days before being found. He was last seen by neighbors Monday morning. Yesterday when friends sought him and were unable to locate him they forced an entrance to the home and found him dead in bed.

Alice Horner’s note: The inquest may have failed for provide an exact date of death; the Illinois Statewide Death Index, 1916-1950 doesn’t show one for a Henry Mellenberndt, Moellenberndt, or anyone with a similar name who died anytime near January 5-8, 1930.
