MABEL C. (NATH) THOMAN - Service for Mrs. Boyd Thoman of 629 W. Avon St., who died suddenly in a local hospital Friday, will be in Walker Mortuary at 1:30 p.m. Monday. The former Mabel C. Nath was born in Rock Run Township Feb. 20, 1888, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nath. Her marriage to Boyd Thoman took place Aug. 14, 1907. They farmed in Winneshiek until moving to Freeport in 1929. They observed their golden wedding anniversary last month. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dallas of Rockford and Delmar of Freeport; four daughters, Mrs. Paul Salzman and Mrs. Burdette Hutmacher, borht of Freeport; and Mrs. Robert Quies and Mrs. O. V. Bradford, both of Rockford; three brothers, Paul of Baileyville, David of Davis and Melvin of Winnebago; one sister, Mrs. Earl Wiemer of Davis; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her parents, a daughter and a brother died previously. The Rev. Charles F. Lanwere, pastor of First Lutheran Church, will officiate at the funeral. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery.

GEORGE F. TIELKE - an area farmer most of his life, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in a Rockford nursing home after a 2-month illness. He was born January 5, 1888 in Davis, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Tielke. He married Lottie Harrington October 11, 1911 in Davis. Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. John Domino of Tucson, Arizona; a son, Albert of Rockford; one granddaughter; and two sisters, Mrs. Lulu Henze and Mrs. Laura Henze, both of Rock City. Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Chapin Funeral Home, the Rev. Virgil Smith, pastor of the Durand Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Davis Cemetery. Friends may call from 8 to 9 o’clock tonight at the funeral home.

ROY D. TILKEMEIER - Funeral service was held today in Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, Wisconsin for Roy D. Tilkemeier, who died Wednesday, August 9, 1967 in his Twin Grove, Wisconsin home. Burial was in Dakota Cemetery. Mr. Tilkemeier farmed in the Dakota and Twin Grove area until 1960 when he moved to Twin Grove. He was born at Dakota September 16, 1894, son of Fred and Anna (Messman) Tilkemeier. On January 22, 1914 he married Gladys Rockey at Rock Grove. Surviving are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. John Schoonhoven of Evergreen, Colorado, Mrs. Charles Beck of Villa Park, Mrs. George Edler of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Ralph Beck of Beloit, Wisconsin; two brothers, Clarence of Freeport and Lloyd of Dakota, and nine grandchildren.

LIZZIE (ADDAMS) TILTON died at Cedar Bluffs, Kansas, today and the body will be brought to Cedarville for burial Saturday noon. She was the youngest daughter of the late James H. Addams, formerly of Cedarville. She leaves a brother Austin Addams, of Rockford, and a sister, Mrs. Agnes Barker, of Avon, Wis.

EDNA (BROGE) TOELLE , 88, of Freeport died Monday, August 21, 2000 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. She was a resident of Freeport Manor Nursing Home for the last three years. She was born March 19, 1912 in Lena to Frank and Matilda Broge, and was educated in Lena schools. On September 30, 1939 she and Irvin H. Toelle were married in Lena. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Surviving are three daughters, Barbara (John) Baker of Galesburg, Lynne Kimball of Indianapolis, Ind., and Judy Toelle of Freeport; one son, Stephen (Vickie) Toelle of Bloomington; three grandchildren, Denise and Pam Toelle, and Brad Baker; several nieces and nephews and her close friends Bob and Eileen Diestelmeier. Preceding her in death were her husband, two sisters, one brother, four half-sisters and a half-brother. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Peace at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Stephen F. Precht of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Saturday to time of service in the chapel at the cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

HENRY C. TOELLE , 66, a lifelong resident of Freeport, died suddenly Saturday afternoon, February 3, 1940. Mr. Toelle was seized with a heart attack while downtown and died en route to a hospital. He resided at the New York Hotel. Funeral services will be conducted at the Eichmeier and Becker Funeral Home, West Stephenson Street, at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Edwin A. Arends, pastor of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, will conduct the services and interment will be made at Oakland Cemetery. Mr. Toelle was born in Freeport December 25, 1873, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Toelle, his parents having been pioneer residents of Freeport. He received his education here and was a tinner by trade, being employed by the Place Hardware Company. He was a charter member of the Tinners’ Union. His marriage to Margaret Hanke took place in Chicago December 26, 1894. Besides his wife he leaves the following children: Earl, Elmer, and Wilbur Toelle, Mrs. William Wienand, Mrs. Russell Loring, Mrs. Vincent Bogenrief, Mrs. Phillip Scanlon, all of Freeport; Mrs. Harlan Eberle of Peoria. One child preceded him in death. Three sisters survive: Mrs. John Bauscher, Mrs. Louisa Roth, Mrs. Fred Guenzler, all of Freeeport. Mr. Toelle was a well known musician and for many years was a member of the old Henney band. IRVIN H. TOELLE , 85, of Freeport died Tuesday, September 23, 1997 at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Born May 31, 1912 in Freeport, he was the son of Fredrick and Mary (Wenzelburger) Toelle. On September 30, 1939 he married Edna A. Broge in Lena. He grew up in Freeport and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1934. He was comptroller of Stephenson Service Company until retiring, and was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. “He was a wonderful person, husband, and father,” his children said. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Barbara (John) Baker of Madison, Wisconsin, Lynne Kimball of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Judy Toelle of Freeport; one son, Stephen (Vickie) Toelle of Bloomington; one brother, Alvin (Maxine) Toelle of Freeport; three grandchildren, Denise and Pamela Toelle and Brad Baker; and his close friends Bob and Eileen Diestelmeier. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Walker Mortuary with the Rev. Willis Schwichtenberg of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Saturday to time of service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

HENRY TSCHERNING , 69 and for many years a well known resident of Freeport, died suddenly at his home, 726 S. Adams avenue, about 5:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Tscherning was seated at the supper table when he was suddenly seized with a heart attack, passing away shortly afterward. He had been connected with the Arcade Manufacturing company since 1896, serving in the capacity of chief mechanical engineer. He was of an inventive nature and secured scores of patents on his inventions, which he assigned to the Arcade company. Funeral services will be held at the late home at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Dr. W. F. Rex, pastor of the First English Lutheran church, of which Mr. Tscherning was a member, will conduct the services and interment will be made at Oakland. Henry Tscherning was born in Denmark May 9, 1861. He was united in marriage to Miss Hilda Nelson, in Sweden, in 1887. On coming to America they resided in Chicago for some time. Mr. Tscherning came to Freeport in 1891 with the Union Manufacturing and Plating company, a concern which had existed some years in Chicago. He remained with that concern until 1896 when it ceased to do business and was taken over by the Arcade Manufacturing company. Most of the men employed by the Union company were engaged by the Arcade company and Mr. Tscherning continued with the latter concern continuously since that time, a period of nearly 34 years, constantly growing in experience and value to that company. He was a genius in the inventive field and many of the Arcade products are due to his ability. He had acted for many years as chief engineer and his experience and advice were highly appreciated and sought. His wife preceded him in death August 26, 1926. Two daughters, Lillian and ANna Tscherning, likewise preceded him in death. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. James THorpe, Mrs. Hjalmar Bryunston, Hugo Tscherning, all of Freeport. Mr. Tscherning was a man of high character and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. (Dated - June 9, 1930)
The funeral of the late Henry Tscherning will be held from the late home, 726 S. Adams avenue, at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Dr. W. F. Rex, pastor of the First English Lutheran church, will conduct the services and burial will be made at Oakland. Mr. Tscherning passed away Sunday evening at 5:45 o'clock. He was a well known and highly esteemed citizen of Freeport. Since 1893 he had been connected with the Arcade Manufacturing company, serving in the capacity of chief mechanical engineer. He at all times manifested a keen interest in his home, being a kind and loving husband and father and poured out his strength unstintingly for those he loved. Such a love naturally brought forth a similar love from those whose richest heritage will be the memory of his graciousness and tenderness. Those of the immediate family who survive are the following children: Mrs. James R. Thorpe, Mrs. Hjalmer Brynteson, Dorothy and Hugo Tscherning, Mrs. Frank Burckhardt, all of Freeport. There are also two grandchildren.

ANNA M. (KOTTMAN) TURNER , 98, formerly of 911 W. Galena died Thursday night at Freeport Manor Nursing Center following a long illness. She and her husband farmed in Harlem Township until retirement and then moved to Freeport. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Priscilla Club. She was born April 11, 1883, in the Red Oak area. She married Fred W. Turner Dec. 30, 1908, in Red Oak. He died Jan. 28, 1965. Surviving are nieces and nephews in the area. Service will be...Sunday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert W. Younts...officiating. Burial will be in Cedarville Cemetery...

BERTHA (MILLER) TURNER , 90, of 817 S. Float Ave., died today at Freeport Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of Park Hills Evangelical Free Church. Born Oct. 9, 1887, in Ridott, she was the daughter of O. F. and Elise (Martin) Miller. She married Elmer J. Turner in 1911 in Ridott. He died in 1952. [error, 1951] Surviving are one son, Warren of Ridott; one daughter, Mrs. Virgil Kramer of Orangeville; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Miss Elizabeth Miller; and one brother, George [Miller], both of Freeport. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. FRED TURNER , 911 W. Galena Ave., died Thursday afternoon in a local hospital. Turner and his wife farmed in Harlem Township until 1946 when they moved to Freeport. He was a member of First Methodist Church...Born July 12, 1883 [Aug 1885 per 1900 Census; 1884 per tombstone], in Ridott, ...son of John and Minnie (Brandt) Turner. He married Anna Kottman at Red Oak, Dec. 30 1908. Survivors...his wife and a sister, Mrs. Oscar (Florence) Moss, Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. JOHN F. TURNER - After a several weeks illness John F. Turner, 87, a lifelong resident of Stephenson county, passed away at a local hospital yesterday afternoon. For several years he had resided at the YMCA. Funeral services will be held at Second Presbyterian church, of which he was a member, at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. Anthony P. Landgral will conduct the services and interment will be made in City cemetery. Friends may call at the Walker mortuary until 10:50 o'clock Saturday morning and then at the church. Mr. Turner was born in Freeport Feb. 11, 1857, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Turner. He resided on a farm in Ridott township until 1911 and then moved to Freeport. He was married to Minnie Brandt in 1882, she passing away in 1901. He was again married to Mary Brandt in 1903, the latter passing away in 1926. He leaves a daughter and two sons, Mrs. Florence Moss, Dakota; Fred Turner, Harlem township; Elmer Turner, Ridott. There are 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A brother, William Turner, resides in Lancaster. A son, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

MARY (BRANDT) TURNER - aged 70 and wife of John Turner, passed away at a local hospital yesterday following an operation which was performed a few days ago. Funeral services will be conducted from the late home, 14 East Jefferson street, at...Thursday afternoon and at 2 o'clock from the Second Presbyterian church. Rev. Walker F. Vance will conduct the services and interment will be made in the city cemetery. Mary Brandt was a native of Stephenson county, having been born in Freeport on March 7, 1856, and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Brandt. She was united in marriage in March, 1903, to John Turner. They resided on a farm in Ridott township until about fifteen years ago, when they moved to Freeport...She is survived by her husband, John Turner, and three step-children, they being Mrs. Oscar Moss, Dakota; Fred Brandt, Harlem; Elmer Brandt, Ridott [error, should be Fred and Elmer Turner]. The following sisters and brothers also survive: Mrs. Matilda Stout, Freeport; Mrs. Lizzie Fink, Dakota [Chicago]; J. T. Brandt and Frank Brandt, both of Freeport; Charles Brandt, Harlem. Eight grandchildren also survive...

MINNIE (BRANDT) TURNER , died at her home in Ridott last evening at 8 o'clock of cancer. She was born in this city May 11, 1857, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brandt. She was married here March 30, 1882. She leaves to mourn her demise her husband and four children: Florence, Fred W., Elmer J. and Walter H., all at home. The funeral will be held from the house Monday at 12 o'clock and from the German Lutheran church here at 2 o'clock. Rev. A. O. Landeck will officiate. Interment will be in the city cemetery.

WARREN E. TURNER , 75, Ridott farmer and businessman, died Wednesday night, June 5, 1996, at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Son of Elmer J. and Bertha (Miller) Turner, he was born Feb. 16, 1921, in Ridott and graduated from Freeport High School in 1939. He and Thelma I. Fuchs were married Jan. 30, 1943, in German Valley. In addition to farming, he owned and operated Turner Pumps for many years and was Ridott Township Road Commissioner from 1971 to 1980. During World War II he served in the Navy. He was a member of German Valley United Methodist Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Freeport. Surviving family members include his wife; three daughters, Pamela (Bruce) Strohacker of Apple River, Trudi (Kenneth) Cuplin of Ridott and Vicki (Neil) Erickson of Sequin, Texas; one son, Gregory W. (Susan) Turner of Littleton, Colo.; seven grandsons; two great-grandsons; and one sister, Virgil Kramer of Orangeville. Cremation Rites were accorded.
