Out in West Point township,
About thirteen miles from here,
Is a town, they call it Lena,
It's been there some seventy years.
The Illinois Central goes through this town,
And they do lots of business up and down;
They haul lumber, coal and merchandise,
And lots of things you buy that's nice.
They also ship cattle, hogs and sheep,
And chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese -
Or anything you have to sell,
And with these buyers you do well.
They have an elevator there,
And buy the farmers' grain from everywhere,
Such as corn, rye, barley and oats,
Which makes good feed for hogs and shoats.
They also have two hardware stores,
They sell you nails, staples, and lots more -
Such as furnaces, ranges and stoves so fine,
And all kinds of tools in the carpenter's line.
And then they have two fine banks there,
And handle your money, with the best of care:
And a good lighting system they have there;
Also good fresh water everywhere.
Some dry goods, shoe and grocery stores,
Where you buy these things, and then some more;
Butcher shops where you get meat are there,
And barber shops too, where they cut your hair.
Garages and blacksmiths who never shirk,
Fix autos, shoe horses, and all repair work;
Now anything in this line you need,
Is done right up in style, and also with speed.
They sell you good farm machinery, too,
Right up to date, all nice and new;
And harness, rope, and binder twine,
In Lena you can always find.
They also have several fine churches there,
With Sunday, service all through the year,
Also a very fine high school,
With all the grades up to the rule.
They have a newspaper called the Lena Star,
Which gives all the news from near and far;
They advertise your business, too,
So hand in your ads and see what they'll do.
And so you see Lena is quite a town,
Just take your pencil and jot that down;
And if you don't believe just what I say,
Go there yourself, and see some day.
