99 Selectives Off Tomorrow to Camp Grant
Will be Stephenson County's 2nd Contribution to New Army
Whole City Prepares To Bid Them Godspeed
Demonstration in Their Honor to Be Held in Front of Court House Tomorrow Morning
Contributed by Karen Fyock
Ninety-nine stalwart youths, making up Stephenson county's "forty per centers" reported for service at the local selective board offices today and tomorrow they will move to Camp Grant, Rockford, where they will become a part of Uncle Sam's new national army. The young men were carefree and almost to a man stated that they were glad that the time had arrived when they became a part of the military establishment of the United States. Roll call was held and all the men responded to their names. They were then excused until 5:30 o'clock when retreat call will be the program. If the men so desire they will be guests of the government tonight at the Brewster hotel or if they want to they will be permitted to go to their homes. But all will report for duty tomorrow morning at 8:30 o'clock. The plans for the sendoff for the selected men have been completed. Tomorrow morning they will march in a body to the court house, where at 9 o'clock there will be a short program which will include a drill by the high school cadets and the presentation of colors to the cadets. The presentation will be made by State's Attorney Charles H. Green. The high school band and Masonic band have consented to be on hand, the former band will head the procession in the march to the depot. Following the band will be the high school cadets, immediately behind them will be the civil war veterans, the Masonic band and then the citizens. Every man, woman and child in the county is invited and requested and urged to be in the escort to the depot. A holiday has been declared. All of the retail stores in the city will be closed from 8:30 to 10 o'clock, for the day's work. This will give everyone an opportunity to participate in the events of the day. The committee in charge of the work did not have time to call upon all the retail merchants of the city but every one they did call upon readily and willingly agreed to close and those who were not called upon should be patriotic enough to close as it is their duty. People should not forget to display their flags in the windows of their business houses and every person should carry a flag. The men will entrain at the Illinois Central depot, their train leaving at 9:55 o'clock. A special car has been arranged for to carry the young men to camp.
