Hawley Cemetery Overview

Hawley Cemetery Sunken grave

Like so many cemeteries, it has been vandalized.
The 2 large ones surely didn't fall over on their own
as the base to both are large and level.
The tops had to have been pushed over.
Neglect and time is shown in the sunken graves.

Hawley Cemetery tipped over headstone

There is only 5 or 6 burials in this cemetery as far as we can tell. Only 2 stones are standing.
(There is one stone with  only the name Gideon Hawley on it so we do not know if it is a 3rd Gideon Hawley or if it is a 2nd stone for one of the other Gideon Hawley's)

Darlene Ireland looked up the Hawley's on the the internet and found the following:
Gideon Hawley, who is buried in this cemetery was born Aug. 13, 1797 in Farrisburg, VT., a son of Gideon and Levina Darrow Hawley.
He married Elizabeth Caldwell, who was born in KY., on Jan 14, 1802. She died on Nov. 16, 1883 in Nebraska.
They were the parents of 9 children. One of their children, a son named Gideon, who is buried in this cemetery.
Young Gideon was born July 15, 1843 and died Sept. 26, 1844.
We found a 3rd stone which had only the name "Gideon Hawley" inscribed. Perhaps a grandson?
Another son named Aaron Mason, born June 17, 1832. He died in Pekin, Jan. 12, 1834.
Norman Clinton Hawley, born in Pekin June 6, 1837, son of Gideon and Elizabeth, had a son,
named George A., born Jan. 25, 1874 died at age 3 months and 3days, buried here, also.
Gideon had a brother named George Leonard Hawley.

Norman married Mary E. Martin on April 1, 1866. Besides their son George A., they had at least 4 other children according to the 1880 census.
They had James M. age 13, twins Gideon L and Parisie age 10 and Freddie S. age 5years.
Also living with then in the 1880 census was Mary's niece Susan E. age 13years.
Martin and Mary's mother: Ellen Martin, then 38, born in PA.
Ellen and James P. Martin, Mary's father, are buried in this cemetery. James P. died in 1880.
Mary Martin Hawley and Norman Clinton Hawley had at least 4 other children besides George A.,
James 1857-1934, Gideon Leonard 1868 -1914, Ellen 1870 and Fred S. 1875.

Norman died Aug. 13, 1918 in Jacksonville Hospital, Jacksonville, IL.
In the 1860 census, Mary E. Martin was listed as age 13. Besides her parents, there were Thomas, age 26 and James age 24, listed.
We did not find a stone for Norman or his wife Mary in this cemetery.

Darlene found that there were several Martins living in Sugar Creek, Logan County, Illinois.
