LINDSEY CEMETERY

In 1833 and 1834, James Alfred Lindsey accumulated 640
acres of
land surrounding this Cemetery for the
purchase price of $1.25 per acre.

In 1834, James, his wife Jean, and their 11 children moved
here  from Christian County, Kentucky.  Felix Erastus, the
twelfth child, was born in Tazewell County in 1835.
Born in 1793 near Raleigh, N.C., James was the son of a
Revolutionary War Veteran.  He married Jean Scott in
Christian County, KY in 1814, after he returned from
the war of 1812 in which James' firsthe served as the company
musician.  Originally a Baptist minister, he became a Disciple
of Christ after studying the teachings of Alexander
Campbell.  One of Elder James' first sermons was performed
at the home of Thomas Railsback, 5 miles west of Mackinaw.
Church history credits him with performing the first baptism
in Tazewell County.  He and his family established a
Congregation at Mt. Pleasant, which was renamed the
Mackinaw Christian Church.  Son John (1821-1887) was one
of the co-founders of Eureka College, which was chartered by
the Illinois Legislature in 1855.  Eureka college, first in the state
and the third in the nation to admit men and women on an
equal basis, boasts 40th President Ronald Reagan as one of
it's graduates.  James Alfred is the oldest of 6 generations of
Lindseys to be buried in this cemetery.
