Stein's Suicide
Full Particulars of the Tragedy in Tazewell County-The
Inquest
The body of Jacob Stein was brought to Peoria yesterday
afternoon and the funeral will probably take place on Sunday.
The inquest was held at East Peoria, and in addition to the
circumstances obtainable yesterday the
following facts were learned by a Tazewell county scribe:
- "It seems that Stein was seen in East Peoeria on
Wednesday
evening and again about nine o'clock yesterday morning. He was seen
walking over the Groveland road and near what is known as Groveland
Hill met a boy, of whom he requested the loan of a lead pencil with
which to write a note. The boy informed the man he had no pencil, when
Stein left him and climbed over a barb-wired fence on the right side of
the road, going down a slope which hid him from view of people passing
along the road. About 10 o'clock a man harrowing near by sent his
children out to gather some wood, when they came acorss the man lying
against a tree. The children went up to the man and not receiving any
answer from him made a closer investigation and found him dead. They
ran back and told their father of what they had seen and he,
accompanied by a neighor, went to the spot where the man was lying.
They found, as the children had stated, the man, dead, and in a clum of
brush near at hand a four-ounce vial labeled carbolic acid. In the
bottle were a few drops of acid and from the condition of the label
showed that the drug had been purchased quite lately from Zimmerman's
drug store in Peoria. The acting coroner arrived in East Peoria shortly
after noon and empaneling a jury held an inquest over the ramins. A
verdict was returned in accorance with the above facts.Mr. Stein at one
time resided in Eureka, but two years ago, after the death of his wife,
moved to Peoria. A family of five children survive the deceased.
This was the
article in the Peoria Star. The last part about his wife dying is
incorrect. He left a widow and five children.
Note: Jacob Stein was born in Germany and came to America in
1876.
He and his wife Wilhelmenia had five children, the oldest being born in
Germany.
He was a tailor by trade. His daughter Martha (Margaret) was
my grandmother.
Thanks Paula!
