An Old Time Reminiscence
At an old settler's reunion at Elm Grove, Tazewell county, on New Year's day, some
interesting reminiscences were told, among others this:
Martin Mier, with the Dulon and Hodgson families came to this country from Ohio 50 years ago, and consequently they have witnessed its growth from a wilderness to a rich and populous country. In the year 1826 or 1827, these gentlemen determined to select a site for a town.  So meeting one day at Wesley city, they searched along the banks of the Illinois for a suitable spot.  After careful consideration they chose the very place upon which Pekin is built, as offering more natural advantages than any other location on the river, hence they called it the "town site,' and patiently waited for the city which development of the country would certainly bring.
Mr. Absolom Dillon was the first merchant who sold goods in Pekin. Mr. Miers was a soldier in the Black Hawk war, and was with Major Perkins when he was killed.
