Union County Illinois Genealogy Trails Contributed by Kay Hammer ![]() Pictured are: Carrie Alice and Thomas W. Griffith and children. Left to right: Floyd, Randal, Dorothy, Ralph, Vey and Arilla. Thomas William Griffith
was big into farming and orchards. He and his wife, Carrie Alice lived
on the Old Toledo Cemetery Road in Union County. They had the
following children:
Ralph Waldo married Emma Benham and took over the farm of Miles Ansel Benham, Emma's father. They lived north of Cobden on the farm at the top of Poole Hill across from the Ralph Rich farm. They were big flower growers as well as orchardists and truck farmers, tomatoes being one of their big crops. They had their own hot beds that my dad, Clovis Childers, would watch over in order that they had the earliest tomatoes in the area and had a contract with stores in Wisconsin. Their flowers were shipped all the way to Chicago and Florida. They were growers of both daffodils and peonies. Arilla Marie married Lloyd Spiller and lived past the Benham farm and were growers of flowers, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables. Lloyd Spiller was also a mail carrier for the Cobden area until he retired. Dorothy Janet married an engineer whose last name was Norris. They lived in Anna. Dorothy's husband engineered and laid out quite a few of the streets of Anna. His family it was told lived in a large brick home in the area toward the Anna State Hospital (now Choate Mental Health Center). They supposedly sold the state the property that the Mental Health Center now resides on. Essie Vey married Richard Pyatt. They owned a funeral home in Pinckneyville, IL and lived there until her death. William Randall married Ardella and lived in Jonesboro. He was a diesel mechanic who worked on the Alaskan Highway. Ardella was a nurse. Floyd Russell married Helen Wiley and lived in Anna. He and Helen owned and operated Wiley Book Store. |
