DONALD L. CAMPBELL



CARMI, ILL. - DONALD L. CAMPBELL, 68, of Carmi died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. He was born in Anna, Ill., was a White County, Ill., businessman and retired as an owner and operator of Campbell Funeral Homes in Carmi and Norris City, Ill., where he was employed from 1954 to 1993. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon; Rotary Club; Masonic Lodge No. 272; and American Legion Post No. 224, all of Carmi. He was also a member of the Illinois and National Funeral Directors Association.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Joyce Campbell; a son, David B. Campbell of Carmi; four daughters, Deborah Price of Owensboro, Brenda Bernard of Belle Rive, Ill., Diana Jordan of Parker, Colo., and Cynthia Donna Knight of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Helen Ruth Cain of Carmi.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

HOMER "SOUP" CAMPBELL

Anna, IL--Homer "Soup" Campbell, 82, of Anna died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at City Care Center in Cobden, IL.
He was born March 6, 1925 in Balcom, IL, son of Homer and Zona Lingle Campbell, Sr.  He and Nadine Swafford were married Feb. 29, 1948 in Tupelo, Miss.
Campbell was manager at Kimmel Auto Supply 30 years.  He was a member of First Christian Church and Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455.  
He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine; a son, William Campbell of Anna; a daughter, Vicki Bible of Anna; and eight grandchildren, including Nicole Earnhart of Springfield, IL, whom he raised.
Visitation will be from noon to service time Monday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Clifford Heil officiating.  Burial will be in Big Creek Cemetery, with military honors conducted by VFW Post 3455.



GLADYS R. CANERDY



BATON ROUGE, LA–GLADYS R. CANERDY--Died 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 1991, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. She was 81, a native and resident of Cobden, Ill., and resident of Baton Rouge. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Religious services at Lutz Rendleman Funeral Home, Cobden, Ill., Saturday. Burial in Cobden Cemetery.
Survived by two daughters, Elsie M. Ashby, Bradenton, Fla., and Helen V. LaHaye, Baton Rouge; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was affiliated with United Pentecostal Church.

ROY CANTRELL




Roy Cantrell, 67, 715 Annavista Rd., Anna, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at Union County Hospital in Anna.  He was
born June 8, 1906 to George and Stella Harris Cantrell.  Mr. Cantrell married the former Patricia Daniels May 31, 1960, in Murphysboro. 
Surviving are his wife; a son, Roy Jr. of Fort Wayne, Ind,; a stepdaughter, Geraldine Spiller of West Memphis, Ark.;
a sister, Vinnie Willyerd of Jonesboro; a brother, Woodrow of Riverview, Mich.; and three granddaughters.
 Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at McCarty Funeral Home in Anna with the Rev. George Young officiating.
Burial will be Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ROY THOMAS CARLISLE


Anna, IL--Roy Thomas Carlisle, 76, of Anna, died Sunday, August 14, 1994 at Jackson County Nursing Home in Murphysboro.
He was born June 20, 1918 in Anna, the son of Roy G. and Elma Beatrice Randall Carlisle.
Carlisle was a retired banker.
Survivors include a son, Steve Carlisle of Woodstock, GA; two daughters, Cherie Honour of Atlanta, GA; Marlene Hullender of Woodstock and four grandchildren.
Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna from 6-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Shacklee officiating.  Burial will be in Anna Cemetery.


CURTIS D. CARMACK



ST. PETERSBURG, FL–CURTIS D. CARMACK, 85, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (July 23, 1996) at Columbia Edward White Hospital. He was born in Anna, Ill., and came here in 1960 from Cape Girardeau, Mo. He retired in 1973 after 12 years as a surveyor for the engineering department of the city of St. Petersburg. He was a member of Thirtieth Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mildred Carmack.

Lucille Carson

 Lucille Carson, 82, of Darien, formerly of Anna, Ill., died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Ill.
She was born Feb. 10, 1919, at Anna, daughter of Ira and Rose Leora Bostain Colboth. She and the late Clarence "Kit" Carson were married June 29, 1950. He died March 12, 1986.
She was a laborer in a camera factory. She was a member of the Big Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Bill D. Hammon of Woodridge, Ill.; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, two sisters and a brother.
Friends may call at Crain Funeral Home in Anna from 4-7 p.m. Friday.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Bill Darnell will officiate with burial in St. Johns Cemetery.



BEULAH CARTER



Anna, IL--Mrs. Beulah Carter--Funeral service for Mrs. Beulah Carter of Anna will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Crain Funeral Chapel here.  Rev. Jack Wolfe will officiate, with burial in Ebenezer Hall Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Saturday.  
Mrs. Carter, 92 years old, died Thursday, February 25, 1988.  She was born October 1, 1895 in Union County, daughter of James Robert and Louisa Osborne Bullington.  She married Ernest A. Carter Sept. 28, 1934.  He died June 5, 1967.
Mrs. Carter was a member of the United Methodist Church here, had been treasurer of the Daughters of Wesley Sunday School Class and for many years was treasurer of Ebenezer Cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Bessie Vancil of Evergreen Park; nieces and nephews.


CHARLES W. CASEY



Charles W. Casey, age 80, of Rock Island, (IL) died at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 1994, at Rosewood Care Center in Moline.
He was born February 16, 1913 in Union County, the son of Jesse and Luella Montgomery Casey.  He married Helen Casleton December 6, 1941 at Farmington, Mo.
Mr. Casey was a retired Illinois State Policeman, serving 24 years.  He retired in 1974 as a lieutenant.  He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 41, Illinois Police Association, TPA, Retired State Police Association, and a member of the executive board for the Illinois Police Association for 31 years.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II.  His hobbies were gardening, camping and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Patricia Casey of Avon, CO; a son, Gerald Casey of Naperville, IL; a sister, Mildred Smoot of Dongola, and three grandchildren, Kristine Casey of Naperville, Jessica Cuny and Casey Cuny, both of Avon, CO.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14 at the Elkville Cemetery with Rev. Insook Hwang officiating.
Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin was in charge of arrangements.

ADA CASPER

Anna, IL.--Ada Mae Casper, 90, of Anna died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007 at Union County Hospital in Anna.
She was born Oct 20, 1916 at Anna, daughter of Everett and Media Caraker Hill.  She and Murvin Casper were married June 23, 1961 at Anna.  He died Jan. 4, 1993.
Casper was a member of First Baptist Church and Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455 Auxiliary.
Survivors include two step-children, Donna Brewer and Mike Casper, and stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 24, 2007) at the funeral home, with the Rev. Roy Hill officiating.  Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery near Dongola, IL.


ELLEN OWEN CASPER



    Ellen Owen Casper was born January 3, 1856. She was a daughter of Nancy Elizabeth and Green Owen. She departed this life April 25, 1924 at the home of her daughter, Mrs Charles Klein, in Memphis, Tenn. She was married to John Marshall Casper January 28, 1874, who preceded her in death 24 years ago.
     To this union was born twelve children, two dying in infancy. The remaining ones are: Mrs. S.L. Humphrey of Herrin, Ill., Mrs. C. E. Harris of Jonesboro, Ill., Mrs. T. L. Smith of this city, Mrs. Chas. Klein of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. H. H. Mills of St Louis, Mo., Walter of Cobden, Ill., Howard and Adolphus of this city, Paul of Cairo, Ill., and George of Carbondale, Ill. Besides these children she leaves one sister, Mrs M. L. Hanford of Bakersfield, Calf., 34 grandchildren and one great grandchild, together with a host of friends to morn her departure.
   Mrs. Casper was a member of the Christian church, a devout Christian and a loving mother.
   The remains were brought to Anna last Saturday at noon and taken to the home of her son Adolphus Casper, on Kohler avenue, where they were held until Sunday at 2:30, when funeral services were held at the Christian church, conducted by Rev. T. J. Hollman. Interment was in the Anna Cemetery.

DR. GEORGE E. CASPER



ANNA -- Dr. George E. Casper, 94, died 10:17 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born April 6, 1916, in Anna, the son of Howard Henry and Cecile Boswell Casper. He married Etoile Winston on June 3, 1939, in Memphis, Tenn.
George is survived by two sons, Curtis (Jean) Casper of Goreville and Robert (Laura) Casper of Overland Park, Kan.; one daughter, Jean Casper (Dale) Denny of Anna; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Etoile; brothers, Howard Russell and Robert Edgar Casper.
George was a graduate of Southern Illinois Normal University with a bachelor's degree in music education and University of Michigan with a Master's in music education. He was an excellent musician and proficient in conducting, creating musical arrangements and playing the piano, violin, baritone, flute, clarinet and percussion. For six years he taught high school music and Latin in Zeigler. In the early 1950s he was band director for Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.
His doctoral studies in music education at University of Iowa were interrupted by World War II service. As a U.S. Army band member, leader and instructor, he was assigned to various posts in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. After his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., as a doctor of optometry. In 1952, George opened his optometric practice in Anna and served his many patients in the community for more than 40 years.
Except for his time in Memphis and in the service, George was a lifelong member of Anna First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and adult Sunday school teacher. He, along with his wife, Etoile, the church organist, served as the music ministry team at the church for more than 40 years.
In 2008, George and Etoile moved to Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau. In June 2008, they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
Services for Dr. George E. Casper will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, in Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with the Rev. Verlee Eaker officiating. Interment will be in Anna Cemetery with military honors at the graveside by Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of VFW in Anna and Illinois National Guard Honors Team.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association .

OPAL CASPER



ANNA -- OPAL CASPER, 98, formerly of Dongola, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, in Anna Rehabilitation and Care Center.
She was born April 28, 1912, in Dongola to Preler and Ruth (Montgomery) Douglas. She married Alfonzo "Fonzy" Casper on May 8, 1942. He preceded her in death March 15, 1982.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Dongola. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Dianne (Jerry) Reppert of Anna; two granddaughters, Tyra (Bryan) Johnson of Cape Girardeau and Shannon (Mark) Heisserer of Jackson, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Emily Heisserer.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, in Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today in Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro, with the Rev. Randy Carstens officiating. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery.

CONRAD D. CASSEL



TISKILWA, IL -- CONRAD D. “CONNIE” CASSEL, 79, of 600 E. Main St. died at 11:52 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 1993, at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton.
Born Aug. 26, 1914, in Anna to Alonzo and Hulda Mae Dillow Cassel, he married Eunice Turner Compton on Dec. 10, 1938, in Benton, Mo. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Clarence of Tiskilwa; one brother, John of Anna; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Anna Mae) Winn of Anna and Mary Jane Lingle of Washington; six grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.
He farmed in Tiskilwa for many years. He later was a carpenter, retiring in 1976.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jensen Funeral Home in Princeton. The Rev. Robert A. Hatcher will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Bloom Cemetery in Tiskilwa.

JOHN C. CASSEL

Anna, IL--John C. "Pa" Cassel, 95, of Anna, died Thursday, July 12, 2007 at Union County Hospital.
He was born June 6, 1912 in Anna, son of Alonzo and Hulda Dillow Cassel.  He and Anna E. Headrick were married Oct. 10, 1940 in Cape Girardeau, MO.
Cassel was a lifelong farmer and a member of Anna Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Evelyn Cox of Anna; a sister, Anna Winn of Anna; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, a sister and two grandsons.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time today at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today (July 14, 2007) at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Roath officiating.  Burial will be in Anna Cemetery.

PAT L. CHAMNESS



Pat L. Chamness, age 54, of Anna died at 11:54 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 1994, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO.
She was born December 6, 1939 in Herrin to Michael and Hattie Houghlan Rolando.  She married Bob Chamness on July 27, 1957 in Anna.
Mrs. Chamness was a member of Anna United Methodist church, the Illinois Health Care Association and the Illinois Health Planning Board, and had been Democratic precinct committeewoman in Anna and Union County Democratic chairwoman.  She and her husband owned City Care Center, the Village Inn, J. R.'s Center and Countryside Terrace.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; a daughter, and son-in-law, Beverly and Rick Tweedy of Anna; a son and two daughters-in-law, Matt and Tracy Chamness and Terri Partridge, all of Anna and six grandchildren.
Her parents and a son, Mark, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Richard Sullins and Rev. Jimmy Keller officiating.  Interment will be in the Casper Cemetery.

Anna, IL--Billy Chapman, 71, of Anna died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, IL.
He was born Feb. 7, 1936 in Anna, son of Lowell and Mamie Evans Chapman.  He and Sharon Highland were married Dec. 25, 1955.
Chapman was employed by the city of Anna as sexton of the city cemetery for 30 years.  He was a life member of Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Kenny Chapman of Jonesboro, IL; a daughter, Kris Treat of Anna; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and a grandson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Crain Funeral Home in Anna.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday (Dec 10, 2007) at the funeral home, with the Rev. Scott Kelley officiating.  Burial will be in Anna City Cemetery.

HARRY S. CHESTER



OWENSBORO, KY–HARRY S. CHESTER, 73, of 4426 Strickland Drive, Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 1989, in Owensboro. He was born in Anna, Ill.; was a retired religious music and education minister; and was a member of First Baptist Church of Leitchfield and a veteran of World War II and the United States Army Air Force Weather Service.
Survivors include his wife, Louetta Chester.
Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Owensboro. Burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 2-8 p.m. today at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home.

FAYE L. CHILDERS



ELGIN, IL--Funeral services for FAYE L. CHILDERS, 75, of Elgin, will be held in Jonesboro, Ill., at Hileman and Parr Funeral Home.
Born July 8, 1922, in Jonesboro, Ill., the daughter of Harrison and Vie (Nee: Arnold) Wheaton, she died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Burial will be in Anna City Cemetery, Anna, Ill.
Mrs. Childers was a member of First Baptist Church Fellowship Group and attended Larkin Ave. Baptist Church.
Survivors include her two daughters, Brenda (Tom) Griffey of Anna, Ill. and Ada (Rob) Newby of Elgin; two sons, Leo (Patsy) Childers of Dongola and Leon (Sue) Childers of Hampshire; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Angelly of Brookport, Ill., Ida Jane Childers of Plato Center and Florene Smith of St. Louis, Mo.; and one brother, Luther Wheaton of Goreville, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four brothers.

MRS. LAURA CHILDERS



Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Childers were held from the Baptist Church Tuesday with Rev. Kenneth Hall officiating.  Mrs. Childers had reached the ripe old age of four score and four, 84.  She was born in Bloomfield, MO, and came to Illinois in her girlhood days.  Some years later she was united in marriage with Elijah Childers of Alto Pass.  To this union ten children were born.  She was a Christian mother who was devoted to her home and her family and her church.  Her life was a busy one, toiling early and late for her loved ones.  She was a member of the Alto Pass Baptist Church.  After the death of her husband several years ago, she went to live with her children, who tenderly cared for her until death.  She is survived by the following children:  daughters, Cora, Tabitha, Carrie, May and Floy; sons, Ed and Jesse.  Three girls, Myrtle, Synda, and Cynthia proceded her in death.  She is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was laid to rest in the Alto Pass Cemetery beside her husband and children that had preceded her in death.  --Jonesboro Gazette, 24 Jan 1936; contributed by Kay Hammer.

Clyde Lee Choate


Clyde Lee Choate, 81, of Anna died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Ill.
He was born June 28, 1920, at West Frankfort, Ill., son of James I and Grace Ellen Brown Choate. He and Madonna Ross were married May 10, 1947, at Carbondale.
Clyde was a veteran of World War II, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, a member of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, life member of the Anna VFW Post 3455, member of the Anna American Legion Post 344, member of the Anna Elks Lodge No. 1641, member of the Anna Masonic Lodge 520, member of the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion. and member of the Illinois Veterans Commission. He was also a member of the Illinois legislature from 1947 to 1977, where he served as minority and majority leader. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Illinois in 1972 and director of external affairs at SIU-Carbondale.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Elizabeth Ellen Wood of Carbondale and Kim Hughey of Anna; three sisters, Creta Yates of Jonesboro, Dortha Ballance of Anna and Ethel Marie Marlow of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, Thomas E. Adams of Anna; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Ruth Irvin, Florence Craft, Gladys Lawrence, Ivern Fuller and Mary Angelo; and two brothers Melvin and Orean Choate.
Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna after 5 p.m. Wednesday and at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Anna after 10 a.m. Thursday. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John Marlow will officiate, with burial in Anna City Cemetery.

Jonesboro, IL.--Ruth Lois Choate, 94, of Jonesboro died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007 at City Care Center in Anna, IL.
She was born Nov. 16, 1912 in Goreville, IL, daughter of William H. and Edna Grace Howell.  she and James Melvin Choate were married Feb. 16, 1931 in Jonesboro.  He died Oct. 11, 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Casey of Jonesboro; two sons, Robert Choate of Carbondale, IL and Donald Choate of Jonesboro; a brother, Marvin Howell of Dongola; a sister, Golda Brown of Anna; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 1, 2007) at the funeral home with the Rev. Joe Aldridge officiating.  Burial will be in Jonesboro Cemetery.

VIRGIL H. CHOATE


KANSAS CITY, KS–VIRGIL H. “RED” CHOATE, 67, Kansas City, Kan., died Nov. 22, 1992, at Bethany Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Highland Park Chapel; burial in Highland Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel. Mr. Choate was born in Wolf Lake, Ill., and moved to this area 40 years ago. He was a foundry worker for the Fairbanks Morse Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Local 4991 of the United Steelworkers union. He was a Baptist. His wife, Mary I. Choate, died in 1983.
Survivors include three sons, Bill J. Choate and Michael E. Choate of Kansas City, Kan., and Lonnie D. Choate, Independence; five daughters, Lil Perry, Keosauqua, Iowa, Linda Roncal and Marilyn K. Davis of Kansas City, Kan., and Connie A. Kays and Mary Jane Poland of Overland Park; two brothers, Charles E. Choate, Versailles, Mo., and John Choate, Overland Park; a sister, Freda Shine, Kansas City, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
