HISTORY

The V-2682nd Company, CCC, originated at Camp Herod on August 6, 1935.
At present, this veteran company is stationed at Camp Union in the State Forest of the
Shawnee National Forest, just eight miles from Jonesboro, Illinois.
In the course of its history, V-2682nd Company, CCC has had the following Commanding Officers:
Capt. Albert L. Cape, Inf. Res., August, 1935-December, 1935.
First Lieut. F. H. Kelly, Inf. Res., December 1935-February, 1936.
Capt. H. F. Osborne, Sig. Res., February 1936-August, 1936.
Lieut. L. B. Jaudon, U. S. N. R., August 1936-May, 1937.
Lieut. Clifford Ramback, U. S. N. R., present Company Commander.

This company was one of the first to be called to flood duty.  Its first assignment was at Mound City, Illinois, where the Ohio River threatened the levee.  The river finally broke through and forced the veterans to take refuge in the second story of the Court House.  Government rescue boats brought the men from Mound City down the Ohio River to Cairo, Ill., to continue their battle with the Ohio.
For seventeen long days the men fought side by side with other rescue workers and finally won out.  The hard and dependable work of the veterans won commendation from both Army and public officials.  Fro this good work they were the first to be relieved when the danger had passed.
Those of the company who were not fighting the flood were working at Anna, Illinois, rushing construction on a flood refugee camp to house 2,000 people.
When these emergencies had passed, the men returned to their regular routine of work.  This consists of building roads through the scenic hills of this district, planting trees, fighting fires, maintaining roads and working in the State Nursery and State Farm, adjacent to the camp.
Camp Union has been greatly beautified by the veterans and is looked upon as a show spot in this section of the state.
There is still much to be done in the way of building recreation centers or picnic grounds in the forest, wild life preserves, roads and the maintenance of roads.  Besides this program, the men are ever ready for emergencies such as fighting fires and flood duty.
The surrounding communities are perfect in harmony and cooperation with the veterans and feel that in the very near future, Camp Union will be one of the beauty spots of this section of the country.
