TAVARES, FL--AMOS FRANK SANFORD, 86 . . . RETIRED BANKER--
MR. SANFORD, 2607 Vindale Road, Tavares, died Thursday, April 9. He was a retired banker from Anna, Ill.
Born in Anna, he moved to Central Florida in 1979. He was a member of Tavares Church of Christ. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, served as exalted ruler for the Elks Club and as a president of the American Legion, both in Anna. He also served on the Jonesboro National Bank Board of Directors in Illinois, and was a president and chairman of Anna National Bank. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors: wife, Lorene; daughters, Elise, Middletown, Calif., Dorothy Shinn, Decatur, Ill., Betty Minton, West Frankfort, Ill.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

ERLINE B. SAUERBRUNN



SEAFORD, DEL –ERLINE B. SAUERBRUNN, 73,  of Seaford died of cancer Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Peninsula Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. She was 73.
Mrs. Sauerbrunn was born in Anna, Ill., the daughter of the late Roy J. and Imogene Byrd Boyd. She was raised in Anna, Ill.
She was a homemaker and a volunteer manager of the Hospitality Shop for the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years.
Mrs. Sauerbrunn was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Seaford.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert D. Sauerbrunn; a son, Steven R. Sauerbrunn of Wilmington; a daughter, Sharon S. Judge of Doylestown, Pa.; a brother, Richard Boyd of Ashburn, Va.; a sister, Dorothy Ann Kelley of Jonesboro, Ill.; and five grandchildren.
Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Methodist Church, Pine and 3rd Streets, Seaford. The Rev. David Humphrey will officiate.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at Cranston Funeral Home, 300 Shipley St., Seaford.
Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear.

NEW PORT RICHEY, FL–HAL SCARSDALE, 87, of New Port Richey, died Friday (May 8, 1998). Born in Anna, Ill., he came here two years ago from Leesburg and was a retired security guard and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a son, William VanBuskirk, Leesburg; and a sister, Gene Hutchinson, Burlington, Wis.

MRS. MEDA SCARSDALE



    Mrs. MEDA SCARSDALE, daughter of POWELL and MARTHA BOSWELL TOLER, was born November 1875, in Union County, Illinois, and passed away at the Union County Hospital in Anna, November 15, 1967.
    Mrs. Scarsdale was united in marriage to ED SCARSDALE  on May 3, 1915, at St. Louis, Mo.  He preceded her in death on March 23, 1954.  She had spent most of her life in Union County and for the past fourteen years, she had made her home with her niece, Mrs. LELA CLAYTON of Simpson, Ill.  Her only survivors are a number of nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at the McCarty Funeral Home in Anna, Saturday, November 18, 1967, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. J. G. WHITESIDE officiating.  Interment was in the Ebenezer (Hall) Cemetery.  McCarty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

SHARON SCHAEFER

Wolf Lake, Ill.--Mrs. Sharon Kay Turkington Schaefer, 64, of Wolf Lake died at 4:20 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007 at her home.
She was born April 23, 1943 in Anna, IL, daughter of Alfred Ray and Lucille Boyd Turkington.  She married Gerhardt T. "Jerry" Schaefer July 4, 1970 in Anna.
A devoted wife and mother, Sharon was also very active in both public service and community activities, and she was a committed and successful businesswoman.  She was part-owner and co-manager of Schaefer Enterprises of Wolf Lake for 37 of its 40 years.
She served as chairperson of the Wolf Lake Park committee and Wolf Lake Homecoming committee, secretary/treasurer of the Ware-Wolf Lake Fire Department, vice president of the Union County Housing Board, and a founding member; board member and officer of National Tractor Parts Association, as well as chairperson of its Scholarship committee.
Sharon was always active in fundraisers of all kinds, including the American Cancer Society and school activities through the years, and she made sure that Schaefer Enterprises had ads in yearbooks and bought 4-H livestock at the Union County fair.  She also worked closely with the Wolf Lake Swamp Rats 4-H Club, but closest to her heart was the Christy Lynn Schaefer Scholarship which she administered for Shawnee High School in memory of their daughter.
Sharon is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Schaefer of Wolf Lake; a daughter, Lisa Jane File of Indianapolis; a son, William Schaefer of Aurora, Ill; a sister, Elsya Lea Elbert and husband, Sam of Indianapolis.
Also numerous in-laws, including Elizabeth Thoenen and Bob and Esther Schaefer of Bonnots Mill, Mo., Albert Schaefer of McPherson, Ks, Joan and Leo Fisher of Thebes, IL; Lillian Luckenotte and Jim and Susan Evers of Holts Summit, Mo., Eugene and Bonnie Schaefer of Cypress, IL; Dick and Kay Schaefer of Wolf Lake, Tom and Susan Schaefer of Columbia, Mo; special uncles and aunts, Raymond and Violet Boyd of Jonesboro, Il and Carl and Jane Verble of Indianapolis.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Christy Lynn Schaefer; her parents; and grandparents, Jess and Hattie Turkington and R. L. and Hattie Boyd.  
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 p.m. to service time Sunday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.
The funeral for Sharon Kay Schaefer will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 18, 2007) at the funeral home with the Rev. John Prather officiating.  Cremation will follow the service.


MELVIN W. SCHLICHTING

Anna, IL.--Melvin W. Schlichting, 84, of Anna died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007 at Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.  
He was born June 30, 1923 at Wittenberg, MO, son of Karl and Marie Mangels Schlichting.  He and Frances Deming were married Feb. 7, 1948 in Anna.  She died Aug. 16, 2002.
Schlichting was a mental health technician at Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center from 1957 to 1983.  He also farmed more than 50 years.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and life member of Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455.
A veteran of the U. S. Navy, he served on the USS The Sullivans during World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Gail Rion of Lick Creek, IL; a sister, Nelda Petrie of Fort Collins, Colo.; two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and until time of service Friday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Paul Weber officiating.  Burial will be in Casper Cemetery near Anna with military honors conducted by VFW Post 3455.

Elizabeth J. Seals, 66, of Johnston City, IL died Monday, July 2, 2007 at the home of a daughter in Vienna, IL.
She was born Oct 10, 1940 in Cobden, IL, daughter of Franklin and Alma Cook Walker.  She and Alfred J. Seals were married in May 1958 in Cobden.  He preceded her in death.
Seals was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Cairo, IL, and the Senior Circle Group in Marion, IL.  She was a cashier 25 years at Flagstop Truck Stop in Charleston, MO.
Survivors include four sons, Alfred Seals of Johnston City, Christopher Seals of Jacksonville, N.C., Michael Seals of Benton, IL, David Seals of Olive Branch, IL; two daughters, Annette Conroy of Vienna and Colleen Lottie of Springfield, MO.
Also surviving a brother, Raymond Walker of Carterville, IL; four sisters, Stella Farmer of Johnston City, Mary Daniels of Cairo, Victoria Walker of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Roberta Dellinger of Crainville, IL; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, IL.
The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Stevens officiating.  Private burial will be at a later date in St. John's Cemetery near Dongola, IL.

LUCILLE LORRAIN SELLARS




    Mrs. Lucille Lorrain Sellars, 72, of Fillmore, (IL) and formerly of Cobden, died at 4:25 p.m. Sunday (Feb 27, 1983) in Hillsboro (IL) Hospital.  She was born Dec. 23, 1910, in Union County, the daughter of William I. and Fannie G. Grammer Toler. 
    She married Louie Sellars Dec. 2, 1929, in Williamson County.
    She is survived by her husband, Louie, Fillmore; seven sons, John, Hillsboro; Carl, Cobden; Charles, Lemont; Harmon, Mesa, Ariz.; Richard, Wilmington; Lawrence, Pomona, Calif.; and David, Fillmore; four daughters, Karlyn Lou Crews, Hillsboro; Peggy Acklin, Morganfield, Ky.; Lora Greene, Henderson, Ky.; and Daisy Crowe, Florissant, Mo.; 30 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren;  two brothers, W. I. Toler, Cobden; and Alonzo Toler, Anna; one sister, Emma Henderson, Anna; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Donald, in 1936 and by one grandson, one great-granddaughter, and nine brothers and sisters. 
    She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church northeast of Cobden.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 1983, at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden with the Rev. James Holderfield officiating.  Interment was in the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Herrin.
    Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden was in charge of the arrangements.

JOE SHARP


COBDEN, IL–MR. JOE SHARP, age 78 of Cobden, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at his home in Cobden. He was born November 18, 1933 in Millcreek, the son of Rando and Della Brimm Sharp. He married Gloria Joann Moad on February 14, 1958 in Perks.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Gloria Joann Moad Sharp of Cobden; three sons, Terry L. Sharp of Granite City, Harold G. (Kim) Sharp of Cobden, Berry F. (Christine) Sharp of Dongola; six grandchildren, Crystal (Bryan) Pulliam of Carbondale, Andrew Sharp (Kristy Holder) of Carbondale, Melissa (Jason) Peach of Granite City, Amy Jo Sharp (Kevin Beegle) of Mounds, Kristen Apponey of Granite City; one adopted grandchild, Ashly Kaemmerer of Carbondale; six great grandchildren, Brittney, Nathan and Morgan Pulliam, Ryan and Savannah Peach, Haley Holder; one sister, Emma Lou Whittson of Oklahoma; one brother in law, Jesse Moad; four sisters in law, Paula Moad, Billie Hasty, Sally Dickerson and Betty Sharp; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harrel, Paul, and Jack Sharp; two sisters, Rose Thompson, and Izella Ransake.
 Joe worked as a farmer and steel mill worker for many years. He retired from the Florsheim Shoe Company in Anna.
Funeral services for Mr. Joe Sharp will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro with Rev. Ed Falgout officiating. A reading will be presented by Jeff Starr. Interment will be in the St. John’s Cemetery. Anna, IL.--Paul Sharp, 82, of rural Anna died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008 at his home.
He was born Jan. 7, 1925 in Elco, IL, son of Rando J. and Della N. Brimm Sharp.  He married Norma A. Jordan July 19, 1945 at Pocahontas.  She died Sept. 19, 1999.
Sharp served in the U. S. Army during World War II.  He attended New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Poole of Anna; a brother, Joe Sharp of Cobden, IL; a sister, Emma Whitson of Tulsa, OK; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his wife, a son, two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, IL.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday (Jan 6, 2008) at the funeral home with the Rev. Andy Gillespie officiating.  Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery at Dongola, IL.  Military rites will be conducted by Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455 in Anna.

VELMA LUCILLE SHARP



PEORIA, IL - VELMA LUCILLE SHARP, 83, of Peoria, Ill., died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.
She was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Reynoldsville, Ill., the daughter of Henry and Stella May Hawkins Johnson. She married Arthur Sharp. He died in December of 1993.
She was a member of Princeville Baptist Church.
She had been employed at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., for 15 years. She had lived in Cape Girardeau since 1949. For the last 10 years, she lived in Peoria.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Sharp of Peoria and Sharon Harrison of Melrose Park, Ill.; two brothers, June Johnson of Sturtevant, Wis., and Billy Taylor of Eddyville, Ky.; four grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Ford & Sons Sprigg Street Chapel in Cape Girardeau, Mo. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Lindsey Cemetery in McClure, Ill.

CHARLES C. SHEFFER


AURORA, IL-- CHARLES C. SHEFFER, 88, of Benton, Ky., formerly of Mounds, Ill., and Sandwich, Ill., passed away early Sunday morning, Sept. 28, 1997, at Murray-Calloway County Hospital in Murray, Ky.
He was born Sept. 3, 1909, at Dongola, Ill., the son of James Wilford and Cora Belle (Keller) Sheffer.
He was married on Aug. 13, 1938, to Lois (Clifford).
Charlie was employed at E.L. Bruce in Cairo for 22 years and at Caterpillar Inc. in Aurora, Ill., for 16 years until retirement in 1974.
Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Benton, Ky.; one son Lannie (Joan) Sheffer of Yorkville, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Ina Clifford of Aurora, Ill.; five grandchildren, Pam (Terry) Olson, Dee (Phil) Lane, Scott (Tracie) Sheffer, all of Sandwich, Ill., Terry Sheffer of Aurora, Ill., and Brian (Gabrielle) Sheffer of Oswego, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Jake and Erik Byro, Dan Stockham, and Andrea and Gina Sheffer of Sandwich; his sister Violet (Delbert) Lingle of Benton, Ky.; daughter-in-law June Linder of Dongola, Ill.; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by three sisters, Bertha Stoner, Cleeta Keller, and Madelyn Lingle; and two brothers, Clyde and Ray Sheffer.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola.
Interment will be in the American Legion Cemetery.

LEE ALLEN SHEFFER, SR.



MARSHALL, IL–LEE ALLEN SHEFFER, SR., 95, of Marshall, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Mar-Saline Manor in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2005, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall. William W. Harlow will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Burial with graveside military rites will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Born June 23, 1909, in Dongola, Ill., he was the son of the late Frank Sheffer and Sarah Poole Sheffer. In September 1931, he married Frances Elizabeth Ballew, who survives. He had lived in Marshall most of his life and was a grain elevator operator for 33 years. He was a member of Blue Lick Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving two Bronze Stars, and was a member of American Legion Post 191 in Marshall.
Additional survivors include one daughter, Juanita Riley and husband James of Marshall; two sons, James Sheffer and wife Judy of Marshall and Lee Allen Sheffer Jr. and wife Linda of Marshall; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Edward A. Sheffer and Robert L. Sheffer; three brothers and three sisters.

EDNA LORENE SHEFFER

Edna Lorene Sheffer, 83, died at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 30, 2006 in the City Care Center in Anna.
She was born Jan. 5, 1923 in Dongola, the daughter of Alphaeus C. and Clara (Webb) Wilson.  She was a member of Anna Heights Baptist Church.
She graduated from Shawnee College School of Nursing as a registered nurse.  She worked at Southeast (Missouri) Hospital in Cape Girardeau, St. Mary's Hospital in Cairo, City Care Center and in the Pink Home Health Care.  
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dixie Miller and husband, Jerry, of Anna and Marilyn Neislein and husband, Richard of Rockwood; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rodger Sheffer and wife, Margie, of Anna and Steven Sheffer and wife, Bobbie, of Rockwood; seven grandchilden, Scott Miller, Shawn Miller, Chris Lingle, Stephanie Schicker, Robbie Lannom, Tracy Rendleman and Stevie Joe Sheffer; 11 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Gladys Dale and Elsie Ward; four brothers, Everett, Earl, Lester, and Elmer Wilson; and one great-grandchild.
Services for Edna Lorene Sheffer will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006 in Crain Funeral Home in Anna with the Revs. Gene Hart and Verlee Eaker officiating.  Interment will be in American Legion Cemetery in Dongola.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2006 at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Anna Heights Baptist Church.

MRS. OLLIE SHEFFER



Mrs. Ollie Sheffer, age 96, of Spanish Lake, Mo., died Jan. 24, (1981) at 10:30 p.m. at Normandy Osteopathic Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.
She was born at Dongola, Ill. Nov. 8, 1884 to Eli and Rachel Keller Osman.
She married Thomas B. Sheffer, who preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1945.  Three brothers and three sisters are also deceased.
Surviving is a son, Thomas H. Sheffer of Spanish Lake, Mo; three grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren of St. Louis and several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Cypress Baptist Church.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan 28 at Whitnel Funeral Home, Vienna, with Rev. Dennis Lunsford officiating.  Burial was in Cypress Masonic Cemetery.

THOMAS BENTLEY SHEFFER



Thomas Bentley Sheffer was born Oct. 10, 1884, to W. W. Sheffer and Amanda Jane Allbright; departed this life Sept. 30, 1945, at the age of 60 years, 11 mos., and 24 days.
Mr. Sheffer had been ill for quiet (sic) a long time.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Ollie, to whom he was married Dec. 5, 1909; and the one son of this union, Thomas U. Sheffer; three grandchildren; two brothers; one sister; and a host of near relatives and friends.
Mr. Sheffer was saved at the (Mt.) Olive Baptist Church at the age of 18; duly baptized and continued the faith until a few days before his death, when he received much new light on the Scriptures and spent his last days very happy in his nearness to the Lord.
Mr. Sheffer was well known in his ability to sing and the numerous appearances with the various groups principally the Cypress Quartet.  (He sang) about the country, making use of this talent, which he much enjoyed.
His life will be much remembered by many and his passing leaves a sadness; but we have that great hope of meeting again.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at Cypress, Ill., with Rev. James McCain of Lutesville, Mo., officiating.  Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery south of Cypress.

Anna, IL.--Mildred L. Shepard, 84, of Anna died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007 at the City Care Center in Anna.
She was born May 19, 1923 in Union County, IL., daughter of Alfred and Myrtle Bloodworth.  She and Lynn Shepard were married Aug. 19, 1939 at Jackson, MO.  He died Feb. 21, 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Conrad Shepard of Jonesboro, IL, Jack Shepard of Ullin, IL; five daughters, Nancy Sadler of Trenton, IL, Judy Theis of Anna, Kathryn Charles of Whitesville, KY, Emily Wiseman and Wanda Ames, both of Dongola, IL; two brothers, James Bloodworth of Freemont, N. C., Harold Bloodworth of Farmington, MO; a sister, Rosie Smith of Anna; 22 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, three brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.  Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, (Sept. 1, 2007) at the funeral home.  Burial will be in McGinnis Cemetery.

ANNA, IL - Delores Imogene Shirkey, 73, died at 9:35 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at her home.
She was born Sept. 27, 1934, in Anna, the daughter of Herman and Katherine M. Irvin Miner.
She married Charles F. Shirkey on Oct. 6, 1979, in Denver, Colo.
Delores is survived by her husband, Charles F. James Sides

 James W. Sides, 63, of Alto Pass died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at his home.
He was born Jan. 21, 1938, in Alto Pass, son of George Paul and Mable Bryant Sides.
James owned and operated Sides Service Station many years. He was a member of the Congregational Church and Alto Pass Cemetery Board.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a brother, George Sides of Anna.
Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Alto Pass from 6-8 p.m. today.

ELSIE SIMMERMAN



    Elsie Simmerman, daughter of Monroe and Bernice Skelton Toler, was born on Jan 4, 1932, in Wolf Lake and died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at City Care Center in Anna at the age of 69.
    She married William Simmerman.  He preceded her in death.
    Mrs. Simmerman was a homemaker and was a member of the Jonesboro Pentecostal Church.
    She is survived by one sister, Sophronia McRaven of Jonesboro; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Funeral services will be Thursday, today, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Hileman & Parr Funeral Services with the Rev. Mike Blue officiating.      Friends may call from 9 until 10 a.m. Thursday, today, at the funeral home.  Interment will be in the Ebenezer Hall Cemetery near Lick Creek.

HOLLY HILL, FL -- EILEEN G. SINICATO, 75, of Shady Park Terrace, retired in 1965 from Abbott Laboratories in Illinois, died Oct. 2 at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.
Mrs. Sinicato was born in Balcom, Ill. She moved to this area in 1985 from Waukegan, Ill. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Ormond Beach. She enjoyed painting and writing.
Survivors include a son, Jack Reisberg, New Jersey; two daughters, Lora Doggett, Holly Hill, and Joyce Davis, North Aurora, Ill.; two brothers, Warren and Otho Young, both of Illinois; a sister, Juanita Moore, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

ELGIN, IL--Funeral services for DAVID R. SITTER, 90, of Elgin, will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral Home, 51 Center St., Elgin, IL.
The Rev. John Stensrud of Immanuel Baptist Church, Elgin, will officiate.
He was born June 2, 1912, in Anna, Illinois, to John Andrew & Julia (nee Watkins) Sitter.
David graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, Anna, IL., in 1931.
He died Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin, IL.
Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin.
Mr. Sitter had been employed as a machinist, retiring from Flexonics at Bartlett.  He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Elgin.
David is survived by his wife Wilma (nee Adams) to whom he had been married for 68 years; son Michael of Elgin, daughters, Donna Faber of Rockford, Evelyn Jackson of South Elgin, and Robyn and husband Jay Ferraro of Rockford, 14 grandchildren, 11great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m., Aug. 11, at the funeral chapel.

MARY B. SITTER, 99, died Wednesday at Miller's Merry Manor. Born in Anna, Ill., she retired as a nursing aide for the state of Illinois. Her husband, R. Guy, died in 1969.
Surviving are a daughter, Maralyn Cooper of LaGrange; a son, Robert G. of Tulsa, Okla.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Louise Skaggs, 80, of Cape Girardeau, MO, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 at Life Care Center of Cape Girardeau.
She was born Nov. 7, 1926 in Union County, IL., daughter of Riley and Esther Foster Knight.  She and Virgil Skaggs were married in 1948 in Piggott, AR.  He died Aug. 20, 1991.
Skaggs was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Kunefke of Cape Girardeau; a son, Steven Huffman of Guntersville, AL; a brother, Ellison Knight of Jonesboro, IL; a sister, Ruth Duke of Texas; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 10, 1996 in Huffman Harker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tommy Monroe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation was 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan 9, 1996 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She was a member of the Jesus Only Church.
She was born Sept. 10, 1906, in Cobden to Jerome and Alpha Omega (Cavaness) Glasco.
She married Frank F. Smith on April 16, 1932, in Carbondale. He survives. She was previously married to Archie Kelley, Sr. and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons, Archie Kelley and Carl and Jerry Smith, all of Carbondale; two daughters, Virginia Beasley of Collinsville and Lucille Lipe of Carbondale; one sister, Lucy Widdows of Carbondale; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-granchildren.
Her parents, one brother, and three sisters preceded her in death.

Mrs. Florence Smith

Mrs. Florence Smith, age 84, died at her home, 323 West Vienna St. in Anna at 11:15am Thursday. She had been a resident of Mound City until about five months ago when she moved to Anna to make her home with her son, Frank A Smith. She was born in Lovelaceville, KY. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church in Mound City.
Besides her son, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rosie Helton of Mounds and Mrs. Ruby Sullivan of Puxico, MO. 18 grandchildren and 8 great - grandchildren.

She was born November 9, 1923, daughter of  James and Irene Dixon Wright.  She and Clyde E. Smith were married November 22, 1941 at Benton, MO.  He died May 26, 2001.
Smith was a member of Immanual Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Smith of Carterville, IL, Duane Smith of Jonesboro, IL; two daughters, Susan Forby and Deanna Smith of Cobden; two sisters, Beulah Pribble of Herrin, IL, Muriel Snyder of Cahokia, IL; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, four sisters and four brothers.

Anna, IL--Inez Smith, age 89, of Anna died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 1994 at the Union County Hospital in Anna.
She was born February 28, 1904 in Union County, the daughter of Homer and Sarah Harlan Johnson.  She was united in marriage to Hollie Smith.  He preceded her in death on March 23, 1961.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anna.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Dorothy Hubbs and Reba Mull, both of Anna; Helen Perrsons of Carterville and Howard Rice of Marion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Maude Clutts, Ollie Rice, and Elva Truelove; and three brothers, Hollie Johnson, Ray Johnson and Earl Johnson.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 11, (1994) at 1 p.m. at the Crain Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Larry Shacklee officiating.  Interment was in the Ebenezer Hall Cemetery.

 James E. Smith, 58, of Jonesboro died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born Nov. 12, 1942, in Chicago, he was the son of Charles R. and Sylvia E. Bickel Smith.
On Aug. 3, 1963, he married Judith A. (Sandin).
James was a pipefitter and a member of the Pipefitters Union Local 597 in Chicago.
Survivors include his wife of Jonesboro; one daughter, Noreen Griffin of Holly Springs Miss.; two sons, Matthew Smith of Melrose Park, Ill., Brian Smith of Creal Springs, Ill.; one brother, William Smith of River Grove, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and her parents.

Albert Lloyd Smithey

 Albert Lloyd Smithey, 59, of Mill Creek died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Union County Hospital.
He was born Aug. 25, 1942, in Granite City, Ill., son of Albert L. and Ada E. Wilson Smithey. He and Nora M. Smiddy were married Dec. 23, 1962, in Corinth, Miss.
Albert was a route salesman 30 years with Lewis Brothers Bakery in Anna, Ill. He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1962.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles Smithey of Anna, Anthony Smithey of Jonesboro, Ill.; a sister, Joann Adams of Elco, Ill.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Lucille Smithey

 Lucille Smithey, 82, of Anna died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at City Care Center.
She was born June 21, 1919, at Mill Creek, Ill., daughter of Clyde D. and Eulalah Dillow Mowery. She and Winfred Smithey were married Jan. 5, 1937, in Pulaski County. He died Dec. 18, 1959.
She lived in Alton, Ill., for several years. She had worked at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. in Alton, Park's Drug Store and Capel's Pharmacy in Anna. She later moved back to Mill Creek where she lived until moving to Anna in 1999.
She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church in Mill Creek.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert Mowery of Columbus, Ohio, Perry Mowery of Union County, Ill.; and a sister, Jean DeFrates of Springfield, Ill.

 Nora Mae Smithey, 61, of Millcreek died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at her home.
She was born Oct. 6, 1944, in Anna, Ill., daughter of Oliver and Agnes Arnold Smiddy. She and Albert Lloyd Smithey were married Dec. 23, 1962, in Corinth, Miss. He died July 26, 2002.
Nora attended First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Ill.

MARY G. SMUCK



WASHINGTON, DC–MARY G. SMUCK, 87, who had taught private piano lessons at her home, died of cancer April 4 at home in Deale. Mrs. Smuck was born in Jonesboro, Ill., and attended Irving College in Pennsylvania.
In the late 1920s, she moved to the Washington area and attended Washington College of Music.
She was a member of the National Symphony Orchestra Society, Luther Place Memorial Church in Washington and St. James Episcopal Church in Lothian.
Her husband, Carl C. Smuck, died in 1989.
Survivors include two children, John C. Smuck of Arlington and Peggy Bruton Edwards of Olympia, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A daughter, Carla Sonntag, died in 1978.

FORREST E. SNEAD



ANNA, IL - FORREST E. SNEAD, 81, of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Evansville, Ind., and Anna, passed away at 11:41 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2009, in Tybee Island in Georgia.
Mr. Snead was born Oct. 12, 1927, the son of Earl and Lela (Richardson) Snead.
He married Margetta C. Fox in the garden of his in-laws, Sam and Glenna Fox of Anna, on Mother's Day in 1948.
Forrest grew up in Anna. His earliest memories were shoveling out the stables on the dairy farm at Anna State Hospital. After his mother, Lela Snead, signed the permission forms, he joined the Navy at 17 and saw the end of World War II. He was a radio operator on the USS Columbia.
Forrest returned to Anna and attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and was then married to Margetta. He then took his new wife to Evansville, Ind., where he met his business partner, Ed Beck. He and Ed worked in the then-new area of computers at Arkla before both went to Mead Johnson Pharmaceuticals. Forrest started the first computer department at Mead Johnson when computers were the size of large rooms, working long days and nights learning key-punch to tell the computers exactly how to operate.
He was an avid golfer and gardener and loved to travel. On weekends he would return to Anna to work on his parents' farm; stretching fence, raising beef cattle and taking care of his parents. He was a good son, husband and father. He retired in 2000 to Savannah, Ga., and lived on Wilmington Island.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margetta Snead of Savannah, Ga.; his daughter, Colleen Johnson of Evansville, Ind.; his sons, Randall F. Snead and R. Michael Lyons of Savannah, Ga.; his grandson, Grant E. Johnson of Evansville, Ind.; four great-grandchildren; and his brother, Vernon O. Snead and wife of St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2009, in Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Bill Minor officiating. Interment will be in the family cemetery at Ebenezer Hall Cemetery in Lick Creek, on a beautiful hilltop overlooking the hills and valleys of Southern Illinois. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of the VFW in Anna. Friends may call after noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Forrest wore a suit for 40 years and did not enjoy it, so casual spring dress is in order.

She was a graduate of the Illinois Training School for Nurses and the University of Michigan, where she received her doctorate.
She was a retired district supervising nurse with the Illinois Department of Health and worked as senior school nurse and health educator for Ann Arbor, Mich., public schools.
She also coordinated community health and nursing for the Department of Public Instruction in Lansing, Mich.
She was a member of the Alumnae Association at the Illinois Training School of Nurses, the Michigan School Health Association, the Michigan State Nurses Association, the National Organization of Public Health Nurses, the American Public Health Association, the American School Health Association, Delta Omega, Pi Lambda Theta and Phi Kappa Phi.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at American Legion Cemetery near Dongola. Military rites will be accorded by Carroll P. Foster of Anna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3455, Anna. Crain Funeral Home, Dongola, is in charge of arrangements.

HERMAN W. SOWERS


ANNA, IL–MR. HERMAN W. SOWERS, age 81, of Anna, formerly of Olive Branch, died at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born August 5, 1930 in Mill Creek, the son of Truman and Mary M. Cruse Sowers. He married Jessie Stonecipher on April 6, 1953 in Tamms.
Herman is survived by his wife, Jessie Sowers of Anna; two sons, Bill Sowers of Anna, Stephen Sowers of Vienna; three grandchildren, Jacob, Preston, and Jeremy Sowers; one sister, June McIntosh of Morton, Illinois; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Herman owned and operated Ko-Ko Jo’s in Olive Branch for many years. He loved to fish and hunt in his spare time.
Herman proudly served his country in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. He was the past Post Commander of the American Legion in Villa Ridge.  Herman is a member of the American Legion Post # 406 in Cairo. He was also a member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association and a member of the Anna-Jonesboro Elk’s Lodge # 1641.
Funeral services for Mr. Herman W. Sowers will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Bobby Richardson officiating. MARY M. SOWERS



Anna, IL--Mary M. Sowers, 92, of Anna died Thursday, July 3, 2003 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.
She was born July 8, 1910 in Elco, Ill., daughter of Peter A. and Sarah Poole Cruse.  She and Truman Sowers were married March 3, 1920 and he died June 21, 1965.
She was a cook at a nursing home and a member of the Beech Grove Methodist Church in Ullin, Ill.
Survivors include one son, Herman Sowers of Olive Branch, IL, one daughter June and Owen McIntosh of Morton, IL; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Anna and on Monday until service time.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Goins officiating.  Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery near Dongola, IL.

Anna, IL.--Everett Speck, 95, of Anna died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007 at his home.
He was born Aug. 21, 1912 in Anna, son of Henry Crawford and Ethel Norma Kirby Speck.  He and Offa Jane Benefield were married Dec. 24, 1933, in Anna.  She died Jan 5, 1997.
Speck was a truck driver 46 years with Florsheim Shoe Co.
Survivors include two sisters, Martha Elliott of Minnesota, Mary Strandt of California; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 11:30 a. m. to service time today at Gospel Kingdom Penecostal Church in Jonesboro, Ill.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today (Jan. 2, 2008) at the church.  Burial will be in Anna Cemetery.

SARASOTA, FL--JULIA SUSAN SPIRES, 85, of Sarasota died Sunday at Campbell House Nursing Center in Sarasota. A native of Anna, Ill., she moved to this area 10 years ago from Illinois. She was a retired public school teacher and United Methodist.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Carter of Mobile, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Betty Rendelman of Zephyrhills; three stepsons, Don of Chicago, Bill Plemon of Lakeland and Thomas Plemon; a brother, Eugene Robinson of Sarasota; a sister, Ethel Halterman of Decatur, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

VIRGIE M. SPURLOCK



Jonesboro, Ill.--Virgie M. Spurlock, 88, of Jonesboro died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
She was born June 28, 1919 in Hawesville, Ky., daughter of William and Dora Sanders Nix.  She and Ervin M. Spurlock were married Dec. 23, 1939 in Jackson, Mo.  He died Nov 19, 1988.
Spurlock was a member of the United Methodist Church in Anna, Ill., and a volunteer with Homeless Inc.
Survivors include two daughters, Pat Stockton of Dongola, Ill., Ramona Clark of Jonesboro; two sons, Roger Spurlock of Cobden, Ill., Dana Spurlock of Oak Ridge; two sisters, Pauline Adkins and Helen Peck of Hawesville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters, and four grandsons.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill Minor officiating.  Burial will be in Casper Cemetery.

Ray D. Sronce

 Ray D. Sronce, 54, of Cobden died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Union County Hospital in Anna, Ill.
He was born March 13, 1947, in Anna, son of Paul and Helen Juanita Young Sronce. He and Darlene Dallas were married Oct. 20, 1970, in Jonesboro, Ill.
Ray was retired from Greyhound Bus Lines. He was a member of Cobden American Legion Post 259.
He served two tours in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Darrick Sronce of Paris, Ill., Shawn Sronce of Cobden; two daughters, Valery Sronce of Metropolis, Ill., Tiffany Sronce of Cobden; two sisters, Bonnie Payne of Dayton, Ind., Ruth Boren of Springfield, Ill.; a brother, Donnie Sronce of Cobden; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers and sisters.
Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden after 6 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Janet Lindsey officiating. Burial will be in Alto Pass Cemetery, with military honors by Cobden American Legion Post 259 and Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455 of Anna.

ANNA -- JOHN L. “JACK” STARR, 68, died at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, in Union County Hospital in Anna.
He was born April 19, 1942, in Galesburg, the son of Marion S. and Eva (Boen) Starr.
John was a member of Laborers Local 773 and Elco Baptist Church.
He first married Janet Sue Carter, and later married Kathryn Wright Chapman. Kathryn preceded him in death Feb. 22, 2010.
Survivors include his former wife, Janet Sue Starr of Jonesboro; five sons, Kevin (Michele) Starr, Jeff (Linda) Starr, Ron Chapman and Clifford Treece, all of Anna, and Richard Chapman of New Port Richey, Fla.; one daughter, Dorinda Treece of Anna; 15 grandchildren, Kevin L. Starr Jr., Brandon Starr, Ashley Starr, Jacob Starr, Haley Pulliam, Letisha Pugh, Leneisha Pugh, Makaila Smith, Tara Tite, Josh Tite, Darren Tite, Amber Chapman, Ronnie Chapman, Joey Chapman and Nikki Treece; 17 great-grandchildren, Serenity McHughes, Nicholas Chapman, Jacob Chapman, Skylie Fisher, Joeseph Chapman Jr., Jordan Chapman, Brooke Starr, Bryce Moore, Angel Starr Fox, Blake Cast, Brennan Pullium, Isabella Alverez, PePe Alverez, Eli Huff, Kaleb Bauer, Kylie Dailey and Kaitlyn Starr; a brother, Raymond Starr of Houston; and a sister, Terrie (Gus) Autry of Springfield.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald Starr, Billy Dean Starr and Jimmy Lee Starr.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with the Rev. Billy Carter officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mary Stokes

 Mary Stokes, 89, of Anna died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at City Care Center.
She was born March 12, 1912, daughter of Joe and Mary Smith. She married Raymond Stokes, who died May 16, 1973.
Survivors include two sons, Elmer Stokes of Anna, Raymond Stokes of Dongola, Ill.; a daughter, Juanita Stokes; and a brother, Claudia Smith of Winston, Mass.
She was preceded in death by a sister.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crain Funeral Home in Anna. The Rev. Norman Sloan will officiate. Burial will be in Anna Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service.

WILLIAM F. STONE



CRYSTAL RIVER, FL–WILLIAM F. STONE, 69, of Crystal River, died Saturday (July 11, 1998) at Seven Rivers Community Hospital. Born in Dongola, Ill., he came here one year ago from Trenton, Ill., and was a retired construction worker.
He was retired after 21 years of service from the U. S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist and a life member of the American Legion and VFW, both of Trenton, and Local 946, O'Fallon, Ill.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy C.; a brother, George, Missouri; and a sister, Mary Terry, Granite City, Ill.

Billy G. Stout

 Billy G. Stout, 73, of Lick Creek died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1929, in Johnson County, son of Lois O. and Elsie Marie Baker Stout. He and Maye Haire were married Feb. 28, 1948, in Osceola, Ark.
He was a carpenter 37 years with E. T. Simonds Construction Co. He was an elder at First Christian Church in Anna, Ill., and chairman of the Mission Committee many years.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Larry Stout of Beaver Dam, Wis., Bill Jr. and Richard Stout of Anna, John Stout of Lick Creek; a daughter, Susan Crawford of Lick Creek; a brother, Jimmy Stout of Decatur, Ill.; two sisters, Lorene Lingle of Lick Creek, Virginia Page of Carbondale, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

ANNA - Jack Stuber, 69, of Elmwood, Tenn., formerly of Anna, died at 9:17 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, in University Medical Center in Lebanon, Tenn.
He was born March 9, 1939, in Cobden. He married Ruth Ann Tucker on June 14, 1962. She survives.
He was a member of the Chestnut Mound United Methodist Church.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a lifetime member of the AmVets Post 60 in Arcadia, Fla.
He retired from John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann of Elmwood; two sons, John David (Robin) Stuber of Winchester, Ky., and Jeffrey (Tammy) Stuber of Salem, Ore.; one daughter, Jacqueline (Greg) Thomas of Elmwood; 14 grandchildren, Joshua, Samara, Michael Allen, Laura, Ashley, Katie, Kaylee, Billy, David, Danielle, Christopher, Logan, Michael and Allison; one great-grandchild, Jasmine; two sisters, Phyllis (Larry) Vaughn of Anna and Bonnie (Manny) Hernandez of Belleville; one brother, John T. (Kristy) Stuber of De Soto, Mo.; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Laura Ragsdale and a sister, Linda Kay Rosson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, in Crain Funeral Home, Anna with John Shelton officiating. Greg Thomas will deliver the eulogy. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Casper Cemetery.

CLEARWATER, FL--IZOLA SUMMERS, 79, of Clearwater died Wednesday at Drew Village Nursing Center. A native of Anna, Ill., she moved to the area in 1964 from Carbondale, Ill.
She was a bookkeeper and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Largo.
She is survived by her husband, Leo; a son, Bobby Gene of Chicago; two daughters, Patricia Sovonick of Largo, and Virda Zekas of Panama City; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

DELPHIA J. SYKES



WALNUT CREEK, CA–DELPHIA J. SYKES, a registered nurse with Ygnacio Valley Convalescent Hospital for 20 years, died Monday (Oct 16, 1995) at Mt. Diablo Medical Center in Concord. She was 88.
The native of Jonesboro, Ill. (born there April 13, 1907), lived in San Diego before moving to Concord 34 years ago. She was a member of St. Agnes Church in Concord.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Milton Sykes of Concord; daughter, Patricia Newman of Washington; son, Michael Sykes of Hercules; brother, Louis McKeever of Illinois; and four grandchildren.
Services: Vigil service at 7 p.m. today at Ouimet Bros. Concord Funeral Chapel. Graveside service at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego.
