Meridian Cemetery, Berwick Twp., Warren Co, IL

The above photos were taken by Foxie accompanied by her daughter Kate on one cold Sunday afternoon in February of 2005.  We took many photos of the tombstones that day and I will be placing more of them here on another page with links from this webpage.  So, check back and if there should be one you are wanting feel free to email me (click on email link below) and if don't have will go and get it.

The first one is a photo of the sign you can see from the road.  Upon entering the cemetery you will first see a huge rock with the plaque on it in the above photo.  It reads~~"Site First Meridian Church Christian Church, Given by Henry Meadows, Built by pioneers."

The Meridian Cemetery is located in the northwest quarter of Section 3 in Berwick Twp. about two and a half miles east of Berwick, IL. The cemetery is at the site of the old Meridian Christian Church, which was one of the early church organizations in Warren County, IL.  It is on land deeded to the church by a Meadows family member in 1868 and then to the Meridian Cemetery Association in 1919.

The church disorganized many years ago and the church has an attached plaque engraved with a cross and an inscription reading "Site First Meridian Christian Church- Given by Henry Meadows- built by Pioneers 1829".

The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and has been well maintained although burials are now infrequent.  In August 1982, the Meridian Cemetery inscriptions were identified as:

Note from Foxie:  This cemetery page was typed, designed, and proofread by Gloria Jackson.  I believe she did a an excellent job and had little corrections or none to make on it.  Thanks a bunch Gloria....

Note from Foxie:  Directions to this cemetery are I've been here many times and I think the name of the cemetery should of been Meadows as that is mostly who are buried in this cemetery.  From Berwick, IL, you take the black top going east out of Berwick.  You just stay on this blacktop road and you will see the cemetery on your left hand side of the road a few miles out.  This same blacktop will take you into Abingdon, IL, at the corner of highway 41, turn left to go to Galesburg, IL.
