JOHANN FREDERICK WILLIAM HOFFMANN II
(Sixth child of Johann F. W. Hoffman)

(great great grandfather of dsw)

2. Johann Frederick William Hoffman - b. Aug. 6, 1816; d. About Nov., 1853;
m. Aug. 1, 1839, Caroline Bocker (Böker) - b. May 1, 1819; d. March 4 1896.
7 children - possibly 10 - 5 lived to grow up --
      Marie Elisabeth;       Marie Caroline;       Chris-tine Caroline;       George Joseph;
      George Wilhelm Joseph;       Christina Louise Sophia;       Chris-tian Frederick.

      A German Catechism which was published in 1819 and has the name Friederich Hoffmann printed on the fly leaf and is now owned by Adele Ahlers of Kirkwood, Mo., contains informa-tion pertaining to the Hoffman family. Among the names of other children of Frederick and Caroline we find: Sun. eve 11 P.M., Feb. 29, 1848 daughter Christina Wilhelmina died - col-laramorbus - lived 15 mos. A little farther down: Born Jan. 1, 1852 1 A.M. son Christian Friederich Wilhelm Baptized on Sun. May 9,1852 in St. Louis. Another notation - Fred William 10 mos. and a few days old died. Another - Born aft. Feb. 21, 1853 Christian Earl Ludwig. Since the German writing is not too clear on some of this we cannot be sure but believe these also were the Frederick Hofftnans Children.

Johann (BR leaves out the Johann dsw .) Frederick William Hoffman, 6th child of Johann Friederich Wilhelm Hoffman and Anne Marie Hoffman (nee Engel), was born at Rothenuffeln, Germany, on Aug. 6, 1816 and died in Washington Co., Illinois., about 1853. Since he is bur-ied in an unmarked grave in a family burial ground on what was at that time, his farm, and we can find no record of his death, by deduction, in relation to other events, we believe his death to have occurred in Nov. of 1853. At any rate, probate court records show his brother John was appointed administrator of his estate on Dec. 1, 1853. We are not sure when he came to America, but the record of his marriage to Caroline Bocker on Aug. 1, 1839, in Fairfax Co., Ohio (Lancaster) has been found.

{BR has stated that he be-came a naturalized citizen in Ohio which would have required 3 years. In the memoirs of Eliza-beth Hoffmann, his daughter, she states that his father returned to Germany to gather the rest of the family and Caroline who apparently was his espoused. By then Caroline was an orphan and he had to sneak her out of an upper window with the aid of her aunt since her uncle refused her permission to leave. JFWH II 's brother Christian remained with him in Ohio. Since the second emigration apparently arrived at Philadelphia on or just before Christmas, 1838 the naturaliza-tion would have required his arriving no later than 1836 . dsw}
Caroline's full name as it ap-pears on St. John's Lutheran Church Records, New Minden, Illinois., is Friedericke Wilhelmine Caroline Hoffman. Her place and date of birth is listed as Krohenlo (actually Kroppeloh , dsw), by Preusz Minden, Germany, May 1, 1819.
(This means that she was espoused when 13.dsw)
She was married three times. Her second husband, whom she married on Dec. 30, 1856, was Friederich Christian Hesemann, who died on Oct. 31, 1858, at the age of 38 years and 5 months. New Minden Church records note that he was not a member of that congregation and not buried on their cemetery. Two children, a boy and a girl - twins - were born of this union. The girl's name was Martha and she married a man named Myer. The boy's name was Henry and I have not been able to learn anything about him except that he married and moved on a farm near Lockwood, Mo.

Caroline's third marriage was to Wilhelm (Bismarck) Vogt on May 15, 1860. He died Apr. 15, 1904, and is buried in the New Minden Cemetery. Caroline died March 4, 1896, at the age of 76, after an illness of 6 days. She also is buried in the New Minden Cemetery. The History of Washington Co. 1879 notes that the original settlers of Covington Precinct were not German, but that they and their heirs sold their farms to German immigrants from the area of Preusz Minden. This same book, on page 76, says the first German settler in the Covington Precinct was F. W. Hoffman, who came in 1840. Frederick apparently purchased his farm directly from the federal government for $1.25 an acre. We found this record among land grants in our Washington Co. Historical Museum. The date of purchase was Dec. 30, 1839.
(This means that JFWH I had gone on ahead of the rest of the family since they arrived after March 23, 1840. dsw)
Frederick's farm was south of New Minden, presently owned by Walter Nieman. Their first home was a log cabin, which about 1882 was replaced by a new home and the log cabin moved to become a barn.

MARY ELIZABETH HOFFMAN
(First child of Frederick Hoffman)

3. Mary Elizabeth Hoffman - b. May 17,1840; d. July 17,1942 - age 102.
M. Oct. 11, 1858, Christopher Heinrich Wulfmann {of Plum Hill, IL. He was born at Wimmer, Pfarrbezirk Lintorf September 22, 1835- d. 1919. The son of Johann Friedrich Wulf(mann) and Marie Eleanor Ankesheil. The family changed the name to Wulfmann after arriving at Plum Hill (1848) but before the 1850 Census. The Hoffmans and Wulfs came from the Wiehengebirge and had lived about 40 miles apart. Wimmer and Lintorf lie in Lower Saxony whereas Rothenuffeln is i n North-Rhine Westfalia. The area was known as Osnabrukerland for many years. {It lies between Minden and Osnabruck . dsw}
14 children - Anna; Meta; Martha; Selma; Laura Lawhead ,
Samuel; Daniel & Jacob (twins); Armin;
5 more who died at an early age and whose names are unavailable.

Little is known about this family, however, an obituary provided by a member of the family does reveal some things.

Rev. Wulfmann was an Evangelical Minister, who had charges in Ohio, Carlyle and Breese, Il-linois., Huntingburg and Newburgh, Indiana. Elizabeth, according to her obituary, led an unusually active life, sharing in the "work, joys and sorrows as a faithful pastor's wife" until her husband's retirement in 1902. After her husband's death in 1919, her declining years were spent in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her daughter, Selma, until three months before her death, when Mother and daughter moved to Newburg, Indiana.

A niece, Mrs. Alma Walker, remembers her cousins Jake, Sam( actually Ben, dsw) and Dan, who visited in their home in St. Louis while they were attending Pharmacy School and Eden Seminary there. Elizabeth's obituary says funeral services were held in Newburgh, Ind., July 10, 1942, with burial in Fairmount Cemetery, Huntingburg, Indiana. It also mentions that there were 33 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren .
(and 11 of her children with their spouses; dsw) [dsw no supporting evidence regarding miscarriages in the Bible of Christoph Heinrich Wulfmann (in my possession)] (information added by dsw) (I have essentially rewritten this section dealing with the Wulfmann families, dsw)

Tracing the 14 children was not all that difficult and much additional information was be found in the archives of Eden Seminary since of the 14, four daughters were pastor's wives and two sons were ministers in the Evangelical Church. (dsw)

4. John was born at Plum Hill on 18 December 1859 and died in 1860. The church records list him as Johann Friedrich Wulfmann. He is buried behind St. John's UCC, Plum Hill.

4. Mary Elisabeth Wulfmann was born at Plum Hill, 23 March 1861 and died 5 February 1927. She was the wife of Pastor Johann Thal, Champaign Illinois.

4. Anna Maria Sophia Wulfmann was the wife of Pastor Heinrich Juergens, Cleveland Ohio, born at Plum Hill, born 12 July 1864 and died 3 April 1951.

4. Samuel Henry Wulfmann Sam was born 29 December 1866 while Cristoph Heinrich Wulfmann was pastor at Mansfield Ohio (1866-68). He died in 1949 Vincennes Indiana., They had a son Otto Carl Wulfmann, and two daughters, Cornelia Wulfmann Pope and Jeannette Wulfmann Frick. Joe Carl Wulfman (Grand Junction Colorado) is Otto's son and brother of Betty Wulfman Burdick of Columbia Missouri. Joe said that Sam had graduated from Elmhurst College but decided not to enter the ministry. He started a coal mining busi-ness at Hartwell Indiana. The depression of 1909 wiped him out and he never did much af-ter that except live with his son Otto. Joe says he can recall his funeral as being when he was a teenager. He therefore suspects the date of death in my notes is incorrect. Sam mar-ried Lydia Klein Wulfmann.

4. Meta Christina Wulfmann was the wife of Pastor August Juergens. How they met and courted is probably an interesting story since the paths of the Cristoph Heinrich Wulfmann family and A. A. Juergens do not seem to cross as regarding pastoral assignments. She was born at Dutch Run, Ohio, 9 August 1868 and died 2 March 1957, place and exact date un-known to me. They had two children, Elsie and Walter. I have a picture of Jacob and a Juergens lounging on a step which is probably August seeing the ages are nearer than that of Heinrich J. At the time of the death of Cristoph Heinrich Wulfmann, her address was Cin-cinnati.

4. Gustave Adolph Wulfmann was born 30 March 1870 and died 14 June 1936. I believe it was in Texas. Was in the oil business at Amarillo and was always known as 'Boysie

4. Benjamin Wulfmann was born at Calhoun County Illinois on 16 October 1871 and died 5 November 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio where the funeral service was held at Zions Kirche (Evangelical Synod) and he is buried in Lawrenceburg Indiana (US 50, Ohio line, Ohio River). Obituary in Der Friedensbote. He was a pastor in the Evangelical Church and President of the Ohio Synod at the time of his death.

4. Emil H. Wulfmann was born at Carlyle Illinois on 9 January 1874 and died 11 June 1890 from typhoid fever. He is buried alongside of his parents in Fairmont Cemetery, Huntingburgh Indiana. Graves 1,2,3 of Lot #1, Block 234

4. Daniel Wulfmann and Jacob Wulfmann were born on 17 November 1875 at Carlyle Illinois. Daniel died in July 1951, place and exact date unknown to me. According to note above Dan attended pharmacy college in St.. Louis. A niece Mrs. Alma Walker remem-bered Jake, Ben and Dan from the time they were in St.. Louis at Eden and the Pharmacy College. ( By default Dan becomes the pharmacist since Ben and Jake were at Eden). (Who Alma Walker is/was is a mystery to me) Jacob was a pastor for 50 years starting with a circuit riding assignment near Waco Texas in 1899 and ending at Zion Evangelical and Reform Church, Mt.. Clemens, Michigan. He died 22 June 1957 at Mt. Clemens. He had served as President of the Michi-gan Synod of the Evangelical & Reformed Church. His first wife, Dora Pister was the daughter of Rev. Dr. Jakob Pister, President of the German Evangelical Church in North America from 1901 until his death in 1914. Dora died of pernicious anemia around 1926 at Port Huron Michigan..

4. Martha Elisabeth Wulfmann was born on 25 February 1878 and died 29 May 1963 at Hamburg, New York... She was born at Carlyle Illinois. She was married to Pastor Albert Edward Viehe of Cincinnati. He was the son of Rev. Kaspar Viehe who had been pastor at Breese Illinois at the time of Albert's birth.

4. Selma Elenore Adelaide Wulfmann was born 18 June 1880 at Breese, Illinois and died in 1968 at Hamburg, New York. She never married.

4. Laura Marie Wulfmann was born 22 August 1883 at Breese, Illinois and was married to John Lawhead of Louisville, Kentucky. She died 21 June 1961

4. Armin Edward Wulfmann was born 2 September 1885 at Huntingburgh Indiana and died 4 September 1948.

Where there are discrepancies in the locations for births, I have relied upon the archives of the E&R Church which recorded the pastorates for all ministers with dates. These were kept current and did not rely upon later memories.

(Information on the following generations of Wulfmanns through year 2000 has been gath-ered in "Die Geshicte die Famile Wulfmann" by dsw. "the Hoffmanns" by Bernice Rheinhardt is Appendix 19 in Die Geschicte. All current phone listings for Wulfman in N. America are di-rect descendants of Christoph Heinrich Wulfmann (born Wulf) Including children they run to ~100 at last count. The Wulfmanns are related to a number of families in Washington County Illinois and their descendants. These include in addition to the individuals listed in this work, Schnitker, Brink, Anke(r)sheil, Bergman and we suspect Wulf. Oral history has it that the name change to Wulfmann was the result of there being another Wulf family nearby which had some of the same first names. With the exception of Selma who did not marry and Benjamin who had one, all had two or more children with some having a predominance of male offspring. E.g., Jacob's son had 2 sons who had between them 7 and no female children.

The family settled on a farm near Covington. where they lived until 1889, when
he purchased the store in New Minden. He owned and operated this store until
1903, when he sold it and retired from business.
He and his wife moved to Nashville, Illinois., in 1907.
He was in very poor health for 8 mos. before his death and was for a time a
patient in Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis, but died at his home in Nashville.
