John E. Hoffman & Catherine Hoffman

John E. Hoffman on June 24, 1839 married his second wife, Maria Justine Katherina (Cath-erine) Hoffman - b. June 15, 1818; d. Oct. 5, 1874. After the death of John E., Catherine mar-ried a Mr. Wagenhals. John and Catherine were the parents of 10 children Frederick William; Anna Maria; Elisabeth; Caroline; George (1) who died in infancy; Sarah; George (2); Martha, Hannah; Louis.

Frederick William Hoffman
(Third child of John E. Hoffman)

3. Frederick William Hoffman - b. June 3, 1840; d. Sept. 6, 1917. Fred was a store keeper in Nashville. m. Marie. There is a difference of opinion as to Marie's last name. A grand-daughter believes her name was Meier. She bases this on the fact that she had an uncle named Meier, who she always thought was her mother's brother. I have not been able to find a record of the marriage of Marie Meier to Frederick Hoffman and do find one of Maria Volkmann to F. W. Hoffman in St. Paul's Evangelical Church records Nashville, with dates corresponding to what we believe to be the approximate date of their marriage and other dates seeming to be cor-rect, I am inclined to believe the uncle could have been a brother-in-law or the mother could have been married twice. St. Paul's records show the marriage on Aug. 11, 1865 of F. W. Hoffman to Maria Volkmann. They also show the death of Maria Hoffman (née Volkmann) on Feb. 5, 1870. These records also provide the following in-

19

formation: Heinrich Friedrich - child of Fr. Wilhelm and Mary Hoffman - died Feb. 17, 1870 (Relatives confirm that there were 2 children born to 'this union one of whom died in infancy). We have the date of the birth of George as Jan. 10, 1867, together with the fact that he was 3 when his mother died and the date of F. W's. second marriage to Caroline Wiese on Apr. 23, 1871. All these dates seem to indicate to me that her maiden name was Volkmann. Frederick and Marie were the parents of two children - one died in infancy George lived to grow up.

      4. George Henry Hoffman - b. Jan. 10, 1867; d. Feb. 24, 1952. George's mother died when he was three and he was cared for by his Aunt Sarah until Fred remarried. Turnham Green, Chiswick, London, England, Denise Gorringe, who was born in Carshalton, Surrey, England. Bert is a very talented musician who, for 21 years was staff or-ganist for Columbia Broadcasting System in New York. During this time, he free lanced on other networks and recorded for top labels. He made his debut as an organist at the age of 10, when he began playing the pipe organ at St. John's Episcopal Church in Springfield. Later he played the organ at the old Electric Theatre in Springfield and the Newman and Main Street Theatres in Kansas City. He graduated from the University of Kansas, receiving an AB degree with a major in music. While he was a student there, he played over Station WREN in Lawrence. He also at one time during his career served as music director for Sta-tion KCMO and played over Station WOQ in Kansas City. Bert's army service extended from 1943-1945, during which time he was assigned to Special Services. Among other things, his job was to help record background music for training films. In 1963, Bert planned to retire and return to Missouri. The return to southern Missouri became a reality but not the retirement. He was offered a position as organist in residence and radio and television con-sultant at the School of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, Mo. He felt he would enjoy this type of work and has become deeply involved in it. The School of the Ozarks is a self help institu-tion which operates without seeking any financial aid from city, state or federal government. and has grown from a one room school to a fully accredited four year liberal arts college. In-stead of money, students provide labor for tuition, room and board. Bert recently was over-seer for the installation of a Wurlitzer organ, which had, in 1928 been installed in RKO-Kieth's Theatre, Flushing, NY, at a cost of $65,000. This was a gift to the college from RKO - Stanley Warner Theatres of NY City. Funds for shipping and installation were provided by Mrs. W. Alton Jones, a member of the board of trustees. The Dedicatory Program featured Bert Buhrman at the Mighty Wurlitzer, on Apr. 18, 1971. The program was designed to show all the possibilities of the organ. Bert played the musical score to the showing of a si-lent motion picture film "Teddy at the -Throttle", featuring Gloria Swanson and Wallace Berry and a series of the sing along slides popular in theatres in the 1920's. In 1968, Bert's folk opera, "The Bald Knobbers" was produced and received with acclaim throughout the Midwest. Bert played the entire organ score for the production.
