      This church is in the Diocese of Belleville of Southern Illinois and it dates from 1867. Very little is written about this church but the address and current contact information for the church can be found here:

      According to the book "This is Washington County Its First 150 Years 1818 - 1968," which can be accessed on this website, the first settlement in the Okawville Precinct was made in about 1825. However, the village was not laid out until 1856 by James Garvin and James Davis. Prior to this H. P. Morgan had laid out the village of Bridgeport, which was immediately across Plum Creek. St. Barbara Church was founded in 1867 and would have been in the Diocese of Alton, Illinois because the Diocese of Belleville, Illinois did not form until 1888. Perhaps the growing German population dictated the establishment of a new Catholic church in this area. In some cases Mass was not heard more than once or twice per year because there was no priest to serve the people. One priest might have to cover a radius of more than 50 miles and say Mass in people's homes. Perhaps it was one such priest who performed the pre-1867 Baptisms.

      Please be aware that the transcription was done in good faith from the digital images. However, due to small handwriting, faint copies and difficult cursive handwriting plus many records that were partially hidden in the spine of the book, researchers can expect errors and partial entries.
 
      The records are generally in sequence but some records are out of place. For example one image of burials is in with the Baptisms. There are also some duplicated images of pages of 1890s Baptisms with more information on one set than on the other. This apparently happened when a new book was started and information was copied from the old book and put into the new book with updated information. Spelling variations abound!
For these reasons the researcher is encouraged to view the original image for verification.
