John R. Garvin Dies in Kansas

John R. Garvin, a son of James Garvin, former owner of the Buckeye House here, passed away last week in Erie, Kan., aged 70 years. The following obituary is taken from an Erie paper.

John R. Garvin, pioneer of this city, died at his home here Wednesday morning. He had been in poor health for months and his death was daily expected but even then it seems hard to think that John R. Garvin is gone forever.

In the days of the civil war John Garvin was a good soldier, always to be depended upon and true to his flag and country. In the days since the civil war he has always been a good citizen and true to his many warm friends. He was always jolly and his wit and humor have aided many to look on the brighter side of life. The town has lost one of its best citizens and the country has lost one of its best soldiers of the days of '61.

John R. Garvin was born in Putnam county, Indiana, February 8, 1845, and died at his home in this city, Wednesday, July 21, 1915, at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 13 days. He enlisted in Company I, 80th Illinois Infantry, and served during the civil war. Following the war, in 1868, he was married to Lizzie Adams at Nashville, Illinois, and they resided there until 1883 when they moved to Erie. For many years Mr. Garvin was associated with C.D. Smith in the General Merchandise business, first in North Erie and later down town. A few years ago John Garvin was appointed as officer at the state house and with Mrs. Garvin moved to Topeka where they resided until February this year when they returned to their old home here. The deceased is survived by his wife and three children. Mrs. Will Scott of this city, Mrs. Laura Kenney of Denver, Colo., and Harry Garvin of Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the home at 2:00 o'clock and burial will be made in the local cemetery. Rev. T.A. Nichols has charge of the funeral and burial services.
