Receive Final Summons
Wm. Given Joins Silent Army

Wm. Given
William Given died Saturday morning at 1:30 o'clock at the Calloway Hotel in this city after a five weeks' illness at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 12 days. Deceased was born at Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 6, 1836, and [in] 1841 came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Given, to Illinois, settling in Lively Grove. At the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Given enlisted in Co. D, 48th Ill. Vol. (Capt. Redden's company), was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh and discharged. Later he re-enlisted in Co. I, 154th Ill. Vol., commanded by Capt. Elliott, serving throughout the war and received his final discharge in September, 1865. He returned to Nashville residing in the county ever since. In 1872 he was married to Miss Clayton, who eighteen years ago departed this life.

The only daughter, Katie, last year met a tragic death in St. Louis through the explosion of a gasoline stove. Mr. Given leaves to mourn his loss a brother, Robert Given of Weldon, who has been here and took care of his brother during his last illness, and a nephew, James A. Given of Centralia, Mo.

Deceased was a brave soldier, good citizen, kind-hearted and pleasant spoken. He was gifted with a remarkable memory and had a fund of entertaining and interesting information about the early settlers of this county.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the Presbyterian church, Rev. H.G. Dusenberry officiating. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. Nashville G.A.R. Post paid tribute to their departed comrade by attending in a body and had charge of the services at the grave.

The following comrades acted as pallbearers: Forman Evans, Martin Poole, N.F. Jones, W.H. Martin, Henry Krueger and Chas. Schlinger.
