George Martin, a well-known veteran of the Civil War, died Wednesday morning at 7:30 o'clock in the Bridget Hughes Hospital here of heart disease at the age of 73 years, 9 months, and 11 days. Deceased was born Sept. 5, 1841, six miles south of here on the old Martin farm in Pilot Knob township. During the Civil War, he enlisted here Aug. 13, 1862, in Company B, 111th Ill. Inf., Col. James Martin being commander of the regiment. He fought in the battles of Lookout Mountain, Resaca, etc. and took part in Sherman's famous March to the Sea. He was in the grand review at Washington, D.C., after the war and was mustered out June 6, 1865.

Sam Coulter and Robert Ardrey of Oakdale served in the same company with the departed veteran.

Mr. Martin was of a social nature and well posted on current events, a good citizen and member of the G.A.R. post. He was unmarried and is survived by one brother, W.G. Martin, south of here. For some time Mr. Martin had been suffering from a cancerous growth and other complications and had been of late a patient in the local hospital.

The funeral services were held this (Thursday) morning in the M.E. church here, Rev. S.H. Hoar officiating. The G.A.R. post attended in a body to pay tribute to their departed comrade.

Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery.
