Kermit Holtgrewe

     Kermit Holtgrewe, 72, of Belleville, Ill, born Sept. 25, 1931 in Stone Church, Ill. died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at John Cochran VA Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.

     Mr. Holgrewe was a retired commercial artist. He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill. He was also a past president of the Men's Club at the church, a member of the Legion of Mary, a choir member and a Eucharistic and lector. Mr Holtgrewe was a presenting member of Pre-Cara Conferences. he was involved the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, was a member of the BSA Council and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of Catholic War Veterans Butz Jobe Post 370.

     Mr. Holtgrewe was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He was a member of the American legion Belleville Post 58, a past Post 58 Commander, a past St. Clair-Monroe County commander, a past 22nd District commander and a past 5th Division commander and a past Illinois state commander (1994-1995). He was also a member of the American Legion and the Venedy Bands. He was chef de gare of 40/8 and the current president of the Korean War Veterans. He was instrumental in starting the Veterans Assistance Commission in St. Clair County, and was a volunteer for the Veterans Outpatient Clinic.

     Mr. Holtgrewe was preceeded in death by a son, James Holtgrewe; his parents, Edward and Dehle; nee Hoelscher; a brother, Richard Holgrewe; and a sister, Gladys Ostendorf.

     He is survived by his wife Shirley E, nee Sommers, Holtgrewe. whom he married October 2, 1954; two sons, steven (Julia) Holtgrewe of Waterloo, Ill., and Gregory (Veronica) Holtgrewe of Paducah, Ky.; two daughters, Mary (Mike) Pierce of Freeburg, Ill.; and and Catherine (Greg) Seaman of Belleville, Ill.; four brothers and two sisters, Roy Holtgrewe of Addieville, Ill., Edgar (Irene) Holtgrewe of Stone Church, Ill., Celeste Lammers of Washington, Mo., Laverne Schiremer of Fairview Heights, Ill., his twin brother, Kenneth (Lillian) Holtgrewe of Millstadt, Ill., and Victor (Natalie) Holtgrewe of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren, Rob Asseimeier, Amimee (Jason) Grace, Zachary Holtgrewe, Ara Holtgrewe, Adam, Jacob and John Holtgrewe, Joshua and Collin Pierce and Ethan, Aaron and Natillie Seaman; and a great-grandaughter, Emily Grace.

     Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, to St. Henry's Catholic Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.

     Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 5, 2004, at the George Renner & Sons funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., for a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Monsignor Bernard Voss officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
