Excerpt from Robert Guthrie's Pension File, 1886

County of Washington

      On this 27th day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty six,
personally appeared before me H.F. Reuter Clerk of the County Court, a Court of record
within and for the County and State aforesaid,

      Robert Guthrie, aged 49 years, a resident of Washington County State of Illinois,
who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Robert Guthrie
who was enrolled on the 10th day of August, 1861, in company "F", of the 10th Missouri
regiment of volunteer infantry, commanded by Andrew Todd, and was honorably
discharged at St Louis, Mo, on the 29th day of August, 1864; that his personal description
is as follows: Age, 49 Years; height 5 feet 9 inches; complexion dark; hair dark; eyes
brown;.

      That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line
of his duty at Herman in the State of Missouri, on or about the 1st day of December 1861,
he was taken with an epileptic fit the morning after arriving at Herman Mo and was
insensible for more than an hour; This was the first affiant was affected with anything of
the kind. And at a short period after he had another Epileptic fit, and then another, having
three fits in Harmon Mo. inside of a month. And that he afterward had several Epileptic
fits in the service. That he thinks the origin of said disease to have been exposure &
hardship guarding the Gasconade Bridge in Missouri in the latter part of November 1861.
That although having never had anything of the kind before Dec. 1861 at Harmon Mo. he
has ever since and is now subject to and afflicted with said epileptic fits.

That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the County of Washington and
State of Illinois - P.O. Nashville and his occupation has been that of a Brick layer. That
prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of good, sound physical
health, being when enrolled a Farmer.
