James H. Power
Taps was sounded Tuesday night and James H. Power of Pilot Knob, the well-known veteran, joined the Silent Army. Deceased was born Dec. 1, 1836, in St. Clair County near Darmstadt and in 1854 came to Washington county, where he has since resided except when fighting for his country during the Civil War. July 29, 1860, he was married to Miss Dorcas Etheldra Logan at Bethel by Rev. Isaac Hickman. Last year the aged pair celebrated their golden wedding and no one supposed that the happy union would so soon be severed by death. When secession threatened the nation and the boys rallied round the flag, Mr. Power enlisted in Co. B, 111th Ill. Inf., and served from July, '62, to the close of the war. He was captured and confined in the notorious Andersonville prison from Oct. 26, 1864, till April 25, 1865, George (Hooker) Martin served in the same company. In a number of skirmishes he fought bravely and took part in Sherman's campaign. While the husband was in the army the young wife remained with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson Logan. On his return the soldier laid aside the musket for the plowshare and raised crops on Maple Hill farm. A loving husband and father, a good citizen and helpful neighbor, Mr. Power's kindly words and deeds endeared him to all who knew him. He became ill last week Thursday with pneumonia and died Tuesday night at 10 o'clock at the age of 74 years, 11 months and 27 days. Of nine children, six survive and with their mother mourn the loss of a beloved husband and father. The children are: Arthur of Los Angeles, Calif., Charles and Philip of Medford, Oregon, Jewel C. of Fullerton, Calif., Mrs. Lulu Carson of Pilot Knob and Miss Flora Power at home. Definite arrangements for the funeral have been delayed because, on account of distance, the arrival of the sons is uncertain, but it will not take place before Monday. Rev. S.P. Groves will conduct the service at Locust Creek church, where the body will lie in state and the old soldier will be laid to rest in the adjacent cemetery to await reveille on Resurrection Day.
