He leaves three children to mourn his loss, Mrs. John Hargrave, Mrs. Sylveter Bernard [sic] and Mrs. Alney Hargrave. He had his father’s fleetness of foot, for in his younger days he was never beaten in a foot race and even a short time before his death he would think nothing of an eight or nine mile walk.

Uncle Joe, as he was familiarly called, was converted in 1839 and joined the United Brethren church, and in 1848 he united with the M.E. church in which faith he lived and died a consistent member. He was a stalwart Republican in politics, voting nothing but the straight ticket. Uncle Joe as a faithful friend, a kind father, a good neighbor and above all he was a faithful follower of the Master, humble, honest and kind. Good old man we miss you, but while we drop a tear to your memory, we know all is well.

FAMILY POISONED

“The family of David SPICER, consisting of the father, mother, a son and hired girl has been poisoned Sunday morning. Mr. Spicer resides a short distance west of Johnsonville, in Indian Prairie township. The particulars of the affair have been rather hard to obtain but the following are the facts so far as we know them. The coffee used by the family Sunday morning had been made the evening before and was left on a porch outside the house overnight. In the morning the servant girl noticed that the top of the coffee had the appearance of being covered with a white substance, but she supposed it was milk. After partaking of the meal the whole family was taken violently ill…a box of “Rough on Rats” is said to have been found near the porch where the coffee was left overnight, and this is believed to be the substance used. Victims all recovered. Poisoning was an intentional act…LATER- Mr. Spicer died from the effects of the poisoning, on Tuesday morning.”

William Smith

William Smith was born September 5th 1852 in Bellmont County, Ohio, near the town of Barnesville.  He was brought to Wayne County Illinois, by his parents, when an infant, settling on a farm in Arrington township, where he lived the remainder of his life.  He was married to Mary A. Marshall, November 3rd, 1872.  To this union were born eleven children.  Dora M:  James M:  Laura:  Martha:  Stella A:  Myrtle E (deceased);  Nora I:  Grace O:  Jacob O:  Harry (deceased):  Charles F:  Two brothers survive him, Malen who resided in Arrington Township, and James A. of Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

William Smith departed this life, Monday morning, October 15th 1900, just as the alluminary of the day began to appear, sending her rays of light to kiss away the night.  The angel of death with soft tread, crossed the threshold of the Smith home, and carried away the life of husband, father, brother and my dear friend.  He died within fifteen feet of where his father died, thirty years before, leaving him and his two brothers wife and stepmother, with a small home, to battle the world.

The deceased took the small legacy left him, and married a devoted wife.  Together through industry and economy, using his small portion as a nucleus, gathered a home for his wife and children in this life and a sufficiency for the wife to live on after he had gone.

After coolly and deliberately arranging his affairs, he then turned to the writer and his brother and asked them to sing, "Unclouded Day", and then pray with him.  This was a week prior to his demise.  He expressed to his brother and family the morning before he died, his willingness to go.  His suffering was of long duration, and severe:  yet he bore it all with manly fortitude, never complaining, always submissive.  In his death, his family has lost a devoted father, the community an energetic and trustworthy citizen.

Peace be to his ashes.   J.B.L.

CHARLES  WESLEY  SQUIRE

Charles Wesley, eldest son of Charles and Telia Squire, was born in Cisne, July 24, 1903. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth and has considered this his home at all times. His work has called him elsewhere at times and for some time he lived in Indiana, where he was engaged in the timber and milling business. He was united in marriage with Katie Austin, January 9, 1922. This union was blessed with two children, one daughter, Glenda Lee, and one son, Bobby Dean. For the past three years he has been continually under medical care. On Tuesday morning, September 20th, while working with a threshing crew on the farm of L.G. At the time of his death he was twenty-four years one month and twenty-six days of age. “Happy” as he was familiarly known by his friends, was of a congenial disposition and was thoroughly reliable and trustworthy in his work. His greatest delight was in the operation of machinery and his life ended at his post of duty. Well-Known Resident West of Fairfield Died Friday in
Olney Hospital.

Mrs. Laura Shaw, 67, widow of the late John Shaw, well-known resident west of Fairfield, died in the Olney sanitarium Friday morning from injuries suffered when she was struck by a car while crossing state highway fifteen in front of her home Christmas night. Mrs. Shaw had just alighted from a car on the south side of the highway and had walked around it and was crossing to her home on the north side of the road, when a car driven by William E. The body was returned here and funeral services were held at eleven o'clock Monday morning in the Bailey church, north of Wayne City, by Rev. Louis DeSelms. Burial was in the Bailey cemetery. At an inquest held in Olney Saturday, the jury held that death resulted from an unavoidable accident.
