J. W. BROUGHER, farmer, P. O. Opydke, was born October 17, 1827 in Jennings County, Indiana, son of Jacob Brougher a native of Pennsylvania, a farmer he died in Indiana and was well known as an industrious, well doing man. The mother of our subject, Isabella Foutz, was a native of South Carolina; she was a daughter of Louis and Sarah Foutz, natives of South Carolina, and was the mother of nine children; she died in Indiana. Our subject was educated in Jennings County, in the old fashioned pioneer subscription schools. He farmed all his life. In 1839 he moved to Jefferson County, and here owns 310 acres of land. He is no office-seeker and in politics he is identified with the Republican Party. His wife Nancy Hilton, born in Indiana, daughter of James Hilton, is mother of two children, now living, viz., Alvin L. born September 22, 1860; Jacob C., born July 28 1864. Mrs. Brougher is a member of the Methodist Church. He believes in no particular church, but believes it right to do to others as he would have them do to him.

PROMINENT WAYNE CITY RESIDENT DEAD

Sylvester L. Barnard Prominent Resident of Near Wayne City Answers Final Summons

Sylvester Loyd Barnard, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Barnard was born in Warick County, Indiana February 9th, 1856, died at his home near Wayne City, Illinois, November 27th, 1919 at 6 a.m., aged 63 years, 9 months and 18 days. On March 17th, 1876 the deceased was united in marriage with Esther M. Youngblood who preceded him May 4th, 1881. To this union were born three children, Mrs. C.W. Reid of Harvey, Ill.; Clarence of Johnsonville , Ill.; and Walter, deceased. On February 18, 1883 he was united in marriage with Catherine Spicer. To this union were born six children, Arthur,  (Thomason Cemetery) Mrs. William Barnard, Mrs. Lewis Dawson, Mrs. Geo. Wilson and Ordie S. all of Wayne City, Ill.  William A, preceded him July 4th, 1896 at the age of 19. He was converted and joined Pleasant Hill M.E. church of Indiana, upon coming to this state he transferred his membership to Wesley Chapel on the Johnsonville charge and later to Mt. Olive where he lived a faithful and active member till his death. He gave his strongest and best years to the service of his Savior and humanity and died in the triumphant hope of a glorious immortality. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, seven children, one foster child, Myra Wells, eight grandchildren, three brothers, two uncles, and other loved ones and a host of friends. He bore his long and intense suffering with patience until relieved by the Angel of Death. The funeral services were held at Mt. Olive church Saturday morning, November 19th, 1919, conducted by his former pastor, Rev. DeLain assisted by his present pastor, Rev. E.L. Lawler after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery nearby to await the resurrection of the Just.

Member of Popular Wayne County Family Dies

Mrs. Catherine L. Barnard, who lived about six miles north of Wayne City, died this morning. She was the widow of Sylvester Barnard. Mrs. Barnard was 70 years old. The family is one of the most highly respected in Wayne County. The funeral services and burial will be had tomorrow at Bailey church and cemetery in Wayne county.

LITTLE CHILD GONE LUCILLE FAYE BURTON

Lucille Faye, only child of Evan and Flo Weaver Burton, was born February 19, 1924; died December 2nd, 1925, at the age of one year, 9 months and 13 days. About two weeks ago little Faye was stricken with infantile paralysis. All that medical skill and loving care could do was done but to no avail.  She leaves to mourn her untimely departure her broken hearted parents, two grandmothers, two grandfathers, one aunt and eight uncles. Short funeral services were conducted by Elder W.D. Crippin at the home Thursday afternoon. Interment was in the Bailey Cemetery

As the sweet flower that scents the morn,
But withers in the rising day, Thus lovely was this infants dawn
Thus swiftly fled her life away.

Alice Ann Barnard

Alice Ann, youngest daughter of Richard and Mary Daisy was born in Wayne County, September 9, 1864.  She grew to womanhood and spent the greater part of her life in and near the community of her birth. At an early age she professed her faith in Christ and united with the General Baptist church at Bailey, where she has always been a faithful and devoted member.  For many years she has been afflicted with total blindness but she continued to keep her own home, being a neat and careful housewife in spite of her affliction, which she bore with great patience and was always kind and considerate of others especially of her husband, who like herself was totally blind. She was united in marriage with Weaver H. Barnard in June, 1890.  Eight children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy.  For several weeks she had been failing in health and the end came peacefully at her home in Sims, at noon, March 8, 1934, aged 69 years, five months and 26 days.  She is survived by her aged husband, two sons, Henry of Chenoa and Earl of Sims, three daughters, Irene Lamb and Gertrude Jones both of Sims and Fannie Reed of near Fairfield, twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and many dear friends who will mourn her death. Funeral services were conducted from the Bailey church Saturday morning by Rev. John Rush.  Interment was in the old Bailey cemetery.

Weaver H. Barnard

Weaver H., son of John and Elizabeth Barnard, was born in Ohio County, Kentucky, December 29 1851; died March 7, 1938; age 86 years, 2 months and 7 days. He came to Illinois in 1876, where he was married to Alice Ann Daisy in June 1890; eight children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. At an early age he professed his faith in Christ and united with the M.E. Church at Bailey, where he has always been a faithful and devoted member.  He was a kind and indulgent parent, an affectionate companion, a good neighbor and a true friend.  He was pleasant in his manner and made friends with all who know him.  His companion preceded him in death, March 8, 1934.  Since that time he has made his home with his children and he passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fannie Reed, who with her husband had tenderly cared for him during his last illness. He is survived by two sons, Henry of Chenoa and Earl of Sims; three daughters, Irene Lamb of Palestine and Fanny Reed and Gertie Jones of near Fairfield; two brothers, John and Eli Barnard both of near Sims; thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandson, many other relatives and a host of friends who will mourn his passing. Funeral services were conducted from the Bailey Church, Wednesday morning, by Rev. John Rush, assisted by Rev. H.C. Mendenhall.  Interment was in the Bailey cemetery.

Nellie DAWSON Barnard, daughter of J.M. and Nancy Dawson, was born in Wayne Co., Feb. 10, 1888, passed away at her home in the Bailey neighborhood April 11, 1938, aged 50 years, two months and 1 day. She was united in marriage to Edgar Barnard Oct. 27, 1907. To this union were born two sons, Normie Barnard of Wayne City and Otho Barnard of Lexington, Ill. She confessed her faith in Christ March 27, 1905, and united with the New Zion Baptist church, later transferring her membership to the Arrington Prairie church, where she held membership until her death, living a consistent faithful life among those with whom she walked and a real Christian mother to her family in all their trials and troubles. During her long and lingering illness her faith in Christ never wavered. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, two sons and two daughter-in-laws, whom she loved as her very own, 1 grandson, Lester Glenn, her mother Mrs. Mary Dawson of Decatur, three brothers, Oliver of Decatur, Curtis of Chenoa, and Kelly of Sims, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Cravens of Decatur and Mrs. Lu Downen of Portland, Oregon. Her father, 1 brother and 2 sisters having preceded her in death. Besides a host of other relatives and friends are left to carry on and one more link is forged in our chain bounding us to the eternal world beyond. Funeral services were held at the Bailey church, April 13, conducted by Rev. Byers, assisted by Rev. Jessie4 Miller and Rev. H.C. Mendenhall. Interment in the Bailey cemetery.

Eli D. Barnard Dies In Western Wayne

Eli D. Barnard, well-known farmer in western Wayne county, passed away Thursday evening, May 28th, 1942 at his home in Hickory Hill township. He had been in failing health for three months. He was aged 79 years eight months and eleven days. Funeral services were held at the Bailey church Saturday morning by Rev. Guy Roney, assisted by Rev. Stephen Shehorn. Burial was in the Bailey cemetery.

MELVINA BARNARD

Melvina, daughter of Alfred and Sally Henson, was born in Wayne County, June 27, 1861. She was united in October 4, 1885. Seven children were born to this union, two of whom died in early childhood. Her entire life has been spent in and near the Bailey Community in Wayne County, where she reared her family and with her companion and children she contributed to the development and progress of this section of the county. Her life will long be remembered by those who knew her and her memory will be a rich heritage to her loved ones. In early womanhood she united with the General Baptist Church at Bailey and remained a faithful member of this congregation during her life. For several years she has not enjoyed good health and since the passing of her companion last May 28th, her condition grew steadily worse and the end came peacefully at the home of her son, Ralph, Tuesday afternoon, November 24, 1942, age 81 years, four month and twenty-seven days. She is survived by four sons, Edgar, Lewis, Ralph and Elmer and one daughter, Mahala Ferguson all of this community, twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends, who will mourn her passing. Funeral services were conducted from the Bailey Church, Thursday morning, November 26th, by Rev. Guy Roney. Interment was in the Bailey cemetery.

Staff Sergeant Lester L. (Pete) Boswell, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oran Boswell, five miles south of Wayne City, was killed in action in North Africa on April 23rd according to word received by his parents. Young Boswell enlisted in the Army on October 14, 1940, and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina until October 14, 1940 and was sent to Africa, where he took part in the invasion of the continent on November 7. Sgt. Boswell on January 10, 1942, while home on furlough was married to Miss. Maxine Draper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Draper, who survives. They had no children. Before entering the service he was employed at Roth Dairy Co. in Mt. Vernon. In a recent letter to his parents he stated "Africa is not such a bad place, but it is not like the United States. I am keeping my courage high and will be home some day". Mr. and Mrs. Boswell have one other child a daughter, (Irma) fourteen years old.

SKETCH OF JOHN E. BARNARD

Funeral services for John E. Barnard were held at the Bailey church, Thursday morning by Rev. R. C. Butcher and Rev. Jesse Miller. Burial was in the cemetery nearby. He had been in failing health several months and death occurred at his home in Berry township, Tuesday afternoon, August 24th, 1943 at the age of 78 years, six months and seven days. John Edgeworth Barnard, son of John Henry and Elizabeth Barnard, was born at Booneville, Indiana, February 17, 1865. He came to Illinois at the age of twelve and located on a farm in what is now Berry Township. He grew to manhood in this vicinity and has spent his life there. In young manhood he professed his faith in Christ and united with the General Baptist church at Bailey and throughout his life he has been loyal to this faith. He was united in marriage with Mary Jane Malone, October 7, 1889. Five children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his faithful companion; one son, Ves; one daughter, Clara Henson, both of near Wayne City, and four grandchildren.

CLARENCE BARNARD, OF CISNE, DIES

Retired Farmer Had Been in Failing Health for Some Time Rites Friday

Clarence Barnard, 78, retired Cisne farmer, died at his home in that community about nine o’clock Wednesday morning, following a long period of failing health. Mr. Barnard operated a farm northwest of Geff for a number of years, retiring and moving into Cisne four years ago. Rites Friday Afternoon Funeral services will be conducted from the Cisne Methodist church at 1:30 Friday afternoon, with Rev. Charles B. Johnston, assisted by Rev. L.E. Lawler. Interment will be in Bailey cemetery. The DeSelms Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Clarence, son of Sylvester and Easter Barnard, was born in Hickory Hill Township February 22nd, 1880. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birth. Married In 1903 He was married to Effie Ellis August 19th, 1903, with no children being born to this union. Mr. Barnard first joined the Bailey church but later transferred his membership to the Cisne Methodist church. Surviving are his wife, Effie; two brothers, Arthur, of Wayne City, and Orda, of Cisne; three sisters, Mrs. George Read, Mrs. Lillie Barnard and Mrs. Hattie Wilson, all of Wayne City.

Died at Her Home North of Wayne City May 6th Rites Held Mary 8th.

Lillie A. daughter of Sylvester L. Barnard and Catherine L. Barnard, was born July 9th, 1886, in Wayne County, Illinois. After a brief illness, she died at her home north of Wayne City at 12:45 p.m., Wednesday, May 6th, 1959, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 6 days.  Funeral services were held May 8th from Bailey church. On March 21st, 1905, she was married to William H. Barnard. To this union a daughter and two sons were born: Mrs. Inez Manahan, of Johnsonville; Lowell, of Wayne City; and Russell Barnard, of Wayne City. In addition to her daughter and two sons, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Hattie Wilson, of Wayne City, and two brothers, Arthur Barnard, of Wayne City, and Orda Barnard, of Cisne, also survive. Her husband, William H. Barnard preceded her in death March 8th, 1957. Two sisters, Nettie Reed and Ella Dawson, of Wayne City and one brother, Clarence Barnard, of Cisne, also preceded her in death. Early in life she was converted at a meeting held at Bailey church and united with the Bailey Methodist church.

We'll miss her cheerful voice and friendly ways.
As often we'll recall the many happy days.
When her gay laughter and her happy smile,
Brightened life and made it seem so worth while.

 OBITUARY

W. H. Barnard, son of William and Dica Burgess Barnard was born March 18, 1882 in Wayne County, Illinois. After a brief illness he departed this life at Fairfield Memorial on Friday evening March 8, 1957, at the age of 74 years, 11 months and 20 days. His parents died when he was a small boy and he made his home with his uncle, John Hawkins, of near Orchardville. On March 21, 1905 he was united in marriage to Lillie A. Barnard.  To this union a daughter and two sons were born.  Mrs. Inez Manahan of Johnsonville, Lowell Barnard of Wayne City and Russel Barnard of McLeansboro. In addition to his wife, his daughter and two sons, he leaves 4 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a half brother, James T. Scott of Springfield, a half sister, Mrs Myrtle Elliott of Bucyrus, MO, and a host of relatives. Some 50 years ago he was converted in a meeting held at Bailey Church and united with Bailey Methodist Church.  He loved his home and the ties between him and his family were very strong. They will always cherish the memories of things he did for them. He was a farmer by trade and usually called Bill. by his friends with whom he liked to talk and joke with.  He was liked for his kindheartedness, friendly disposition towards others.  His home was open at all times to his relatives and friends.  It was a pleasure to visit in his home.  His voice is still and we shall live to meet him on heavens bright shore. The funeral was at Bailey Church Monday, March 11, at 2 p.m. conducted by Bro. H. G. Coventry. Bro.  Jess Miller. He was laid to rest in Bailey Cemetery

JOHN BULLARD, OF JOHNSONVILLE, DIES

Lifelong Northern Wayne Farmer Passed Away Monday After Noon At His Home.

John Bullard, 73, a Johnsonville farmer, died at his home near that community Monday afternoon, following an acute illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Johnsonville Methodist church, with Rev. Jesse Miller officiating. Interment was in the Bailey cemetery. The Crippin Funeral Home was in charge. Born in 1886 John son of Lawrence and Emma Bullard, was born in Wayne county October 5th, 1886.  He grew to manhood and spent his life in the vicinity of his birth. Several years ago he professed faith in Christ and was baptized by Rev. Clifton. He was married to Martha Malone,  February 4th, 1908, with three children born to this union.  A daughter, Wanda, died at the age of three years. Surviving are his wife: two sons, Lowell  and Leonard,  four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Harve, Ed, Fred and Virgil Bullard,  three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Brown,  Rhoda, wife of Justin Bunnell, and Mrs. Irene Leach.

Edgar Barnard Of Wayne City Dies At Age 82

Edgar Barnard, 82, of Wayne City, died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday at the Fairfield Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Bailey Baptist church, of which he had been a member since 1907. Burial will be in the Bailey cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City, where friends may call after 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Barnard was born August 31, 1886, in Wayne county, the son of Eli and Melvina  (Henson) Barnard. On October 27, 1907, he was married to Nellie Dawson, who died in 1938. Survivors include two sons, Normie Barnard of Wayne City and Otho Barnard of Chenoa; two brothers, Ralph Barnard of Cisne and Elmer Barnard of Johnsonville; one sister, Mrs. Mahala Shaw; and five grandchildren.

The Richardson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Was Retired FarmerMr. Barnard, a retired farmer, died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday at Memorial hospital. He was born in Wayne county Aug. 31, 1886, the son of Eli and Melvina Henson Barnard. On Oct. 27, 1907, he was married to Nellie Dawson, who preceded him in death in 1938. He had been a member of the Bailey church since 1907. Surviving are two sons, Normie, of Wayne City, and Otho, of Chenoa; two brothers, Ralph Barnard, of Cisne; and Elmer Barnard, of Johnsonville; one sister, Mrs. Mahala Shaw; and five grandchildren.

SYLVESTER   (VESS) BARNARD Dies at Memorial Hospital

A well-known resident of the Wayne City area, Sylvester (Vess) Barnard, 69, died at 11/55 o’clock Friday night at Fairfield Memorial hospital where he was admitted three hours earlier. Mr. Barnard had been in failing health for the past year and had been under doctor’s care. That morning he visited his doctor. Later in the day his condition worsened and that night he was moved to the hospital. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Barnard was a long time farm operator, stock raiser and trucker. He was born in the Wayne City area July 6, 1901, the son of John and Jane (Malone) Barnard. On October 11, 1943, he was married to Josie Henderson, of Sims, a semi-invalid Years ago he was converted at Bailey church. Final rites were held at Richardson’s chapel Monday (today) with Rev. Ray Phillips in charge. Burial was in Bailey cemetery. Surviving are his widow; and one sister, Mrs. Luna (Clara) Henson, of Wayne City. The family had no children. He was a nephew of former sheriff Arthur Barnard.

Everett Burkitt, 83, Dies [1/17/1977]

Everett Burkitt, 83, a retired farmer who lived north of Keenes, died at 1:15 pm. Monday at his home on Rt1, Bluford.

He was the brother of the late Ernest Burkitt, who was sheriff of Wayne County during the 1930’s. He was also a brother-in-law of Roy and Burl Shaw and Lula Grubb, all of Fairfield.

Services Conducted

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix with Elder Russell Blackford, of Fairfield, assisted by Elder Olen Henson. Burial was in the New Home Cemetery.

Mr. Burkitt was born in Hickory Hills township in Wayne County, Dec. 12, 1893, the son of William and Parthelia (Henson) Burkitt. On May 20, 1916, he was married to Ora Shaw in Wayne County. She died Oct. 5, 1938.

Surviving are two sons, Dale, of Bluford; and Lowell, of Batavia; five daughters, Veraee Wilcox, of Shelbyville; Nadean Grunder, of Urbana; Lela Pierce, of Bluford; Alice French, of Aurora; Ruth Witzel, of Mt Vernon; 22 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, , Earl, of Mt Vernon; and John, of Okawville.

He  was preceded in death by his parents’ his brother, Ernest; two sons; one sister; and one great-grandson.

Josie (Henderson) Barnard Fairfield

Josie Barnard, 73, a resident at Way Fair Restorium, died Wednesday evening at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Barnard was a former resident of Wayne City and a member of the Wayne City Christian Church. She was born Nov. 2, 1903, in Wayne county, the daughter of Leander and Mary (Risley) Henderson.  She was married to Vess Barnard. He preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Richardson Funeral Chapel in Wayne City, with Ron Mullins officiating. Burial will be in Bailey Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral chapel today after 6 p.m.  Mrs. Barnard is survived by one brother, George Henderson, of Sims.

Martha Bullard, 92, a former Cisne woman who has lived in Fairfield’s High Rise apartments the last five years, died at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was the widow of John Bullard.  Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hosselton Funeral Home in Cisne with burial in the Bailey Cemetery, Wayne County, Illinois.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Bullard was born in Wayne County December 12, 1884, the daughter of James and Lizzie (Withrow) Malone.  She was married to John Bullard in Wayne County in 1908.  He preceded her in death. She was a housewife and a member of the Rock Branch General Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Leonard, of Wayne City; and Lowell, of Cisne; four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.   Preceding her in death were one daughter, Wanda; five brothers and five sisters, and her parents.

WAYNE CITY FARMER DIES

ROBERT S. BUCHANAN, 49, a well-known Wayne City area farmer who lives south of Keenes in Four Mile Township, was found dead in his bed at 6:30 Tuesday morning. Coroner Bob Johnson was initially called to investigate, but it was learned that Mr. Buchanan had been under a physicians care for a heart condition. He apparently suffered a heart attack, the press was told. His wife Pauline, spoke to him at 6:15 but found him just a few minutes later.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City, with Rev. H. H. Mayberry officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Mr. Buchanan was born in Wayne County Dec. 16,1927, the son of Joe and Mabel Trotter Buchanan. On Dec. 16, 1948 he married to Pauline Stephenson, who survives. He spent most of his life in Wayne County and had a good sized farming operation, the press was told.

Surviving besides his wife are one son Robert J. of Wayne City; two daughters, Judith Ann Buchanan, of Wayne City and Mrs. Roger (Vicky) Solomon of Wayne City; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Buchanan, of Wayne City; two brothers Jerry and Gene, both of Wayne City; and one sister Mrs. George (Joan) Kissner of Wayne City.

Mrs. Ruth Barnard, 76 Rural Cisne Succumbs

Mrs. Ruth Barnard, 76, Rt. 2, Cisne, the wife of Ralph Barnard, died at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 1985, at Franklin Skill Care Center in Benton. Mrs. Barnard was a resident of the Benton nursing home for a short time, the Press was told. She was the mother of Robert Barnard, of Cisne. Services Tuesday Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bailey Church near Wayne City, with Rev. Roger Tate and Rev. Shirley Milner officiating. Interment will follow in Bailey Cemetery. Visitation will be conducted for family and friends after 6 p.m. Monday (tonight) at Richardson Funeral Home, Wayne City. Born in Wayne County, July 22, 1908, Mrs. Barnard was the daughter of Frank and Olive Lowe Peddicord. She was wed to Ralph Barnard Oct. 13, 1926. Mrs. Barnard was a housewife and homemaker during her marriage. She was a member of Bailey Church. Survivors include her husband, Ralph Barnard, of Cisne; three sons, Robert Barnard; Dale Barnard; Davis Paul Barnard; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Sharon) Zimmerman; a brother, Stanley Peddicord; two sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Carmen) Barnard, of Wayne City; Mrs. Hobart (Lois) Weaver; a step-sister, Mrs. Normie (Ester) Barnard; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

VICTOR W. (BILL) BRUCE, 84, DIES PLAN SATURDAY RITES

Victor W. (Bill) Bruce, 84, of 1106 Leinger Road, died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1993, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Ind. Mr. Bruce was treated at Fairfield Memorial Hospital's emergency room Friday night after vomiting blood, and was then Life Flighted to Evansville hospital about midnight. He had recently undergone leg by-pass surgery. He was a well-known retired sawmill operator.

FUNERAL SEVICES

Funeral rites will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Johnson Funeral Home, with Brother James Taylor and Brother Carroll Kalkae officiating. Internment will be Richland cemetery south of Boyleston. Visitation at the Johnson Chapel will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. He was born in Big Mound Township October 13 1908. On March 30, 1929, he was married to Muriel Jones. Mr. Bruce was a member of the Richland Christian Church near Boyleston for around 70 years THE SURVIVORS

Ralph Barnard Dies At Home On Rural Route 2, Cisne

Ralph Barnard, 91, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb.3, 1991, at his home on R.R.2, Cisne. He was a retired farmer. Rites Conducted Funeral services were conducted Wednesday from the Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City, with Rev. Roger Tate and Rev. Shirley Milner officiating. Burial was in Bailey cemetery north of Wayne City. He was born in Wayne County, July 2, 1899, the son of Eli and Melvina Henson Barnard. Mr. Barnard was married to the former Ruth Peddicord. She preceded him in death May 18, 1985. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the Bailey Church near Wayne City. The Survivors Surviving are three sons, Robert Barnard, Dale Barnard and David Paul Barnard; one daughter, Sharon Zimmerman; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Muriel Bruce, 92, Dies

Mrs. Muriel Catherine (Jones) Bruce, 92, died Sunday April 7, 2002 at 12:30 p.m. at Fairfield Memorial Skill Care.

SERVICE WEDNESDAY

Services will be held at 10:00 a. m. Wednesday at Johnson's Chapel with Brother Carroll Kakac officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 6 - 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home Burial will be in Richardson Cemetery. She was born January 18, 1910 to Walter and Adda (Smith) Jones. She married Victor "Bill" Bruce on March 30, 1929. He preceded her in death June 2, 1993.

OLDEST MEMBER

Mrs. Bruce was the oldest member of Richland Congregational Christian Church. Survivors include two sons, Raymond (Pauline) Bruce and Robert (Mary Jo) Bruce seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, one brother and one half-brother who lost his life on the USS Arizona during the Pearl Harbor attack.

Eleanor Bailey

85, of Wayne City died 9:40 p.m. March 7, 2003, at Mt. Vernon Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker and had been a cook at area restaurants. She was born June 22, 1917, in Kankakee County to Winifred (LEWIS) and Anthony Smith. On June 12, 1986, she married Loren “Dutch” Bailey in Mt. Vernon; he preceded her in death on August 12, 1994. Services are set for 2 p.m. today ant York Funeral Home in Wayne City. The Rev. Richard McCormick will officiate. Burial will be in the Garrison Cemetery in Hamilton County.

Survivors include sons Raymond Meredith and wife Rose of Kankakee and Duane Meredith and wife Carol Ann of Katy, Texas; daughter Bonnie Smith and Husband Jack of Wayne City; grandchildren Jackie Mathews and husband Brian of Wayne City, Susan Youngblood and husband Church of Wayne City, Tony Smith of Arrowsmith, Scott Smith of Wayne City, Cheryl Jozwaik of Katy, Texas, Larry Meredith and wife Marie of Katy Texas, and Ray, Bob, and Becky Meredith of Kankakee. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Max Smith. Mrs. Bailey attended Ellis Mound Church, had been a member of the Happy Days Club in Wayne City and had enjoyed attending Wayne City Senior Citizens.

DRUCILLA M. BOZARTH

87 of Wayne City, formerly of Keens died 5:45 a.m. Sept. 27, 2003, in Wayne City. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Bozarth was born Sept. 6 1916, in Wayne County to Alonzo and Ida Mae (BAILEY) Withrow. She married Burrell Bozarth Dec. 21, 1933; he survives. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City. The Rev. Richard McCormick will officiate. Burial will follow in the Thomason Cemetery. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bozarth is survived by sons Chester Bozarth of Oswego and Connie Bozarth of Keens; daughters Jean McSorley and husband Dick of Wayne City and Brenda Powell of Wilmington; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons; two grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and 15 brothers and sisters.

65 year old Fairfield resident, Nell Marie Bankston, died at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30th 2005 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are her husband, Leon; 2 daughters, Terry McGill and Dana Wilson both of Fairfield; a son, Jason of Evansville; 2 sisters, Brenda Oakley of Gilmer, Texas and Lana Odum of Kennett, Missouri; 5 brothers, Joe Braswell of Pascola, Missouri, George Braswell of Atlanta, Texas, J.D. Braswell of Dexter, Missouri, Warren Braswell of West Memphis, Arkansas and Troy Braswell of Belton, Missouri; 5 grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Nell Marie Bankston will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2nd at the Johnson Funeral Home in Fairfield.  Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1st at the Johnson Funeral Home in Fairfield.

79-year-old former Wayne City resident, Ruth A. Ballard of Mount Vernon, died at 7:45 Sunday evening, December 18, 2005 in Mount Vernon. She was retired from Airtex Products in Fairfield.

Survivors include sons, Joe Ballard, Jr. and Ernie Ballard of Mount Vernon and Jerry Ballard of Bluford; two sisters, Lois Borader of Fulton, KY, and Wanda Harris of Woodlawn, IL; five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Ruth A. Ballard will be 10 a.m. Thursday, December 22, at the Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City with burial in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, at the Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City.

88, Wayne City, died at 3:30 pm yesterday at Mt. Vernon Manor Nursing Home.
He was born in Wayne county on April 21, 1883, the son of Washington and Lucinda (Bennett) Butler.  He was married on Oct 21, 1911 to Eva Miller who died on April 26, 1961.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 pm at Richardson Chapel in Wayne City with Rev. Bill Gammon and Rev. Russell Monroe officiating.  Burial will bein Olive Branch cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral chapel after 5:00 pm Friday.

Bernice Bowden, 82 of Chenoa, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007 at 2:46 p.m. at the Meadows Mennorrite Nursing Home at Chenoa.
She was a retired employee of Sparton Manufacturing at Flora. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Hosselton Funeral Home in Cisne with burial in Wesley Chapel Cemetery at Johnsonville.  Visitation was held Sunday from 1 - 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Bernice was born Feb. 14, 1925 at Johnsonville to Anthony and Bessie Hill Pennington. She married John W. Bowden Oct. 7, 1946 at Chicago. He preceded her in death Jan. 28, 1989. Bernice was a member of the Community of Christ Church of Flora.
Survivors include two daughters, Margie (Dave) Stull of Chenoa and Joyce Moit of Sebring, Fla.; one son, Larry (Nina) of Fairbury; eight grandchildren; and 15 great¬grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, a daughter, four brothers, one sister, two stepsons and her parents.

Edwin C. Borah Of Sims Dies; Retired School Man

Edwin C. Borah, 81, of Sims, a well-known retired school principal and teacher, died at 1:17 a.m. Wednesday, Apr. 26, 1995, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health. Mr. Borah was principal and teacher at Wayne City Grade School for 29 years and in education for 42 years.

Rites Friday

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City, with Rev. W.C. Ward officiating.  Interment will be in Pin Oak Cemetery north of Sims.  Visitation at the Richardson Funeral Home will be after 6 p.m. Thursday (tonight).

Mr. Borah was born at Sims Nov. 10, 1913, the son of Jeptha and Grace Smith Borah. He was marred to Georgia Jines, also a teacher.

Mr. Borah gained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from southern Illinois University and McKendree College. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. Memorials may be made to the Fairfield Public Library or to the Borah Scholarship Fund at Wayne City Unit 100 School District.

The Survivors

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Dr. Homer (Amber Glenn) Hanson, of Carbondale; one sister, Golda Minton of Fairfield; and one nephew.

JEPTHA MALEN BORAH

Jeptha Malen Borah, son of George and Mary Borah, was born near Sims, Illinois,  February 15th, 1885.  He departed this life May 30, 1930 at the age of 45 years, 3 months and 15 days.  He was the oldest son of a family of five children. He was united in marriage to Miss Grace Smith, July 26, 1906.  To this union were born four children; Mrs. Glen Willeman, of Wayne City, Illinois, Mrs. Hazel Weaver, of Fairfield, Illinois and Golda and Edwin, at home. He was converted and united with the Sims Christian church in 1906, of which church he was a member at the time of his death.  He was baptized by his brother, Rev. Ed Borah. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, his four children, his mother, Mrs. George Borah, of Sims, Illinois, one brother, Rev. Ed Borah, of Haubstadt, Indiana, three sisters, Mrs. Lottie Howell, Mrs. Dora Henderson, and Mrs. Nell Tibbs, all of Sims, Illinois, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jep, as he was known to his friends, has been active in the public affairs of life and has filled positions of trust and honor.  He had a reputation for fearlessness and courage and in each position filled bhy him he did his full and complete duty.  He will be missed in his usual walks of life, but especially will he be missed in the home.  The sorrowing family have the sympathy of their wide circle of friends.

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining.

Thy fate is the common fatge of all,

Into each life some rain must fall;

Some days much be dark and dreary.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday, afternoon at 2:30, June 1st, 1930 at the First Christian church, Sims, Illinois, conducted by Rev. Walter Fasnacht, of Louisville, Ill., assisted by Rev. Fred Lappin, of Wayne City, Illinois:  The funeral was attended by a large crowd.  Interment taking place in Pin Oak cemetery. Those attending the funeral from a distance were:  Rev. and Mrs. Ed Borah of Haubstadt, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Burkett, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Burkett of Benton, Ill., Ellen Burkett, of Chicago, Illinois;  Mr. and Mrs. Henry Desch and Harve Desch of Lincold, Ill.;  John Curry, Mrs. Raymond Barr, Mr. and Mrs. Max Wright and Mrs. Ruth Thalman, of Centralia, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Martin, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Borah, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Williamson and Baily Smith, all of Mt. Vernon, June Curry of Chicago, Mrs. Ester Smith of Lincoln, Ill., Mr. Fred Rogers of Springfield, Ill.; Mr. James Smith of Wilmington, Ill.; Miss Thelma Tibbs, of Alton, Ill., and Miss Nona Tunnel, of Salem, Ill.
