GLEN SMITH
Glen E. Smith, 88, of Route 1, Wayne City, died 3:03 a.m.
January 4, 2004, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer and
carpenter. He was born May 21, 1915, in Hamilton County, he was a son of Ross
and Nellie (Shell) Smith. He married Louise Jones on September 8, 1948 and she
survives in Wayne City. Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Richardson
Funeral Home in Wayne City with Rev. Leland Gaienany officiating. Burial will
be in Olive Branch Cemetery. Mr. Smith was a member of the Long Prairie
Missionary Church, the Fairfield VFW and the Fairfield American Legion. He was
a veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother
Herman Smith and two sisters, Maxine Pelcher and Lucille Youngblood, all of
Wayne City.

MRS. NELLIE SMITH
Mrs. Nellie Smith, 80 of Keens, died at 12.55 p.m.
Thursday at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2p.m.
today at the Richardson Funeral Chapel in Wayne City. Burial will be in Olive
Branch Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born in Wayne County on March 3, 1894, the
daughter of Marcus and Ellen (Terry? Cary) Shell. In 1911 she married Ross
(Roscoe) Smith, who proceeded her in death in 1954. Survivors include two sons
Glen and Herman Smith both of Wayne city; four daughters Mrs. Golda Robertson,
Mrs. Maxine Pilcher, Mrs. Lucille Youngblood, all of Wayne City and Mrs.
Imogene (Jackie) Mordic, Fairfield; eight grandchildren and three great
grandchildren; two brothers, Bernie Shell Mt. Vernon. Floyd Shell, McLeansboro;
one sister Junie Shell, Wayne City; two half brothers Raymond Shell and Roy
Shell both of Muncie Indiana; and two half sisters, Mrs. Bertha Preist, Carmi
and Mrs. Esther Favors, Muncie Indiana.

Chalon "Homer" Mayberry, 65, of Rockford
Illinois, died last week at his home following a lengthy bout with cancer.
Friends may call this evening (Monday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Delehanty
funeral Home in Rockford. The body will be cremated. He was born May 12, 1926,
at Aden to Fred and Nola Witter Mayberry. Ha was married September 1, 1948 at
Morganfield Ky., to Imogene B. Headlee, who survives. Mr. Mayberry grew up in
Wayne City area and for a time resided in Fairfield, where he was a truck
driver. Mr. Mayberry was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War
Post 9759 of Rockford and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Roscoe, Illinois. A
veteran of WWII, he retired from White Consolidated Industries in Belvedere,
Ill. Also surviving are two sons, Jerry and Jack Mayberry, both of Rockford;
four daughters Jean Mayberry of Sioux City, Iowa, Linda Relis of Oceana,
California, Sandra Sundquist of Rockford and Jannet Hada of Abileene, Texas; a
sister Wilma Kohl of Rockford; and four grandchildren. Preceding him in death
were his parents and two brothers, Russell and Harley Mayberry.

Mrs. Hazel Lane, 86 Dies; Rites held at Wayne City
Mrs. Hazel Smith, 86, a housewife of Rt. 2 Dahlgren, died
3:55 a.m. Friday March 20, 1992, at Good Samaritan Hospital, where she had
undergone surgery.
Rites Conducted Funeral services were conducted
Sunday afternoon from Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City, with Bro. Oakley
Miller officiating. Burial was at the Olive Branch Cemetery. She was born in
Wayne County February 4, 1906, the daughter of Grover and Lochie (Jones) Smith.
She was married to Clarence Lane, who proceeded her in death March 30, 1986.
Mrs. Lane was a member of the Belle Prairie Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter-in-law,
Audrey Lane of Carpentersville; one sister Bonnie Rayburn of Bristow, Okla.;
two grandsons, Randy Lane of Hampshire IL.; and Jerry Lane of Lake in the
Hills; one granddaughter, Laurie Selpien of Carpentersville; and three
great-grandchildren.

Clarence Lane
Clarence Lane, 78, retired Dahlgren farmer, died at 5:15
a.m. Sunday, March 30, 1986 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon of heart
failure. Mr. Lane was a lifetime resident of Arel township. His health started
to decline two years ago.
Funeral services was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the
Richardson Funeral Home, Wayne City, with Rev. Oakley Miller officiating.
Burial followed in the Olive Branch Cemetery near Wayne City. Visitation for
family and friends was held after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Lane
was born in Wayne County, March 9, 1908, the son of Cloyd and Lucy (Hansbrough)
Lane. He was united in marriage to Hazel Smith in Peoria, March 19, 1929. He
was a member of Bell Prairie Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Hazel Lane of Dahlgren; one sister, Etta Shell of Nature Trail
Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon; three grandchildren, Randall Lee, Jerald Eugene
Lane and Laurie Ann Selpien, all of Carpentersville, IL and two great-grandchildren,
Nichole Marie Lane and Mark Clarence III. Pallbearers were Randy Lane, Jerald
Lane, Kinney Selpien, Loren Bailey, Albert Severs and Terry Richardson.

Former Wayne City Man Dies
Gene Lane, 49, of Carpentersville, IL., a former Wayne City man,
died Friday morning, (January 25, 1980) unexpectedly in Grove City, Pa. Mr.
Lane a truck driver, had stopped in that town when he suffered a fatal heart
attack.
Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday (today) at the
Richardson's Chapel in Wayne City with Bro. Oakley Miller and Vernard Ile
officiating. Burial was in the Olive Branch cemetery south of Wayne City. Mr.
Lane was born in Wayne County near Wayne City on December 19, 1930, the son of
Clarence and Hazel (Smith) Lane. He was reared around Wayne City. He married to
a Wayne City girl, Audrey Forth, who survives. They have lived a number of
years at Carpentersville.
Surviving are his widow; two sons Randall Lee, of Dundee,
IL..; Jerald Eugene, at home; one daughter Laurie Ann, at home; one grandchild,
Nichole.

SAMUEL WHITE JR. OF KEENES AREA, DIES; SATURDAY RITES
Samuel White Jr., 53, of Keenes area, died at 2:50 p. m.
Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. An independent timber
worker, Mr. White had been involved in a logging accident which severely
injured his arm on September 21, 1987. At that time, doctors discovered he had
cancer.
SERVICES SATURDAY
Funeral services are to be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at
Richardson Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Mays officiating. Burial will be in
Garrison Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday. He was born November
13, 1934 in Wayne County to Samuel and Goldia McCullough White, who survives.
Mr. White grew up in the Wayne County area and attended several grade schools
in the area. He was not involved in churches or clubs, but had been saved three
months ago, sources close to the family said.

Surviving along with his wife are two sons, Monte White
and Jim White, both of Keenes; two daughters Cathy Ruehl of Worland, Wyoming
and Jeannie Hall of Wayne City; five grandchildren; and his mother-in-law,
Flora Smith of Wayne City.

DIES MONDAY
Kirby Smith, 80, of Wayne City died at 6:30 p.m. Monday
July 11, 1988 at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville following a lengthy illness.
He was a retired employee of Airtex Products of Fairfield. Funeral services
were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne
City with Rev. Richard McCormick officiating. Burial followed in the Olive
Branch Cemetery, located south of Wayne City. Pallbearers were Gary Rayburn,
Don Tucker, Kenny Sottlemeyer, Philip Butler, Donald Austin, Shawn Cates and Darrel
Smith. Mr. Smith was born November 9, 1907 in Wayne County, the son of Grover
and Lochie (Jones) Smith. He married the former Rizpah Harvey on February 9,
1929 and she survives. Surviving are his wife, Rizpah of Wayne City, 2 sons,
Lanny and Danny of Sims; 3 daughters Mrs. Leroy (Wilma) Rayburn; Mrs. Harry
(Wanda) Austin, of Wayne City; Mrs. Jerry (Yvonne) Herbstrith of Pekin; 3
sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Hazel ) Lane of Dahlgren; Mrs. Ulla (Alma) Marshel of
Sims, Mrs. George (Bonnie) Rayburn of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren and 12 great
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and a grandson.

March 8, 2001, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital, in Carbondale. He was a
fifth-grade teacher at Wayne City unit School District for 35 years and also
coached baseball and basketball for several years. Mr. Smith was born July 27,
1947, in Wayne City to Kirby D. and Rizpah (Harvey) Smith. He married Barbara
Weber. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist
Church of Wayne City. The Rev. Jim Peak officiating. Burial will be in the
Olive Branch Cemetery near Wayne City. He is survived by one son, Darrel Smith
of Wayne City; two daughters, Danya Burk and husband Anthony of Bluford and
Elisha Smith of Sims; one twin brother Lanny Smith and wife Donna of Mt.
Vernon; three sisters, Wilma Rayburn and husband Leroy of Wayne City, Wanda

GUY RAYMOND "FLICK" SMITH 70, a rural Dahlgren resident, the father of Bobby Smith,
of Fairfield, died at 7:15 p.m. Monday December 20, 1982, at Good Samaritan
Hospital at Mt. Vernon. He was a retired factory worker at Airtex.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at
the Richardson Funeral Home, of Wayne City, with rev. H. H. Mayberry
officiating. Burial was in the Garrison Cemetery near Aden. Mr. Smith was born
in Wayne County September 12, 1912, the son of Grover and Lochie (Jones) Smith.
He was married to the former Flora Mitchell on July 29, 1933, who survives.

Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Smith was born April 20,
1913, in Wayne County to James Wiley and Clara (Hand) Mitchell. She married
Raymond Fleck (Flick) Smith July 29,1933, in Wayne City; he died December 20,
1987. Funeral services will be held 2p.m. Tuesday at York Funeral Home in Wayne
City. The Rev. Don Rector will officiate. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery
in rural Hamilton County. She is survived by two daughters, Audrey Crockett and
husband Dale of Tensleep Wyo., and Deloris Ellis and husband Clyde of Bluford;
four sons, Bobby Smith and wife Darlene of Fairfield, Garry Smith and wife
Darlene of Cisne, Jack Smith and wife Bonnie of Wayne City and Tommy Smith and
wife Elaine of Dahlgren; 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and nine
great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was a member of Belle Prairie Missonary
Baptist Church. in addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her
parents, three sisters and two brothers.

MRS ALMA ROZELLA MARSHEL, 76; DIES WAYNE CITY RITES
WEDNESDAY
died Sunday November 24, 1991, at Way-Fair Restorium. She
was formerly of the Sims and rural Fairfield area. Mrs. Marshel, in failing
health for some time, had been at Way-Fair for about two years. Funeral
services will be at 2p.m. Wednesday from the Richardson Funeral Home, with Rev.
Berlin Scarbough officiating. Burial will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday. Pallbearers;
David Marshel, Larry Cisne, Kevin Kennedy, David Hawkins, Bret Marshel, Bart
Marshel and John Kennedy.
She was born May 22, 1915, in Wayne County, the daughter
of Grover and Lochie Jones Smith. She married Ulla Marshel. He died February 1,
1980. Also preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers, two
grandchildren and one-great-grandson. Mrs. Marshel was a member of the Olive
Branch Church. Surviving are three sons, Duane, Leland "Pete" and
David Marshel, all of Fairfield; five daughters, Ruth Young, Doneta Conclasure
and Mary Ellen Witlow, all of Fairfield; Patricia Cisne of Wayne City; and Vada
Kennedy of East St. Louis; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two
sisters Bonnie Rayburn of Oklahoma; and Hazel Lane of Dahlgren.

ULLA MARSHEL, 64, SIMS, DIES
a lifelong resident of Wayne County, died at 4 a.m.
Friday at his home in Sims from an apparent heart attack. Mr. Marshel had
suffered a heart attack six years ago. He was a retired farmer. Services were
conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Richardson Chapel in Wayne City, with Br. H.
H. Mayberry officiating. Burial was in the Olive Branch Cemetery. Mr. Marshel
was born in Sims August 31, 1915, the son of Parker and Phoebe Ellen (Ash)
Marshel. He was married April 28, 1934, to Alma Smith, who survives. In Early
married life they lived in northern Illinois. He was engaged in farming and
timber work. Later they moved to the Boyleston area and he continued farming.
Surviving are his widow, Alma three sons, Duane, of Fairfield; Leland
"Pete" of Fairfield; five daughters, Mrs. Jack (Vada) Kennedy, of
East St. Louis; Mrs. Doug (Ruth) Young and Mrs. Leon (Doneta) Colclasure, both
of Fairfield; Mrs. Marion (Patricia) Cisne, of Hanover Park and Mary Ellen
Marshel of Sims; three brothers, Rosier, of Anderson, Ind. Strauder, of
Rochelle; and Earl "Tom" of Sims; three sisters Lula Thomason, of Mt.
Vernon; Mrs. Bernert Brown, of McLeansboro; and Mrs. Elroe Maring, of Anderson,
Ind. 18 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. two grandsons preceded him in
death.

Clay Isaac Smith
Clay Isaac Smith, son of Grover and Lockie (Jones) Smith,
passed away suddenly, near his home at Mansfield, IL., October 25, 1945. He was
born May 23, 1910, near Dahlgren. He was united in marriage with Cora Irene
Thomason October 7, 1930. To this union four children were born, Donna Ruth,
Allen, Laverne and Larry, all at home. He leaves to mourn his passing a loving
wife, four children, father and mother, two brothers, three sisters Mrs. Hazel
Lane, Mrs. Bonnie Rayburn of Dahlgren and Mrs. Alma Marshel of Saybrook; a
loving father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wilse Thomason and a host of
relatives and friends. A loving one from us is gone, a voice we loved is
stilled. A place is vacant in our house that never can be filled.

Muriel Bruce, 92, Dies
Raymond & Robert's Mother
Mrs. Muriel Catherine (Jones) Bruce, 92, died Sunday
April 7, 2002 at 12:30 p.m. at Fairfield Memorial Skill Care. Services
will be held at 10:00 a. m. Wednesday at Johnson's Chapel with Brother Carroll
Kakac officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 6 - 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral
Home Burial will be in Richardson Cemetery. She was born January 18, 1910 to
Walter and Adda (Smith) Jones. She married Victor "Bill" Bruce on
March 30, 1929. He preceded her in death June 2, 1993.
Mrs. Bruce was the oldest member of Richland
Congregational Christian Church. Survivors include two sons, Raymond (Pauline)
Bruce and Robert (Mary Jo) Bruce seven grandchildren; seven great
grandchildren; one great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her
husband; parents; two sisters; one brother; and a half-brother who lost his
life on the USS Arizona during the Pearl Harbor attack.

VICTOR W. (BILL) BRUCE, 84, DIES PLAN SATURDAY RITES
Victor W. (Bill) Bruce, 84, of 1106 Leininger Road, died
at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 1993, at St. Mary's Medical Center in
Evansville, Ind. Mr. Bruce was treated at Fairfield Memorial Hospital's
emergency room Friday night after vomiting blood, and was then life flighted to
Evansville hospital about midnight. He had recently undergone leg by-pass
surgery. He was a well-known retired sawmill operator. Funeral rites will be
held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Johnson Funeral Home, with Brother James Taylor
and Brother Carroll Kalkae officiating. Internment will be Richland cemetery
south of Boyleston. Visitation at the Johnson Chapel will be 5 to 8 p.m.
Friday. He was born in Big Mound Township October 13 1908. On March 30, 1929,
he was married to Muriel Jones. Mr. Bruce was a member of the Richland
Christian Church near Boyleston for around 70 years.
Surviving are two sons, Robert of Fairfield and Raymond
of Fairfield; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
