INTERESTING STORY;
A civil war story has been passed down through the years. Confederate soldiers built a Fort Shipley on Skillet Fork in east Aden Il. These men were deserters from the Union army who opposed draft laws. As many as 100 men would come there from Illinois Kentucky Mo. and Tn. November 1864 the government ordered the fort seized and destroyed. Captain Calvin Shell of Southwest Wayne County was appointed to lead the mission. He and 30 other men moved in during the night, light snow falling and they reached the fort to find it empty of men or much else. Captain Shell and his men destroyed the fort as ordered. It is claimed to have been perhaps the most important mission done in Hamilton County during the Civil War. (Copied from History of Hamilton Co. Il. 1966 page 39.) also see Marcus Shell Obit
