Washington Loomis, deceased, was formerly a farmer on section 34, Hopkins Township. He was born Feb. 9, 1827, in the State of New York. He settled at Como, in Hopkins Township, in 1854, where he was a resident a little more than two years. He then bought 160 acres of land on section 34, Hopkins Township, and later made a further purchase of 130 acres. He continued the management of his farming interests until the fall of 1867, when he removed to Sterling. In the spring of 1868 he went to Waverly, Iowa, and engaged in the sale of agricultural implements and was occupied in that business until his death, which occurred July 30, 1870
While a resident of Hopkins Township he was prominent in local township official matters and acted in the capacity of Supervisor nine years, besides filling the position of Treasurer and other minor offices.
He was married Nov. 9, 1854, to Marcia G. Burdick, by whom he had six children, named William H., Carlton W., Frank W., Carrie A., Blanche A. and Henry E. The three last named are deceased. Mrs. Loomis was born Aug. 7, 1831, in the State of New York, and is the daughter of Joel C. and Mary (Baker) Burdick. The former was a native of Massachusetts and the latter was born in New York. Their children were Marcia G., William R., Joel C., Alexis C. and Clarence A.
