It was surveyed and platted by Charles R. Rood, a pioneer settler, farmer and surveyor who homesteaded on the north end of Albany, just over the line that became Garden Plain Township.
The triangular cemetery was divided from the most southern point to the rear by an undeveloped avenue, with a second undeveloped avenue bisecting it. The cemetery is maintained by the village. The first burial was that of Elijah Knowlton, who died in 1838, before the actual platting of the cemetery was done.
Most of the stones are more than 100 years old, many are older. Two of the marked graves were Duty Buck and E. O. Efner. Both died in the tornado that struck Albany June 3, 1860. Efner's family and friends often told of his tragic death. He reached the safety of a cellar with his family as the storm approached. He then came out of the cellar to get a wrap for his little child and, thus, was killed when struck by flying debris.
Transcribed by Christine Walters: These are the names and dates on the stones that I could read March 1998. I found several incorrect spellings.
I am also going to incorporate some additional information about these early settlers and family which will be in "notes". There are question marks where I was not sure of the letter or number.
Rood Cemetery, at Erie Road and First Avenue, is in the village of Albany.
