St. Marys Catholic Church

Tampico IL

Organized in 1875 by a committee of four including Thomas Burden, George Dee, Peter Burke and Maurice Fitzgerald. Prior to that time, as far back as 1860, the Rev. John Daly of Sterling held mass about three times a year. The church is located at the corner of East Fourth and North benton Streets.

The first pastor was R.V. McGuire in 1879, the parish included Tampico, Hume, Hahnaman, Montmorency and Prophetstown townships.

The rectory was completed in 1895 and replaced in 1929. In 1902 they began plans to build a new church - the old building was sold for $340. A new building was dedicated on September 8, 1904 by Rev.Peter Muldoon. In 1952 a Parish Hall was built on the corner of Fourth and benton Streets, completed in January 1954. In March 1951 a Bernardian automatic crillon was installed, a memorial to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Burden.
