Oct. 3 – Moved to Coleta. Those that moved us were C Overholser, 2 Bros Crom, Mr _____ & Geo. Wilfong. Weather fair

Oct. 6 – Mother in law was taken by Chas [13 year old], to Polo. We worked at home. Visited at Wm. Browns whose wife is sick with fever. Weather fair

Oct. 7 – Studied all day. Weather fair

Oct. 8 – Coleta 10 ½; Coleta 2 & SS convention; Coleta 7 PM. Weather rained nearly all day. Text in AM, 2 Cor. 4. 1,6; in evening Acts 11. 23.

Oct. 9 - Was at home all day. Worked about home. Weather rained toward evening.

Oct. 10 – All day at home. Weather rained nearly all day.

Oct. 11 – Called at J. Pro___ & at Mr. Witals. Weather fair Attended prayer Meeting at night in Chapel

Oct. 13 – Visited at A. Woods. Called at C. Overholsers. Dug garden house vault. Weather fair

Oct. 14 –Stayed at home & Studied. Weather fair

Oct. 15 – Coleta at 10 ½. Text: Jno. 5. 45. Otter Creek 2 ½ PM. Text: 1 Cor. 13. 9. Started for Association at Winneshik. Over night at Bro. Sweets, 5 miles west of Polo. Weather fair, but rained during the night.

Oct. 16 – Dined at S. Mannings. Called at Rev. Gardners who took my horse to R. Harmons. & Rev. France & I in Co. with Revs. Harrison & Eby went to Freeport. Called on Mother Wilter who is very sick. Over night at Dr. Pecks. Weather rained all day

Oct. 17 – Called on J. G. Kleckner & Saw Chas. T. Kleckner. Was taken to Winneshik Church by Bro. Krider. Dined at J. Kroff. At 2 PM Commenced our Ministerial Association. Over night at Bro. Sthroms. Weather fair

Oct. 18 – Held Session of Ministerial As. until 4 ½ PM when I was excused by As____. Was taken to near Dacotah by Bro. Phillips. I supped at his place then went to Depot at D____. Got to Mother Riches [mother-in-law] at 10.45 PM. Weather fair

Oct. 19 – Went to D. Wiants in Co. with Josiah Riche [brother-in-law]. Bot for a present for Josiah Riche’s baby 2 prs. hose, 60 cts. Over night at Mother Riches. Weather fair

Oct. 20 – Our son Otterbein [6 years old] & I were taken to Davis by Jas. Riche [brother-in-law] at 7 AM. Where we took train to Freeport, 21 cts ½ fare; Haldane 26 cts. Dined at Jno. Hurdles. Then went home via Polo & Milledgeville. Weather very fair. Roads extra good.

Oct. 21 – Was at home & we held our 1st QM today for Coleta Cir. There seems to [be] some peace & a looking up to God as far as I can see. The promise of the Salary was made on good faith. Rev. J. Johnson preached in the evening. Weather fair

Oct. 22 – Rev. P. M. France preached after the Love Feast.. Collection Amounted to 23.65. Communion at 12 M. Children’s Meeting at 2 ½. But I didn’t attend. Wife & I visited Mother Wilfong who is dangerously sick. Administered the Communion to her. Weather fair P. M. France preached again in the evening.

Oct. 23 – Went to Forreston on the way left horse at Rev. Hallowells. Took train to Haldane. Then went to Maryland St. Took train to Forreston. Then to Polo. Over night at Rev. Hallowells. Paid to Hiram Garmon $14.95; Wm. Hedrick $10.00; John Cambell, $5.00. Supped at E. M. Mullens. Weather fair

Oct. 24 – Dined at Rev. Posts. Went home. Weather fair

Oct. 25 – Was at home all day. Weather fair.

Oct. 26 – Visited at Mother Wilfongs & at Bro. Mannings. Weather fair. At evening visited at B. Beers. Rev. J. Johnson preached.

Oct. 27 – In Co. with J. Johnson visited at J. Hannahs. Called at M. M. Deets & at John Overholsers, Sr. Weather fair J. Johnson preached. 2 arose for prayers of the Church. “May the Lord give us a glorious revival.”

Oct. 28 – Sent $2.50 by Reg. letter to Dayton, O. for Cyclopedia. In PM gathered apples at Bro. Mannings. At Otter Creek in the evening Rev. J. Johnson preached. Weather rained in the PM.

Oct. 29 – Rev. J. Johnson preached in Coleta Morning & evening. I preached at Otter Creek at 2 ½ PM & at night at Greenwood. Text: Hebrews 10. 25; Luke 19. 1. Over night at Fred Hines. Weather fair

Oct. 30 – Went home. Visited at noon at Jerry Croms. Weather rained nearly all day.

Oct. 31 - Was at home all day. Weather fair.

Nov. 1 – Wife & I went to A. Woods. I went to Bro. Mannings again & got 3 sacks of apples. Weather fair

Nov. 2 – Called and got 5 lbs butter at Bro. Smiths & got 5 bushels Oats at Bro. N. V. Croms. Weather fair

Nov. 3 – (S to D/8 42 48 1882) Started for Dover via Sterling, Dixon, Mendota, Malden. R. R. fare 1.08; Lunch .25; [total] 1.33. Weather fair. Paid at Sterling for Sterling Gazette, 1 year, 1.00. Total paid out today, 2.33.

Nov. 4 – Walked to father Deals, Dover. Breakfasted & dined there. Supped at J. W. Masons. At 10 AM to 4 PM worked at perfecting the Dover Academy arrangement. Over night at Rev. W. H. Chandless. Weather fair Bot Stationary etc. 62; Paid on lease 25.

Nov. 5 – Weather rained & misty until 10 AM. Was taken to Van Orin by Rev. J. W. Baumgardner. Where I preached at 10 ½ AM. Dined at Rev. P. M. Frances. Attended preaching in Van Orin in evening. Rev. P. M. France preached. Over night at Rev. Baumgardners. Weather misty.

Nov. 6 – Returned home on train in Co. with Rev. T. F. Hallowell. Fare $1.01. Returned home by way of Johns Corner. The night was very dark. We could hardly make it. “May God Keep me in the light of heaven.”

Nov. 7 – Hauled Grubbs from Jerry Croms all day. Charles drove the team. Weather fair

Nov. 8 – Was at home all day. Weather fair.

Nov. 9 – Was at home all day. Weather misty. “O Lord give us grace that we may serve Thee more perfectly with reverence & fear.”

Nov. 10 – At home. Sent Card to Rev. W. L. Hayes & J. M. Riche. Weather fair. Attended lecture by Rev. O. M. Holbrook in M. E. Church in the evening.

Nov. 11 – Studied all day at home. Weather fair. But bad in the night with rain and a slight freeze up.

Nov. 12 – Coleta 10 ½ AM. Text: Hebrews 10. 24 & 25. Otter Creek: Luke 10. 42 1st clause. Greenwood in evening: Luke 10. 42 1st clause. Over night at W. M. Kennedy. Weather fair but cold

Nov. 21 – Called at Bro. Jno. Howes, at Jno. Overholsers, Sr. and visited & dined at Jno. Overholsers. Weather fair

Nov. 22 – Called at father Hannahs & at Barnett Beers. Visited and dined at David C. Overholsers. Weather fair, very.

Nov. 23 – Went & fetched Turnips at D. Overholsers. Weather getting cold and blustering.

Nov. 24 – Was at home all day. Weather fairer.

Nov. 25 – At home all day. Studied & read books. Hurt my side badly. Weather clouding for Snow. “God help us on the Morrow we pray.”

Nov. 26 – Missionary Discourse, Text: Math. 28. 16, 17. Otter Creek: Luke 10. 42. Greenwood, Ditto. Over night at Fred Hines. Weather fair. Roads bad with snow.

Nov. 27 – Went home early in the AM. Weather fair

Nov. 28 – . At home all day. Fixed the clock shelf in sitting room. Weather snowy.

Nov. 29 – Was at home all day. At morning attended prayer Meeting at home in Church. Weather fair.

Nov. 30 – At home all day. Weather fair. At night preached in Church at Coleta. Collected Benevolence Fund money. Text: Gen. 8. 20 to 22.

Dec. 1 – Visited Bro. Smith. Called at E. France, father. At J. B. Croms and at night with Wife visited at father Mekins. Weather very warm & Calm, in the night it got Stormy with Snow.

Dec. 2 – Was at home all day studying. Weather fair.

Dec. 3 – Coleta 10 ½ AM. Otter Creek 2 ½ PM. At night Rev. Von Wear in PM preached in my place at Coleta. He called it a farewell discourse, having united with the Congreational Church conducted to take work in Dacota at Ashton. He backed out. Weather fair

Dec. 4 - Was at home all day. Worked around home & read some. Weather changeable.

Dec. 5 – Went to Sterling. Bot Truss, $1.30. Guspilay, .75. Dry goods, 1.35. Soap, .20. Weather Snowed. Visited J. Winters & Mother Buntly.

Dec. 6 – Was at home all day. Weather snowed, got fearfully cold.

Dec. 7 –. The coldest day so far of the season. Thermometer Stood as follows, 10.,12., 14., and some places 18 degrees below zero. Apples & Potatoes froze in Cellar. At home all day.

Dec. 8 –Was at home all day. Weather cold.

Dec. 9 – At home all day. Weather fair, a little snowy however. Attended Rev. Brians Meeting in Christian Church in the evening.

Dec. 10 – Coleta 10 ½. Text: 1 Tim. 6. 12 1st P. In PM attended SS Convention in M. E. Church. At evening attended & addressed UB Womans Missionary Society in UB Church. Weather Snowy.

Dec. 11 – Called at M. V. Croms and W. O. B. Crom home. At night attended Meeting at Christian Church. Weather fair

Dec. 12 – Was at home all day. Weather fair.

Dec. 13 – Was at home all day. Attended prayer Meeting at night in Chapel.

Dec. 17 – Rev. Smith, College Agent, preached at Coleta & at Otter Creek for me. I preached at Coleta in the evening. Text: Luke 10. 42. Weather fair.

Dec. 20 – Was at home. Called durineg the day at Mother Mckins & Mother Winters. Weather rained nearly all day.

Dec. 25 – At Bro. Coes until after dinner, then went home. At night assisted at Christmas tree exercises at Coleta. Weather Snowy almost all day..

Dec. 27 – Was at home. Was sick with cold & headache. Weather fair, a little snowy

Dec. 29 - Went to Stirling, bought carpet. Weather fair

Dec. 31 - Preached at Coleta in AM. Otter Creek in PM & evening. At 9 PM I returned and preached in M. E. Church at Watchnight Service. Weather fair.

Jan. 1 – Was at home all day. Weather fair. Thermometer 3 [deg.] zero. “O Lord give me much Wisdom & heavenly Knowledge during this Year. I need thee every hour”

Jan. 2 – At Mr. Richert; visited father Stulsmith and Daniel Kingery. Prayed with him. At night preached at Otter Creek. Commenced a protracted meeting. Over night at Geo. Wilfongs. Weather fair. Text: Amos 6. 1.

Jan. 3 – (Otter Creek P. M.) Visited at Gabriel Hanna. Dined & visited at ____ Tracys & supped there. Sermon at night same Text as night before, Amos 6. 1. Over night at D. S. Manning. Weather fair. In Memoriam. The largest sky Rocket fell that was ever Known in this country.

Jan. 4 – Visited & over night at Elias Grundys. No meeting on acct. of a snow Storm.

Jan. 5 – Visited at Geo. Henries. Dined there. Visited at Bap Crouches; Mr. old ___ Chusemans. Called at Mr. Geo. Sugars. Over night at Gabe Hannas. Text at Chapel Amos 6. 1. Weather fair.

Jan. 6 – Visited at Mr. Bigbies, Mother Harveys, Volney Chaffies, Clinton Manning. Dined at E. M. Witmers. Supped at Geo. Wilfongs. Preached in Chapel. Text: Amos 6. 1. Went home. Weather fair.

Jan. 7 – (Otter Creek P. M.) Taught in S. School, Coleta, 10 ½. Text: Math. 16. 24-8. Greenwood at 2 ½, Amos 6. 1. Otter Creek, Luke 19. Over night at Dr. Coes. Weather fair.

Jan. 8 – All day at Dr. Coes. Weather cold. Service at night in Chapel at Otter Creek. Text: Math 7 ___. Went home. Weather.

Jan. 9 – At home all day. At evening went to Otter Creek, preached in Chapel. Text: Math. 16. 24. Over night at S. D, Mannings. Weather very cold 24 degrees & etc.

Jan. 10 – Was at S. D. Mannings all day. At night we held Meeting in Chapel. The Lord blessed us. The Weather was cold & blustering. Sleighing is good. Over night at S. D. Mannings.

Jan. 11 – At S. D. Mannings until 3 PM. Then went home. Was sick.

Jan. 12 – Was at home sick. Weather blustering.

Jan. 13 – 2nd Q.M. at Otter Creek. Recd Quarterage of $55.70. Over night at J. S. Coes. Weather very cold & blustering.

Jan. 14 – Love Feast by M. Bellows. Preaching by Elder. Collection for Church Erection Paid the Elder $19.00. Weather fair. Went home.

Jan. 15 – Visited Rev. Boles, Mothers Winters & Mikins. Over night at Gro. Wilfongs. Weather fair, a little snowy. Paid to C. Miller $8.00; S. S. Cobb 31.20.

Jan. 16 – We called at G. Hannas, then went to J. L. Coes where w stayed all day & all night. We had no Meeting on acct of a terrible snow Storm.

Jan. 17 – Visited at G. Hannas and S. D. Mannings. P. M. France Preached in Chapel. Then we went home. Weather fair.

Jan. 18 – Took Rev. P. M. France to Sterling. Left my Watch with C. Kistler. Sent 65.00 dol. to J. K. Bilhinin, $5.00 of which is for Church Erection. Also sent 14.04 to W. A. Shurey on his Book acct. Paid J. Muster for Stove, $8.00. Preached at Otter Creek. Text: Math. 16. 24. W. fair. Over night at E. Witmer

Jan. 19 – Visited at E. Witmers & at C. Mannings. Weather very cold and blustering. All day at E. Wilmers & over night. At night preached in Otter Creek Chapel. Weather cold.

Jan. 20 – At E. Wilmers until 3 PM when I went home. Weather very cold & blustering

Jan. 21 – At home all day, preached at Coleta in AM. Weather very cold and blustering. 30 [deg.] Zero.

Jan. 22 – At home all day. Weather cold.

Jan. 23 – Was at home all day. Had Company. Assisted Wife serving. Weather fair but cold. At family worship Wife was unusually blessed in a special petition for the Salvation of the family. Lord help us all.

Jan. 24 - Was at home all day. Weather fair but cold.

Jan. 25 – Pastoral Calls at Rev. Boles, Mothers Mikin, Buntley & Winters. Weather very much moderated. At night attended Meeting in Christian Church.

Jan. 26 – Was at home all day. At night called Meeting in Christian Church. Offered prayer. Weather misty. Visited at Jno. Overholser, Sr.

Jan. 27 – At home all day. At night attended Rev. Linsey at Christian Church. Weather fair.

Jan. 28 – Coleta 11 AM, 2 Cor. 7. 1. Otter Creek the Same. Subject viz. Christian Perfection. “O Lord, help us to be perfect in heart, mind & life. Especially so in Church.” Weather fair.

Jan. 29 – Was at home all day except making calls at Rev. Boles, C. Hurless, S. Ferguson, Dr. Rimage & at E. Olmsteads. Weather fair. .

Jan. 30 – Visited at N. Harts. Called at A. Woods. Weather became Cold, Stormy & blustering at noon.

Jan. 31 – Called at father Stahlsmiths & at S. S. Cobbs where I supped. Prayer Meeting at night. Weather very cold & disagreeable.

Feb. 1 – [Our 8th baby was born this Morning at 6 Oclock. Dr. Rumage assisted with Aunt Barbary Overholser. Weather very Snowy & Stormy.] This was crossed out.

Feb. 2 – Our 8th baby was born this morning at 6 o’clock; name Nellie Rebecca. Weather very Stormy. All day at home.

Feb. 3 – All day at home. Weather cold & Stormy.

Feb. 4 – Coleta Morning and evening. Text: James the last 2 verses. All day around home. Weather fair.

Feb. 5 – Monday was at home. Weather Cold.

Feb. 6 – At home all day. Weather Snowed in evening and night.

Feb. 7 – Went to Lanark for Mother Riche. Over night at father Wolfleys. The train being behind hand on acct of a broken rail I waited this train. Came at 9; in the Mean time I attended Church at the Dunkard Church. Weather fair.

Feb. 8 – Went home. Weather cold but clear.

Feb. 9 - At home all day. Called, however, at Jno. Overholser, Jr. & at Sr’s. and at Clark Vinsons. Weather fair.

Feb. 10 – At home all day. Weather cold.

Feb. 11 – At Coleta, 11. Read Discipline. Went to Otter Creek. No Meeting. Coleta at night. Acts 3. 13 @ text. Weather fair.

Feb. 12 – Sent $1.00 to J. B. Alden, 13 Vesey St., New York. Weather fair.

Feb. 13 – Visited at Jas. Smiths, P. Lenharts. Visited & dined at George Mulls. Visited at Mr. Conways. Called at Jno. Overholsers & at Chris Overholsers. Weather fair.

Feb. 14 – At home all day. At night attended prayer meeting in Chapel. Weather misty. Snow melting rapidly.

Feb. 15 - Was at home all day. Weather rainy.

Feb. 16 – Was at home all day. Weather changed to cold & misty.

Feb. 17 – Attended funeral of Mr. Sam Purghs Child. Rev. Van Swiggen Officiated. Weather fair. Roads icy.

Feb. 18 – Preached at Coleta. Text: Acts 4. 23. Otter Creek was too high to cross, hence didn’t go to Greenwood or Otter Creek. Weather fair.

Feb. 19 - Was at home all day. Attended M. E. Prayer Meeting. Weather fair.

Feb. 20 – Was at home all day. Weather fair.

Feb. 21 – At home. Weather rainy.

Feb. 22 – At home all day. Sickness in the family. Charles was sick with Catarral fever.[Carrhal fever, an old term for a number of respiratory diseases.].

Feb. 23 - Was at home all day. Weather fair. Bought P. O. Box, 20 cts.

Feb. 24 – Was at home & Studied. Weather bad with snow & rain.

Feb. 25 – Coleta in AM. Text: Subject, “Requirements in Prayer”. Went to Otter Creek. No audience. Visited D. S. Manning. Weather fair.

Feb. 26 -. Sent $2.00 to Dayton for Telescope for M. V. Crom. Bought Clothes Ringer from S. Fergeson. Attended M. E. Meeting in the evening. Weather fair. Preached in M. E. Church. Text: Romans 1. 16.

Feb. 27 – Called at Jno. Deets. Visited at Sanforths. Called at Wm. Deets. Weather fair.

Feb. 28 - Was at home. Weather fair. Getting warm & thawing.

Mar. 1 – Was at home. Our Harriett [2 years old, m. Arthur W. Nicholas] is quite sick with catarral fever. Weather is very warm.

Mar. 2 – Was at home all day. At night preached in M. E. Church. Weather Snowed in evening.

Mar. 3 – At home & Studied. Weather fair.

Mar. 4 – Coleta 10 AM. Text: Acts 9. 22. Went to Greenwood. No service. Supped at Fred Hines. Then rode to Otter Creek. No service. Weather fair. Went home.

Mar. 6 – Was at home all day. At night attended Rev. Bales Protracted Meeting at M. E. Church. Rev. Saterfield preached. Weather cold & windy

Mar. 12 – Sent 3 $ to P. Nicklas for UB in Christ for J. M. Winters, J. B. & M. V. Crom, J. P. Overholser, E. Franforth & J. Deets. Weather fair.

Mar. 13 – At home all day. Weather fair.

Mar. 14 – Went to Hickory Grove and preached funeral for John Wick aged 90 yrs., I mo. & 14 days. Text: Math. 25. 23. Rev. M. V. Crom assisted. Weather very fair. Sent letters to Rev. Ben Bender [probably a brother] & Geo. Baye.

Mar. 15 – Was at home. Weather fair. At night attended Church in M. E. Church. Attended last day of school exercises at Union S. House.

Mar. 16 – Was at home all day. At night attended service at M. E. Church. Weather snowed in PM.

Mar. 17 – At home all day. Weather very fair.

Mar. 18 – Rev. Van Preached in My place at Coleta at 10 AM. At 2 PM held meeting at Greenwood. Text: Titus 2. 7 & 8 & 9 & 10. Went home after supper at G.Hines. At night the U. B. Church and her preacher was severely snubbed by Rev. Van getting his daughter baptized by M. E. Minister in M. E. Church. Weather cold & Windy.

Mar. 19 – Was at home all day. Weather cold.

Mar. 20 – At home all day. At night attended Meeting in M. E. Church. Weather more moderate.

Mar. 21 – Went & visited at Mr. William Conaway whose son George died at 8.20 AM. Went home. Weather fair.

Mar. 22 - Attended funeral of Geo. H. Conaway aged 17 yrs. & 23 days. Text: 1 Pet. 7. 4, 5, 7, 8. Dined at Wm. Conaway at night. We had a glorious prayer meeting in U. B. Church. Weather fair.

Mar. 23 – Visited at D. C. Overholser. Went to M. Hames. Called at J. Hames. Visited at Barnet Beers & dined there. Visited at Wm. Harrows. Held Services in Church at Coleta. Text: 1 Thess 5. 9 & 10 vrs. Weather fair.

Mar. 24 - At home all day. Studied. At night preached in Chapel. The house was full. Text: Mathew 13. 24 & 25 verses. One was converted. Weather fair but snowed during the night.

Mar. 25 – Text at Coleta 1 Cor. 15. 3, 4. No preaching at Otter Creek. Service at Coleta at night. Text: Is. 45. 22. Weather very Snowy.

Mar. 26 – At home. Visited at Wm. Kennedys & Mother Bundleys. At night preached. Text: Is. 45. 9.

June 28 – Started home. Allice Gardner went with me. Owing to my horse getting down with cholera only got to Los Frances where I tarried until PM. We got to Coleta at 6.15. Weather fair.

June 29 – In AM hoed my Potatoes. At 1 ½ Charley took me to Galt where I took train for Fenton via Denrock. 28 cts, ½ fare. Over night at Rev. Joe Backtel. Weather very warm.

June 30 – Meeting the Elder at his Q. M. I concluded I could now return as I was not Specially needed. So I took train for Sterling, 30 cts. Dinner 20 cts. Was taken home by Mr. Jacob Wetsel. Weather very warm.

CONRAD BENDER –
Born: November 2, 1838 in Plainfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, fourth child, third son of Conrad Bender, [II] and Anna Bauer.

Baptized: December 23, 1838 at the Plainfield Reformed Church, Northamptin Co., PA.

Family moved to Stephenson County, Illinois probably in the summer of 1844. Later moves included Green County, Wisconsin, and Decorah, Winneshick County, Iowa.

Conrad moved back to Stephenson Co., IL in 1860 where he engaged in farming.

[In the Diary of 1876 he mentions attending a reunion of the 112th Infantry Regiment in Geneseo, IL on September 22, 1876.]

Converted in 1861 [Church of the United Brethren in Christ.]

Preached first sermon on November 19, 1865.

Licensed to preach by the Rock River Conference in 1866 and worked at the Harrison Mission, Stephenson Co.

Married Clarissa E. Riche of Stephenson Co. at Polo, IL on December 25, 1866. (Note: Illinois Archives show the license marriage in Ogle Co 15 Dec. 1866 #00C/2943 under the name of Richie)

Received into the “itinerancy” in October, 1867.

Ordained October 23, 1870; member of the Rock River Conference throughout his ministry.

[Was in poor health in 1875. In the Diary as he has no church until the fall of 1876.]

[Jasper William Otterbein Bender was born May 6, 1876.]

Presiding Elder 1886 to 1895.

He was in the ministry for over forty years.

He retired c. 1905 following two light strokes.

Died July 9, 1913 in Amboy, Lee County, IL., following a stroke on July 3, 1913.

Buried July 11, 1913, Woodside Cemetery near Lee Center, IL.
