The aged Como scrap book loaned this column by Mrs. Lawrence Shontz of Como contains an interesting clipping regarding the Old Settlers’ reunion held in 1800 at which Hiram Parker of Garden Plain stated that he and C. C. Knight of Fulton celebrated the county’s first Fourth of July celebration in 1840 at Fulton by firing an anvil and eating roast pig together. Mr. Knight, who was present, confirmed the statement. The clipping also gives the names of the old settlers present and the date of their coming to Whiteside county as follows: C. S. Knapp, Garden Plain, 1854.
