Oct 10 – The Baptist Ladies’ Aid meets today with Mrs. C.G. Wright.

James Sturm went to Bedford this morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Seymour have gone to Iowa to attend a wedding. Mrs. Gene Underhill is assisting her cousin, Miss Daisy Seymour, in the store during their absence.

Mrs. George Martin of Sterling visited several days here last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Clapper.

Charley Brown is confined to the house with a broken arm. He attempted to jump from a wagon Monday while the team was going and fell. The wheel passed over the arm breaking it between the elbow and wrist.

Mr. and Mrs. Willard Lutes accompanied by Miss Edna Sturm drove to Bradford Tuesday to visit relatives.

Peter Zigler and To--- Engel have returned from Missouri. Mr. Zigler purchased a quarter section of land near Mendon.

Fred Landwair has moved from near the cemetery to the Vaughn house near the railroad.

George Needham and family of Pomona, Cal., are visiting Mrs. Needham’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Drayton. Mr. Needham brought a dead tarantula with him. It measures two and one-half inches long and its legs are the same length.

John Clapper, S.B. Freeman and Oscar Pierson accompanied Land Agent Sturm to Mendon, Missouri last Tuesday to look at land. They returned Saturday. We understand they did not purchase.

The Athenae club held its regular meeting Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. F.A. Brewer.

A daughter was born a week ago Sunday night to Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Evitta. A son was born Monday night to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nelson. A son was born Thursday night to Mr. and Mrs. John Linder.

Wirth Brothers have nearly completed their new green house at their nursery north of town. The green house is 14x30 in size. It will be heated by hot water.

Harris and Irvine will erect a new barn on the Bogart farm five miles west of town.

Miss Mina Lyon visited her sister, Mrs. Roy Olmstead in Prophetstown last week.

Mr. Newton Denison and Miss Nevt Jones both prominent young people of this place were united in marriage last Wednesday afternoon in Morrison. The ceremony was performed at the Baptist parsonage by Rev. Jeffries. Mrs. Denison is the daughter of Mrs. J.S. Kimball. Mr. and Mrs. Denison are both graduates of the Tampico public schools. Mr. Denison is a member of the Tampico band whose members serenaded him and presented the couple with a handsome clock.

E.C. Brown of Tampico, who has been a guest of his son, H.E. Brown of Sterling for several days, left Monday for Los Angeles, Cal., going by the way of the Southern Pacific. He will visit in Los Angeles for about three months.

A coming wedding -- Invitations are out for the wedding of Miss Georgia LaDue and Ralph Glassburn which will come on Wednesday, October 4th at noon at the residence of the bride's parents, south of town. Both of the young people are well and favorably known here and are members of two prominent families. Friends extend congratulations over the coming happy event. Tampico Youth Missing Since October 23rd -- J.W. Yarde of Tampico received a telegram Tuesday morning reporting that his son, Private Archie A. Yarde, Co. M. 354th Inf., serving as a machine gunner somewhere in France, has been missing since Oct. 23 and cannot be located in any of the camps. The last letter received from him was dated Oct. 4th and stated that he had just returned to a rest camp after sixty days at the front, and it is supposed that he returned to the front. As he was necessarily in an exposed position it is thought likely that he may have been captured and strong hopes are entertained that he will soon be found in good health.

Make Financial Statement -The financial statement, which is compiled and printed each year by St. Mary’s church has just been issued and is a very neat piece of work. The statement contains all expenditures and contributions and is compiled by Father L.X. DuFour.

All Spic and Span - Several of the volunteer firemen with the aid of several other citizens cleaned the brass fire truck and polished the brass so that it makes a very neat appearance now.

Mrs. H.A. Terry is on the sick list.

Donald Drayton, of Thomas, was a Saturday visitor here.

Mrs. Lovina Booth, was a Saturday afternoon passenger to Erie for a visit with relatives.

Arthur Barrett, of near Fenton, is spending a short visit with friends and relatives here.

Miss Nathalie Emmons, of Prophetstown, was a Tampico visitor on Thursday.

New Arrival - Word has been received here by relatives that a baby son was born to Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Trump, of Horseheads, New York on March 3. Mrs. Trump is a former Tampico resident and is well known here.

The marriage of Miss Ruth Maxwell and Delbert Sanders, popular Tampico couple, took place at 5:30 o’clock Friday afternoon in Clinton, Ia., at the parsonage of the Methodist church. Rev. W. T. Smith officiated. A wedding dinner was served in the home of the groom’s sister, Mrs. William Burns of Albany, Friday evening. The couple have returned to Tampico where they will reside. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Ida Harrington of Tampico, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Sanders of Albany. He is employed at the J. H. Hellier store in Tampico. J.H. Daley has received word from Representative John P. Devine of Dixon that Kathryn Graham has been awarded a 4 year scholarship at the University of IL. Kathryn was the valedictorian of the senior class of the Tampico HS this spring and will enter the university in the fall. She is the daughter of Mrs. Gertrude Graham and the youngest of three sisters, all of whom held scholarships during their entire university courses and graduated with high honors. Mrs. Graham is to be congratulated upon the distinguishd rcord her daughters have made in High school and at the University of IL.

Mr. and Mrs. Jake Schneider and Lizzie Wood of Sterling called at the Mary Wood home Tuesday eveing. They were accompanied home by Beverly Van DeMark, who has been visiting at the Wood home.

Mrs. Art McKenney went to Sublette Wednesday morning where she underwent a minor operation at the hospital.

Mrs. Mary Backlund spent Tuesday in Morrison

Mrs. Mack Parent went to Clinton Tuesday where she played in the golf tournament held there. She played with the Morrison team which with the Rock River club of Sterling and the Dixon Country Cluf were entertained by the members of the Clinton Club.

Dorris Nelson, R.N. of the Jane Lamb hospital at CLinton IA spent Wednesday night at the R.F. Nelson home.

A.E. Bennett and Ry Brown went to Morrison Tuesday evening and attended a meeting of the Whiteside County Bankers Association.

Geraldine Pierce is much improved, after a recent accident at which time she cut both arms quite badly.

Dorris and Mildred Rosene, Bernadene Foy and Henrietta and Lawrence Bruder spent Wednesday in Kewanee. Lawrence, who has been suffering from blood poisoning in his hand, consulted a physician.

Word has been received that Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Cain and son Fred left Tuesday for home, after visiting at the home of Mr.a nd Mrs. Mason Hein and son Clyde at Hyattsville MD.

Mr. and Mrs. John Darby and daughter Marienne of Springfield are visiting with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Darby.

Mrs. W.W. Wangler and son Bobbie returned home Tuesday evening from a visit at LaGrange.

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Lutyens of Kansas City are visiting this week at the Levi Lutyens home.

Monday was class day for the members of the senior class and their advisor, Miss Verna Gruett. they enjoyed a trip to Davenport, Ia., where they visited the arsenal, ate a delicious picnic dinner at Feduary park, and in the afternoon went on a tour of the city. Members of the class who enjoyed the outing were Arlene Eshelman, Edna and Evelyn Dronenberg, Esther Mae Wetsell, Ethel Schneider, John Love, Arlyn Pratt, Pete Burke, Cecil Peterson, Keith Wheelock, Arthur Davis, Henry Neilsen, Marvin Winans, Leonard Hard, Robert Wood, Vernon Rassmussen, LeRoy Thomas, Harold Stewart, and Mervyn Graham. Vernon Peterson accompanied the class and kindly furnished a car for conveyance.

Miss Violett Scherer of Washington is making an extended visit in the home of her friend, Anita Bane.

Mrs. Francis Dealer and C. Givens of Fenton, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Mott of La Moille and John Green and Gerald Percapile of Rock Falls were dinner guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Ewers Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Len Sprinkle and son Lowell of Walnut were callers in the home of Mrs. Anna Simkins Sunday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs Lyle Simkins and daughters Patricia Ann and Marilyn Jean, and Miss June Simkins of DeKalb were entertained at dinner in the home of Lyle’s and June’s mother, Mrs. Anna Sinkims, Sunday, Miss June, who had been attending school at DeKalb for the past year, remained in Tampico and will spend her summer vacation in the home of her mother.

Roy Brown of Aurora spent the weekend with his family, Mrs. Brown and daughter Parry Ann, in Tampico.

Leo Schneider of Sterling attended the eighth greade graduation exercises at the high school Monday evening. His sister, Edith Schneider was a member of the class

A pot luck dinner was served Sunday in the home of Mr. and mrs. Frank Taylor of Tampico in honor of the 30th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor which occurred Tuesday and the 6th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Rasmussen which is Jan. 26. Thos present were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brasel of Cambridge, Mr. and mrs. Jesse Brasel and family, MR. and mrs. Raymond Kemptine and son Phillip and Mr. and mrs. Harold Ouart of Kewanee and mr. and mrs. Leonard Rasmussen and family and Mr. and Mrs. Nim Gosney of Tampico. Rev. Fr. T.O. Maguire was an afternoon caller. Mr and Mrs Taylor were presented with a bouquet of cut flowers, a gift from the group.

Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Anderson and son Harold enertained the following neighbors at a social evening in their home near Tampico Saturday; Mr. and Mrs. Sivard Pierson and family, Mr. and mrs Otto Munson and family, Mr. and mrs. Charles Lindquist and sons Arthur and Elvin, Mr.a nd Ms. B.F.jones and ronald Resburg. The time was spent playing pinochle, bingo and visiting.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fullerton of Tampico entertained the following at a pinochle party Saturday evening: Mr. and Mrs. Glen Schutt, the Ralph Hollmans, Mr. and Mrs. N.H. Hand of Hume adn mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gilman and the Paul Manon's of Rock Falls. The prizes for high score were award to Mr. and Mrs. Manon and Mr. and mrs. Gilman received the consolation prize.

Mr. and Mrs. Lourde Renner and daughter LaFerne and son Bobbie Gene and Miss Garnett Cantrell visited with Mr. and mrs. W.E. Jones and family at Genesee Sunday.

Mrs. Ida Warrick and daughter Blanche and Henry Newcomer of Ottawa visited Saturday with Mrs. Laura Larson. Mrs. Larson accompanied Mrs. Warrick and daughter to Ottawa to visit for a week and Mr. Newcomer remained in the Larson home.

Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Vickrey visited over the weenend with relatives in Akron Ind.

Miss Marian Glassburn, who has been a patient in the Home hospital for the past week and a half, is much improved and will be able to leave within a few days.

Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Gillette and Mrs. mary Sturm spent Sunday in Marseilles with Mr. Gillett's sister, Mrs. Edith Parr.

Mrs. Lourde Renner, Miss Garnet Cantrell and Miss Ferne Hein were business visitors in Sterling Saturday afternoon.

A farewell party was given for the Russell Near family near Tampico Saturday night. There was a large group to enjoy the games of pitch and dancing. Music was furnished by the three Hines brothers and lunch was served. A culvert at the intersection of the roads near the warren Newman farm west of Tampico was washed out early Monday morning by the heavy rainfall. Because the road was impassable, Miss gladys McGrath, teacher of the Pleasant Hill school southwest of town, was unable to get to the school in the morning and classes were dismissed for the day, but were resumed Tuesday.

Gordon Teach of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Emery Palmer of Freeport were weekend guests in the home of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Teach and son Jack.

Mason Steadman, who submitted to an appendectomy at the Dixon hospital recently, is getting along nicely and was able to return home Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. James Holland have moved into the residence owned by Mrs. Mary Foy which was recently vacated by Mr. and mrs. Walter Eager.

Miss Dorothy Sibley returned to Waterloo, Ia., Sunday after visiting for several days with her parents MR. and Mrs. Frank Sibley and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Adams and son Jerry of Sterling spent the weekend in the home of Mr. and mrs. Gust Johnson and family. James Wetzell was an added guest Sunday.

John McKenzie and Mr. and Mrs. Frank McKenzie have gone to Denver, Colo., where Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie will make their home.

LeRoy Stewart, who recently submitted to an appendectomy in the Sterling public hospital, continues to improve.

Mrs. Kate Vaughn, who has been ill for several days is improving.

Mrs.Horace Avery is spending a few days in Erie in the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Avery.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Garland were honored at a miscellaneous shower at the Legion Hall Tuesday evening. The time was spent playing bunco with Mrs. R. L. Teach receiving the high prize and Donald Glassburn the low. The hall was decorated in pink and blue, the bride's chosen colors. Streamers of crepe paper extended from the lights to the ceiling and to the corner of one long table on which the gifts had been placed. The table was also decorated in pink and blue. A white wedding bell was suspended over the center of the room. A two-tier wedding cake beautifully decorated and topped with a minature bride and groom was placed on a small table with pink candles in pink holders on either side. This table was decorated in pink, blue and white. Garden flowers completed the decorations. The young couple received a large number of beautiful gifts and each responded with words of appreciation. At a late hour a lunch of sandwiches, pickles, cake, ice cream and coffee was served. Those present besides the honorees were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gallentine, Mr. and Mrs. Orland Gloden, Walnut; Misses Vida Glassburn and Anne Graber, Sterling; Ralph Glassburn, Mrs. Mary Glassburn, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. The recent marriage of Miss Harriette Glassburn, youngest daughter of R. L. Glassburn, and Gordon Garland, both of Tampico which occurred at three o'clock Monday afternoon, Sept. 23, (1940) at Davenport, Iowa, has been announced. The young couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Klobes of Davenport. The bride wore a dress of navy blue sheer fashioned coat style and wore pink accessories. Mrs. Klobes' dress was of black sheer with dark accessories. Both the bride and her attendant wore shoulder bouquets of pink and white rosebuds and babysbreath. Following the ceremony the bridal party had dinner in Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. Garland have a furnished apartment in the home of Mrs. Mary Glassburn, the bride's grandmother. Mr. Garland is employed in Hurd's tavern. The young people are receiving the best wishes and congratulations of their friends.

Five ladies surprised Mrs. Anna Simpkins on Friday afternoon for a farewell party. Mrs. Simpkins will leav Saturday evening for her home in Tampcio, having spent the winter with Mrs. Oliver Beckler (Walnut IL). A social afternoon was followed by a delicious scramble lunch. Those present were Mesdames William Keithahan, Kelly Odell, L.C. Sprinkle, Thursa Sanders and Olaf Christenson.

Howard Johnson 19, son of Mr. & Mrs. Fred E.Johnson of Tampico which occured at Shreveport LA where he was hit and instantly killed by a Shreveport city bus Friday night (9 May 1947. He has been stationed at Barksdale field near Shreveport for the past several months.

J.E. Strouss, father of Gene Strouss, Amboy, was brought to Amboy Hospital last Thursday from St.Mary's Hospital, Rochester Minn. While her husband is a patient in the hospital, Mrs. Strouss is staying with her son and family, Mr.and Mrs. Gene Strouss. The J.E. Strouss' are from Tampico.

Mrs. Quincy Adams entertained at her home "Oaklane" with a buffet supper for 16 guests recently. The Party honored Miss Margie McCormick of Tampico whose marriage to Al A. Stevens will occur June 2 at Tampico. Tulips, wild flowers and spring blossoms from the gardens at Oaklane decorated the home. A bridal arrangements of pink snapdragons, tulle and ribbon tied in lovers knots centered the table. Guests were from Tampico, Polo, Mt. Carroll, Sterling and Rock Falls.

Mr. T.E. Erickson and Mrs. F.O. Gerber and Joyce, Julia Bachman, Esther Peterson and Mark Nicholson attended the Arispie School Reunion at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Jackson near Ohio on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Wade Glassburn adn family of Syracuse, New York, called on Mrs. Grace Glassburn on Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Rosene, Chilbia, Jill Ann, Jeffrey and Tamara spent last week with Mr.a nd Mrs. Phillip York and Brian, also visited in the home of Mr.a nd Mrs. Roland Rosene and family of Indianapolis, Ind.
