WILLIAM BEALER of Fenton township, who was fearfully injured in a runaway accident and died from the effect of his injuries and was buried Sunday. Mr. Bealer was about forty five years of age and has resided in Fenton township the greater part of his life. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his death. The accident, resulting in death, with the surrounding circumstances are pitiful. The pain that Mr. Bealer suffered before he was found was almost unbearable. He laid on the frozen highway with the muscles of his leg pulled and broken and the joint pulled apart at the knee for over six hours before he was found. As near as can be learned, the runaway accident occured at midnight, and he was not found until 7 o'clock the next morning. Mr Bealer had been to Morrison and left for home late Monday night. When within a mile of his home, the team became frightened and ran away. They were unmanagable and he was thrown from the buggy. In falling his right leg caught between the spokes of the wheel and was held in a vise. At a terrific speed the horses dashed homeward and Mr. Bealer was whirled through the air by the almost irrestible force. The man's body was pounded on the ground with every revolution of the wheel which twisted and tore the muscles and tendons and disjointed the leg at the knee. How long the unfortunate man was thus cruelly beaten he could not tell. With the breaking of the leg and tearing the muscles, there was suffucient relaxation that allowed his foot to slip from between the spokes and he fell to the ground and rolled for almost a rod.

ADALIZA (HURD) BOOTH - At her home in Prophetstown, on Monday October 22, 1894, Mrs. Wm. A. Booth, aged 62 years, 11 months and 16 days.

Adaliza Hurd was born in Vermont , Nov. 6, 1831 and came to Portland township, Whiteside county Ill., with her parents in 1838. She was married June 17, 1850, to William A. Booth, who with five children mourn the loss of wife and mother. For six months her health has been poor but she was only confined to her bed for three weeks preceeding her death. The funeral services were held on Tuesday, internment taking place in the Leon cemetery.

ASHLEY BOOTH - The subject of this brief sketch was born in Freetown, Mass. 17 Jan. 1806, and died in Portland, Whiteside Co., Ill. on August 22, 1885, aged 79 years and seven months. His parents moved to New York State where he resided with them until 1836. In 1833 Mr. Booth came to Illinois, first making a claim near where the village of Portland is now located, and in 1837 brought his family to his new home, living for a time in a rail cabin covered with boughs of trees. In 1844 he owned a farm at Woodward's Bluff in Prophetstown township, upon which he resided until 1878, a period of 34 years except for a couple years which he spent in the Pike's Peak gold diggings. Since 1878 he has been a resident of Portland.

He was twice married, in 1830 to Miss Mary Foy, who died in 1872, and subsequently to Mrs. Fanny Winters, who still survives him.

He was a spiritualist in belief and died firm to the knowledge of that principle, being ready and willing to join the loved ones gone before, and who were manifest around him. Short services over the remains were held at the residence of the deceased, after which they were taken to the Leon Cemetery for interment. Rev. A. B. Meder delivering the funeral discourse in the Leon Church.

PHEBE AURELIA (FULLER) BOOTH - On Saturday morning the remains of Mrs. Aurelia Booth arrived in this place (Prophetstown) from Shannon, accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. S. N. (Addie) Langdon and other relatives. Mrs. Langdon went to Shannon with the intention of bringing her mother to Prophetstown to care for her, but before she arrived the mother had taken a turn for the worse and passed away about twenty minutes previous to her arrival.

Aurelia Fuller Booth was born Dec 13, 1823 in Western Oneida Co., N.Y. and died in Shannon Jan 12, 1911. Mrs. Booth was married Feb 13, 1843, and lived in Cattaraugus Co. N.Y. until Jan 1866, when she with the family moved to Whiteside Co., settling about five miles south of Prophetstown where they lived until Dec 15 1886, when she moved to Shannon. Her husband preceded her in death in 1881.

Mrs. Booth was the mother of seven children, two of whom died in childhood, one, Edward Fuller Booth, died Aug 6, 1888. Those who survive her of the children are Howard of Erie, Alfred of Morrison, Wesley of Chicago and Mrs. S. N. (Addie A.) Langdon of Prophetstown. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Mrs. Booth was brought up in a Christian home and early in her life expoused the cause of religion and was steadfast adherent to the cause all her life. She never was so happy as when in the work of her Master. Thirteen years previous to her death she was stricken with paralysis while teaching her Sunday School class. She had been a sufferer for several years previous to her death but died in peace.

The funeral was held in the M.E. Church, Prophetstown, Sunday at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. F. P. McNamera conducting the service. After the service here, the remains were taken to Sandytown for burial. The pall bearers were Charles Sibley, Truman Sibley, William McNeill, Wesley Graham, Samuel Chapin and Robert Besse, all of them old neighbors and early friends of Mrs. Booth. Those in attendance from out of town were, W. W. Booth of Chicago, A.D. Booth and wife of Morrison, I.D Woodford and wife of Morrison, H.A. Booth of Erie, and Miss Jennie Booth of Shannon.

VIOLA (SOLLARS) BOOTH - died at her home in Leon, after a brief illness, Saturday, January 7. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Sollars. The deceased was but a little more than twenty years of age. She leaves a husband and infant son, father, mother, two brother and one sister. The funeral was held in the Leon church last Monday being conducted by Rev. Seger of New Bedford.

WILLIAM BOOTH - The residence of Wm. Booth, near Sandytown schoolhouse, in the township of Portland, has been one of sorrow during the past few days. On Friday evening, Dec 9, as Mr. Booth was about to feed a young horse, the animal struck him with its fore feet, felling him to the floor, and not being satisfied with this, continued to strike until it had broken his upper and lower jaws, fractured several of his ribs and driven one of the broken ribs through the left side into the lung.

When found he was in an insensible condition and remained so for some length of time. Drs. Mosher, of this place, and Anthony, of Sterling, consulted on Saturday, the day following the accident, and seem to think that there is barely a hope for recovery.

Whiteside Sentinel 15 December 1881 Website of Lucinda Murdock

Wm. Booth, the party spoken of in the last issue of the Sentinel, who was so badly mutilated by a horse, died at his farm residence in Sandytown on Friday, Dec 16th at 7:30 pm. Mr. Booth was nearly 68 years of age at the time of his death, and leaves behind him five brothers, five children, and a loving and ever affectionate wife, to mourn his seemingly untimely death.

The funeral was held on Saturday, Dec 17th, and was attended by his many friends and neighbors, who can only speak kind words for their companion for upwards of twenty years. Mr. Booth was born in the township of Caroline, in Tompkins County, N.Y. in 1809, and was married to Miss Aurelia Fuller in the year 1842. In 1866 they removed to this state and located on the farm he occupied at the time of his death.

The services were conducted by the Rev. R. Linee, pastor of the Erie M.E. Church. Bolen Lodge No. 412 assisted by Prophetstown Lodge No. 293, A.F & A.M. conducted the ceremony at the gravesite at Sandytown Cemetery. Mr. Booth was, since Monday of Last week, conscious of all that had taken place and realized that his days were numbered and that he would soon be called away. Still he expressed a desire to go and felt that it was for the best.

ANNA (COLCORD) BURGESS , The final summons that comes to us all has called to rest another esteemed and devoted christian woman, Mrs. Anna Colcord Burgess. She was born in Bath, Fulton County, N. Y., April 5, 1835. She was one of a family of thirteen children, of which only three now survive, Mrs. James DeGroff of Sterling; Mrs. Angeline Terpny [sic] of Morrison, and Ivory Colcord of Battle Creek, Mich. She came with her parents to Illinois in October, 1837. They shipped on a flatboat from Olean Point, N. Y., going down the Alleghany river to Pittsburgh, thence down the Ohio to the Mississippi, and up this noble stream to Fulton, then Baker’s Ferry, Ill. From here they journeyed by wagon and teams furnished by Mr. Baker, who also acted as driver and guide. They crossed prairies and sloughs till they came to Genesee Grove. The whole trip consumed six weeks. Mr. Colcord bought of Wm. Wick a claim, 200 acres of timber and 300 acres of prairie, for $150 in gold. Here he first built a 12x12 cabin, but the following summer erected a larger and more comfortable house for his family. Mrs. Burgess has lived in Whiteside County ever since. She married Caleb Burgess on April 30, 1855, and became the mother of four children, of whom the oldest daughter and the youngest son have passed on before, and the ones surviving the oldest daughter and the and the ones surviving are, Mrs. Frank Stabler of Sterling, and Mr. Warren Burgess of Tacoma, Washington, who has been here since July 4th, to assist in caring for the mother. She also leaves six grandchildren, Della, Emma, Earnest and William Stabler, and Edna and Howell Burgess. After her marriage she went with her husband to the farm in Genesee township that he had purchased in 1853 from the government. It is interesting to know that this couple was the only surviving one, so far as is known, that held the original patent issued by the government, there being no mortgage nor transfer on record against this farm. This farm was her home until 1874 when the family moved to Sterling and lived here continuously since that time. When yet a young girl she became a member of the M. E. church.

On June 27, 1875, she with her daughter, Florence (Mrs. Stabler), during the meeting held by Knowles Shaw, of Indiana, united with the Christian church in Sterling. Her husband united with the church about a month later. Her demise leaves Mrs. Stabler, the oldest surviving resident member of this church. She was always an active and interested member and faithful supporter of the work of the church. She often spoke with pleasure of her attendance and interest in the work. The present pastor has at every visit, until the last few weeks of serious illness, always been asked about the status of the work at present, indicating her interest retained until the last. Her many relatives and friends will miss this devoted and helpful mother and christian neighbor. Her summons to a better land came at 3:35, July 26, making her age, 78 years, 3 months and 21 days. Beside those present, a grandson, Earnest Stabler, is the only out of town relative expected to attend the funeral. The sympathy and condolence of the community will go to the berift husband and children and grandchildren because of their great loss. The funeral services will be held Monday [07/28/1913] afternoon at 2:30 at the home by Rev. Chas. A. Stevens and interment will be in Riverside cemetery.

Funeral Notice: The funeral of Mrs. Rose Anna Colcord Burgess were conducted yesterday afternoon at 2:30, at the family residence, 201 5th avenue, Rev. Chas. A. Stevens of the Christian church officiating. A ladies’ quartette, the Misses Ellmaker and Stanley, Mrs. Hendricks and Mrs. Stevens sang, “Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown.” Rev. Stevens read encouraging extracts from I Thess. and Revelation and offered prayer. The quartette then sang two verses of “Beautiful Isle.” The music was beautifully rendered. Rev. Stevens spoke of the firm foundation of our faith and hope as given in the scriptures and in the life of Jesus. He then called attention to certain acts as indicative of the deeper things of the soul, despite many visible imperfections, impressing the thought by several apt illustrations. In closing he urged the imitation of a Godly, fruitful christian life. The quartette sang the concluding verse of “Beautiful Isle.” At Riverside cemetery Rev. Stevens sang two verses of “Dear is the spot where christians sleep,” and pronounced the benediction. A large number of neighbors and friends were present at the funeral.

MARY (O'CONNOR) BURGESS , died very suddenly this morning between 2 and 4 o’clock at her home in the Pratt addition to Rock Falls. She had been quite well and at 2 o’clock, talked with her husband who had been up to look after the fire in the heating stove. When he awoke at about 4 o’clock his wife was rigid in death. It is supposed that the cause of her death was fatty degeneration of the heart. Mary O’Connor was born in Cary, Ireland, about forty-five years ago. She came to this country when she was sixteen years old and settled with her family in Detroit, Mich. Later she moved to Chicago, where she was married to George Burgess in May, 1884. Their children are, Joseph, Nellie, Edith, Charles, May, Margaret, who remain with the grief-stricken husband to mourn her death. Her parents are both dead, the father having passed away about a year ago. Two brothers and three sisters live in Chicago. They are Martin and John O’Connor, Mrs. C. Mahoney, Mrs. Dennis O’Connor and Mrs. Sarah O’Brien. Another brother Jerry O’Connor lives in Ireland. Mr. and Mrs. Burgess moved from Chicago to Savanna, Ill., and lived there until about five years ago when they came to this city. Mrs. Burgess was a Catholic and believed implicitly in the faith. She was an honest, upright, noble woman, who lived only for her family and the good that she could do. The stricken family have the sincere sympathy of their friends in their hour of sorrow (The Sterling Daily Standard, December 14, 1899)

The funeral over the remains of Mrs. J. G. Burgess was held Sunday [12/17/1899] afternoon at the Christian church. The Rev. Silas Jones officiating. The services were attended by a very large number of the sorrowing relatives and friends of the good woman. The service was brief but appropriate and the choir sang “Nearer My God to Three” [sic] “Asleep in Jesus” and “Sheltered in Thee,” the last of which had been a favorite with Mrs. Burgess and she had asked her daughters to sing it for her the evening before her death. A very large concourse of people followed the remains to the Rock Falls cemetery where they were laid tenderly to rest by the following pall bearers: Charles Rawson, Thomas Wormell, D. D. Stone, Julius Smith, A. B. Titus, E. A. Macomber
