JOHN A. BRYNING ticket agent at the Northwestern depot, and one of our best and most popular young men, accidently shot himself so severely in the left arm on Wednesday afternoon last, that it had to be amputated on Sunday evening. He had been out hunting on the cattail about four miles from town on that afternoon, in company with Mr. Merrill Buckley, and as the two were about to return home and had got as far as the bridge over the county ditch, Mr. Bryning's gun accidently discharged, the contents entering his arm just below the elbow, tearing out a portion of the flesh and rupturing the main artery. His side was also considerably lacerated. Mr. Buckley was standing so near him that he felt the shock of the discharge as it passed his head, and immediately turning saw that Mr. Bryning's coat was torn. Instantly divining that something was wrong, he asked Mr. Bryning if he was shot, and getting a reply that he was he quickly removed Mr. Bryning's coat and vest, and as he did so a great gush of blood spouted from the latter's arm. With a forethought that but very few would have under such circumstances, he at once took Mr. Bryning's suspenders and bound them tightly around the arm just above the wound, and thus stopped the flow of blood and saved his life. With considerable difficulty he then took Mr. Bryning to the carriage in which they had gone to the hunting grounds, and brought him to the residence of his father, Dr. S. G. Bryning, of this city. Dr. C. A. Griswold and Dr. S. E. Seeley were immediately called, and dressed the wounds. At first it was thought that Mr. Bryning would recover without the loss of his arm, but if finally began to mortify and amputation became necessary. This was successfully performed on Sunday evening by Drs. Griswold and Seeley, and every indication now shows that Mr. Bryning will soon recover. The hope of the whole community is that this will be the case. [Mr. Bryning died yesterday about noon.] (Whiteside Sentinel Morrison, IL Th, 14 Oct 1880 From Fulton) The funeral of John A. Bryning, on Friday forenoon of last week, was more largely attended than any held in this city since that of Mr. John Hudson who was shot by burglars in the spring of 1879. Mr. Bryning was universally esteemed.

HUGH WILKES BUNN - Word has been received here of the death of H.W. Bunn, formerly of Sterling, who passed away Wednesday evening at 6:30 o clock, at his home in Rockford. Mr. Bunn was 87 years of age. He had been in ill health for the past two years or more but his condition became critical only a few days ago. The funeral will be Saturday, and the body will be brought here for burial in the family lot in Riverside cemetery. Interment services only will be held here Saturday afternoon, the hour to be announced later. For 20 years Mr. Bunn, known familiarly to old friends as Wilkes Bunn, was in the grocery business in Sterling and in 1891 he moved to Rockford where he established a grocery store at state and Church streets, which he operated for a number of years. He then was associated with his brother-in law, the late F.H. Tillson, in the wholesale grocery business until 1919 when he retired. Hugh Wilkes Bunn was born in Chester County, Pa.., Feb. 18, 1848 and came to Sterling in 1871 in company with his brother, the late Dr. Bunn, long a prominent physician of this city. He was married in 1883 to Miss Siley M. Hubbard of Sterling, who survives. He also leaves a daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Lewis Stocking of Rockford, and two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Lewis W. Stocking. Mr. Bunn was a member of East lodge, No. 166 A.F. and A. M. and was a charter member of Tebala Shrine temple in Rockford and until his retirement he was a member of the Rockford Rotary club. He was an active member of the Second Congregational church during all the years he lived in Rockford. Though long associated with the business and social life of Rockford, where he was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends, Mr. Bunn kept in close touch with old friends in Sterling. The family home at 232 Guard Street has long been a loadstone for many Sterling visitors and Mr. Bunn and his family never failed to visit Sterling several times a year. He was a man of high character and pleasing personality and his passing will bring sorrow to all who knew him.

SILEY M. (HUBBARD) BUNN , widow of H. Wilkes Bunn for many years a resident of Sterling, passed away at 10:30 o’clock Wednesday morning, May 27, at her home in Rockford, after an extended illness. While it was known that her condition was serious, word of her death comes nevertheless as a shock to her many friends in this community. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. John Gordon, pastor of the Rockford Congregational church, Friday afternoon at one o’clock, in the family home, 232 Guard street in Rockford, and the cortege will start immediately after the service for Sterling, where interment will be made in the family lot in Riverside cemetery. It is thought that the funeral party will reach Sterling probably a few minutes before 3 p.m. Siley M. Hubbard, daughter of Ferdinand B. and Mary Dorchester Hubbard, was born in Ohio Dec. 14, 1853. The family moved to Illinois and established their home in Sterling when she was three years of age and here she lived until she was nearly 40 years of age. She was united in marriage to H.W. Bunn, Sept. 21, 1883. Mr. Bunn was engaged in the grocery business here for many years and moved to Rockford in 1891, where he continued in the same business, and eventually conducted one of the well known Rockford wholesale grocery houses. He passed away Feb. 27, 1935, just 15 months to the day before Mrs. Bunn. One daughter, Elizabeth, wife of L.C. Stocking of Rockford survives. She also leaves two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Stocking of Rockford, and Lewis W. Stocking, now a cadet in the United States Military academy at West Point; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Tillson of Columbia, Mo. and Mrs. Lena Clarke of Oakland, Calif.; one niece, Mrs. Marion Silkett of Columbia, Mo. and one nephew, Herbert D. Anning of Los Angeles, Calif., all of whom are well known in Sterling. Mrs. Bunn is remembered by her old friends in Sterling as a lady of delightful personality, and during her many years in this city she was a general favorite in the social circle in which she moved. While she was active in affairs in Rockford, where she was a member of the Congregational church during all the time she lived there, she never lost her attachment for Sterling and her visits here and calls made at her home by Sterling friends were always bright spots in her life. During her long illness she expressed the hope many times that she would be able to come here for Memorial day and her last wish will be fulfilled when she is brought back “home to Sterling” to rest in peace beside her husband in beautiful Riverside, where so many of her former friends have gone to their eternal rest before her.

LUTHER BUSH - one of the early settlers of Sterling, died at his residence in this city on Tuesday last, aged seventy-six years. Mr. Bush emigrated to Illinois in 1836 and in the spring of 1838 removed to the Rock River valley, where he has since permanently resided. He was one of the few who took upon themselves the hardships of a pioneer life, and after years of faithful toil had the satisfaction of seeing his frontier home give place to a thriving town. Mr. Bush was a man of quiet habits, one whose circle of acquaintance was somewhat limited, but he ever commanded the esteem and frienship of those with whom he came in contact. After a long life of usefulness he has passed to his reward, and sorrowing friends will ever hold his many virtues in grateful remembrance. On Thursday a large concourse of citizens including many of the old pioneers of the county, attended the funeral at the Broadway M. E. church of which denomination the deceased had been almost a life long member.
