EDWARD DEVINE
: was born in Vermont, Aug. 21, 1852, and died Wednesday evening, Sept. 7, aged 80 years and 17 days. He was the oldest of five children of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Devine, who moved from Vermont to Galt early in 1855. Afterwards the family moved to a farm in Hahnaman. Edward Devine attended the country schools and later the old Second ward school in Sterling and taught the Advanced school several terms.
On Nov. 5, 1876, he married Hannah A. Davis, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R. Davis. The newlywed couple took up their residence on a farm and lived on their various farms until moving to Sterling in 1920, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Devine Jan 2, 1928. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Devine. Mary and Joseph dying in infancy, while eight survive to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate father. The are John J. of Chicago, Mrs. Ed Cunningham of Deer Grove, William of Deer Grove, Fred of Sterling, Mrs. John J. Schauff of Rock Falls, Lester and Lyle of Rock Falls, and Reuben of Deer Grove. There are also 23 grand children and one great grandchild. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. John Conlon of Sterling and two brothers, John of Deer Grove and James of Chicago. The other sister, Mrs. Mary Potts of Iowa, died last November.
Mr. Devine suffered a severe stroke of paralysis May 25 and his health gradually failed. Though he realized he could not regain his good health, he was patient and uncomplaning and greeted everyone with a smile during his long illness. He was well and favorably known through the county and had many friends who will deeply regret his passing. The best testimony of his efficiency that his friends could offer was their electing him as supervisor for 24 years and to Springfield as representative. Mr. Devine was always active in civic affairs and interested in any improvments for the betterment of living. His many friends and relatives will remember him for his pleasant word, kindly smile, and cheery wave of the hand for all.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Schauff, to St. Mary Church in Sterling, where mass was read by Rev. Fr. McGuire of Tampico. The casket was tenderly and lovingly born by six grandsons, Leo Devine, Edward Cunningham, Edward Devine, Hilary Devine, Lawrence Schauff and Barry Devine, followed by a large concourse of friends. Interment was in Riverside beside his wife.
FRED ELMER DEVINE
- Funeral rites for Fred Devine were held Monday morning at 8:30 int the Trouthe Funeral Home and none o'clock in St. Mary Catholic Church the Rev. Leo Ambrose officiated and burial was made in Calvary Cemetery.
Paul bearers were Ervin Henry and Keith, Erwin, Roland, Eugene and Leo Devine. Fred Devine was born March 29, 1885 in Hahnaman Township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Devine. He was united in marriage with Myrtle Waldhalm Sept28, 1912 in Tintah, Minn. Mr. Devine had spent most of his life in Sterling and was in the house construction business for many years. His wife preceded him in death in 1953.
Mr. Devine is survived by two sons and two daughters: Hilary, James and Mrs. Lucy Wells of Sterling and Mrs. Letty Buchanan of Waggoner, Ill; six grandchildren and five brothers, Lyle, Lester, and Will Devine of Deer Grove, Reuben Devine of Rock Falls, and John Devine of Chicago. Besides his wife and parents Mr. Devine was preceded in death by a son, Jerry, who was killed in action in World War II, two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Schauff and Mrs. Grace Cunningham and a brother and a sister in infancy.
Mr. Devine had been in poor health for two years and was admitted to Community General Hospital 10 days before his death on April 18.
HANNAH (DAVIS) DEVINE
, beloved wife of Edward Devine passed away Monday evening, Jan. 2, at 4:30 o'clock, at her home, 709 Broadway, following a sickness with a complication of diseases that began last March.
Funeral services will be held at the family home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock and burial will be in the Riverside cemetery. Friends are requested to omit flowers.
Mrs. Devine is survived by six sons and two daughters, as follows: John J. Devine of Chicago; Mrs. Grace E. Cunningham of Deer Grove, Mrs. Jessie E. Schauff of Rock Falls, William E. Devine of Deer Grove, Fred E. Devine of Sterling, Lester E. and Lyle Devine of Rock Falls, and Reuben Devine of Deer Grove.
IRENE (ERWIN) DEVINE
, 76, of 207 E. 9th St., Rock Falls, died early Thursday morning (7 Sep 1972) in Community General Hospital.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Wheelock-Allen Funeral home for a prayer and requiem mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Tampico. The Rev. Eugene Parker will officiate with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Tampico. Friends may call at the Wheelock-Allen Funeral home in Rock Falls from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. A rosary will be held Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Devine was born June 8, 1896, in Amboy, the daughter of William and Irene Schultz Erwin. She was united in marriage to James LeRoy Devine, April 19, 1919. He preceded her in death in 1960.
Mrs. Devine is survived by two sons, John L. Devine of Sterling and Thomas R. Devine of Rock Falls; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Cathrine) Roush and Mrs. Bernice Roush of Rock Falls and Mrs. Leon (Shirley) Neese of Sterling; 13 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother and five sisters. She is preceded by her husband, her parents, two sons, one brother and one grandson.
JAMES LEROY DEVINE
, 71, died Sunday morning in his home. He had been in failing health for some time.
The body was taken to the Parent Funeral Chapel, where friends may call. The rosary will be recited in the chapel at 8 p.m. this evening. Funeral services will be conducted in St. Mary'cChurch in Tampico Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., the Rev. Robert Devine will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Tampico.
He was born May 13, 1889 in Deer Grove, the son of John and Catherine Devine. He was reared and educated in the Deer Grove community. He married Anna Schultz of Chicago, on April 19, 1920..They made their home in Deer Grove until 19 years ago when they moved to Tampico. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tampico.
Survivors are four sons, John, James, Rock Falls; William, Thomas, Tampcio; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Catherine) Rousch, Mrs. Bernard (Bernice) Roush, Tampico; Shirley, at home; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Frank, Erwin and Rolland, all of Sterling; one sister, Mrs. Richard (Mae) Burden, Clinton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.
JOHN L. DEVINE
, 68, of 209 E. 5th St., died Thursday at St. Anthony's Medical Center, Rockford. Prayer services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sterling, with Rev. Daniel Peters officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Tampico. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today with a wake service at 7 p.m. at the Grennan Funeral Home, Sterling. A memorial has been established.
Mr. Devine was born Sept. 29, 1922 in Hahnaman Township, the son of James and Anna Irene (Schultz) Devine. He married Betty Jean Roush June 24, 1950 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Tampico. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sterling. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was employed at Northwestern Steel & Wire, retiring in 1983.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Linda) Williams, Sterling; two sons, Mike, Rock Falls, and David, Sterling; two sisters, Mrs Roger (Catherine) Roush and Mrs. Leon (Shirley) Neese, both of Sterling; one brother, Tom, Rock Falls; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one child in infancy.
LESTER E. DEVINE
, 79 Deer Grove, Route One, died early today (11 Sep 1972) in his home after a lengthy illness.
Funeral rites will be held Wednesday morning with a 9:15 prayer service in the Grennan and Son Funeral Home and requiem mass at 10 o'clock in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Tampico. The Rev. Eugene Parker will officiate and burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Tampico.
There will be visitation from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home and a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m
Lester E. Devine was born in Hahnaman Township Jan. 4, 1893, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward (Hannah Davis) Devine. He was united in marriage with Caroline Hein Feb. 4, 1920 in St. Mary's Church, Tampico by the Rev. L. X. Dufour. He had farmed his entire lifetime in the Deer Grove area. Mr. and Mrs. Devine observed their golden wedding Feb. 4, 1970.
Surviving with Mrs. Devine are one son, Eugene of Harmon; two brothers, Lyle of Deer Grove, and Reuben of Rock Falls, and four grandchildren, Edward, Steven and Margaret Devine and Mrs. Diane Wade. Three brothers and two sisters preceded in death.
LLOYD DEVINE
, 38, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Devine of 502 Avenue C, passed away Sunday (09 Feb 1941) at 1 a.m. at a Peoria sanitarium, where he had been a patient for nearly two years. The body was removed from the Trouth Mortuary Sunday to the Devine residence, where the rosary will be said Monday night.
Funeral services will be at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling at 9 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Fr. John Smith in charge of the requiem. Committal will be in the family lot at St. Mary's Cemetery in Tampico. A short service for the family will be held at the home preceding the church rites.
Mr. Devine was born at Deer Grove, August 24, 1902. He received his education there and also attended Brown's Business College in Sterling. He was associated with his father in the hardware business at Deer Grove and about six years ago secured employment in Peoria, where he had since resided.
Besides his parents he is survived by five brothers and three sisters, Frank Devine, Sterling; Mrs. Richard (May) Burden, Albany; Roy Devine, Deer Grove; John Devine, Deer Grove; Mrs. Paul (Florence) Dawson, Rock Falls; E. J. Devine, Sterling; Roland Devine, Sterling; and Mrs. John (Genevieve) Dawson, Sterling.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. John (Ethel) Dawson and a sister in infancy, and a brother, Lourde Devine, who died about three years ago as a result of an accident.
LOURDE DEVINE
, succumbed Thursday morning at 6:50 at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Devine, at 502 Avenue C., as the result of a basal skull fracture received Nov. 7, when he was hit by an automobile on Route 80 near his sister's home, south of Albany. At the time of the accident Mr. Devine was taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. Richard Burden, where he was cared for 11 days, and he was then brought to the home of his parents in Sterling.
Mr. Devine never regained consciousness after the accident. At times there were strong hopes for his recovery. However, for the last few days he had been sinking rapidly. He was born in Deer Grove, Aug. 12, 1907, attended the Deer Grove school and the Tampico High School. He assisted his father in a hardware store in Deer Grove until the family moved to Sterling in 1935. He had since been employed at the wire mill. He was of a bright disposition, well liked by his friends and was interested in all athletics. The body will be returned to the home from the Forster Funeral Home Thursday night.
Besides the parents there survive the following brothers and sisters. Edward F. Devine, Sterling; Mrs. Richard Burden, Albany; LeRoy Devine, Hahnaman; John Devine, Peoria; Mrs. Paul Dawson, Rock Falls; Erwin Devine, Sterling; Roland Devine, Sterling; Lloyd Devine, Peoria, and Mrs. John Dawson, Sterling. A sister, Mrs. John (Ethel) Dawson, preceded him in death in 1920.
Saturday, being a holy day, the body will be taken to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sterling that morning at 10 o'clock where the body will be blessed and the funeral sermon given. The cortege will then proceed to Tampico where interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery,.
The requiem mass will be said at St. Mary's Church in Sterling Monday morning.
MYRTLE (WALDHALM) DEVINE
: 58, 801 West Seventh Street, Sterling died at 9 p.m. Wednesday in Community General Hospital, where she has been a patient the last nine weeks.
The body was taken to the Trouth Funeral home where friends may call. The funeral will be conducted Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home and at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church where a requiem mass will be sung. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Mrs. Devine was born Jan. 1, 1894, in Oceola, Ia., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Waldhalm. She was married Sept. 25, 1912 in Minnesota to Mr. Devine. They resided in that state until in 1925 when they moved to Sterling where they resided since.
She was a member of the St. Mary Altar and Rosary Society, and the members will recite the rosary at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Surviving are her husband, her mother, Mrs. Christina Waldhalm, Fergus Falls, Minn., two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Wells of Sterling, and Mrs. Mary Buchanan of Wagoner, Ill.; two sons, Hilary Devine of Sterling and Jame Devine, at home, four brothers and one sisters, Mopshep(sic) Waldhelm, Enderlin, N. D., Mrs. Paul Schauff, Ernest Waldhelm and Mathew Waldhalm, all of Fergus Falls.
She was preceded in death by her father, one son, Jerry, who was killed in action in 1943 in World War II, and one brother, Henry Waldhalm.
RICHARD V. DEVINE
, 45, of Kansas City, Kan formerly of Sterling, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at his home. He was employed by Kansas City (Kan.) Street Department as an equipment operator for 20 years.
Mr. Devine was born Oct. 23, 1957, in Sterling, the son of Keith and Darlene (Lucas) Devine He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include a son, Andy of Independence, Mo.; his father of Sterling; a brother, Dale A. Devine of Woodward, Iowa; a sister, Diane Duchay of Sterling; his maternal stepgrandmother, Merle Lucas of Sterling; a niece; a nephew; an uncle; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents and two aunts, Memorial service will be at a later date in Sterling. Arrangements were completed by Maple Hill Funeral Home, Kansas City, Kan.
WILLIAM R. DEVINE
, 35, died suddenly at the home of his mother, Mrs. Roy Devine, this morning.
He was born March 22, 1930 in Sterling, the son of Roy and Irene Devine. He was educated in the Tampico schools, and had resided most of his life in the Tampico area. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Tampico.
He is survived by his mother, three sisters, Mrs. Robert (Katherine) Roush, Jr., Rock Falls, Mrs. Bernard (Bernice) Roush, Rock Falls, Mrs. Leon (Shirley) Neese, Sterling; three brothers, John, Sterling, Thomas, Tampico, and James, Rock Falls and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his father in 1960 and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 14, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, with Rev. A. M. Weitekamp officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Schmitt Funeral Chapel after 2 p.m. Thursday.
WILLIAM DEWALD II
, 54. of Sterling died Sunday, Sept. 26. 2004. He was employed by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., Sterling, as a wire drawer for 30 years, and then by First Student Transportation. Rock Falls, as a school bus drivĀer.
Mr. Dewald was born Jan. 1, 1950 in Chicago, the son of William Adam and Angeline (Biesaga) Dewald Sr. He was a 1969 graduate of Lockport High School. He attended St. Mary Church Sterling, was a past member of Roccstrs Bass club and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a son, William A. Dewald III of Rock Falls; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Prayer service is at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls, followed by the Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Jesus Dominguez, celebrant, officiating. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
JULIUS DRAVIS
- Funeral services for Julius Dravis were held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Allen Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Pritz, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church of Sterling, officiating, with burial in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Mrs. Roscoe Eades played the organ. Pallbearers were: Bud Dravis, Bill Evans, Lester Bohms, Mason Allen and Dennis Schrader. Flowers by Allens.
BERNARD DROSTE
- Born Oct 9, 1892, a son of Bernard and Louise Droste, received his schooling in Lyons, Iowa. Active in church and community life, Mr. Droste was a trustee of St. Andrew's Church, a member of the Holy Name Society and an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 326. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Droste saw active service in France and was wounded.
Mr. Droste was a director of his school district for a number of years and served as a board member on the Whiteside County Farm Bureau for three years. He was united in marriage with Catherine Wirth Jan. 19, 1921, in Tampico. They farmed in the community until 1955, when they moved to Rock Falls. Surviving with the widow are two daughters and four sons.
Attending the funeral rites Monday in St. Andrew's Church were relatives and friends from Clinton, Preston and Williams, Iowa, Geneseo, Tampico and Deer Grove.
