HANNAH (WINN) ELMENDORF was born in Olive, Ulster County, New York, October 30, 1833, (married there to Hezekiah P. Elmendorf November 23rd, 1854 who preceded her to his eternal rest, October 1928) passed on at 11:50 a.m. March 28th, 1930, leaving five sons, Rufus of Centralia, Washington; Isaac of Ironsides, Oregon; Francis of Rock Falls, Illinois; Irvin J. of Temple, Texas; Henry W. at home here and three daughters, Susan Angell of Austin, Minn.; Ida M. Pierson of Hume and Ella Jackman of Fontana, Calif., (Willis, Sarah A. and Freddie having gone on before) and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and needless to say a host of friends to follow. She died as she lived in a quiet, peaceful manner with four of her children -- Irvin, Henry, Susan and Ida, at her bedside. The end, although anticipated for sometime, as she had been in failing health for many months, coming suddenly but peacefully and yet by her foreseen as almost the last continued conversation she had just the night before, spoke of going on a long journey, evidently at that time having heard the call from her Heavenly Father, whom she had chosen very early in life to follow, and in whose footsteps she trod doing good (many times getting up from her own bed of sickness to minister unto and serve others.) Her faith was a simple, steadfast, old style kind and she knew "Whom she believeth." She was a member of the old school Baptist Branch of her Fathers Kingdom and took delight in hearing and reading His Word until no longer able to do so on account of failing health, her eyesight being bad. Mrs. Elmendorf was one of the few remaining old time pioneers of Whiteside county having come here in 1866 with her then small family, their home at first being across the road from her recent late home for several years, until the Lord had prospered them sufficiently to enable them to take over the farm and house where she has since lived with her husband and except as one by one, they scattered until only she and her devoted son Henry remained at home until death parted them and she went home to her Heavenly Father. Owing to sickness or other causes, three of her remaining children (Rufus, Isaac and Ella) were unable to be present at the funeral held at the home March 28th 1930, Rev. J. G. Little conducting the services in a most pleasing and much appreciated way, with songs "Jesus is Thee" by Mrs. Kelsey and Mr. Landis of Rock Falls. (these being two of her favorites). The pallbearers being Frank Russell, Pearl Chapin, Harry Butler, John Plock, Aaron Gaulrapp and Oscar Wetzell. The flowers both numerous and beautiful being well placed and taken care of by Mrs. Pearl Chapin and Mrs. Aaron Gaulrapp.

Elmendorf was a former Sterling City policeman. At the inquest, conducted by Lee County Coroner Robert Preston Friday night, a crane operator, Braxton Jeffry of Peoria, told the Jury he had lifted part of a side of a box car with his crane when he saw Elmendorf standing below. Jeffrey said he attempted to change the direction of the crane, but the piece of steel slipped and hit Elmendorf. A huge piece of steel came loose from a crane and crashed down on Elmendorf's head, apparently killing him instantly.

Elemendorf was employed by the Lipsett Steel Co., believed to be a Peoria wrecking firm. Work began about four weeks ago at the scene of the February train derailment, believed to be one of the largest in Illinois history. The cars were derailed when two Chicago and North Western Railway freight trains sideswiped about 2 1/2 miles west of here.
