ANDY HALLIBURTON , 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam H. Halliburton, 1954 Redwood Lane, Northbrook, died Sunday, Jan. 20. He was accidentally shot at the home of a friend. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Halliburton, 4800 Ocotillo Road, Glendale, Arizona, 85301. They are former Sterling residents and for many years operated Harlan's Market on East 5th St., Sterling.

CHARLES HAMMER - Funeral services for Charles Hammer of Morrison who died Friday in the Morrison Community Hospital after a heart attack Thursday, were held Monday afternoon in the First Methodist Church. The Rev. David Fouts, pastor, officiated and burial was made in Grove Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Glenn Craddock, Andrew Deter, Gerald Rummel; B. L. Kleinschrodt, Henry Rick and Clarence Ardapple. The beautiful floral tributes were arranged by Mrs. Pluma Beswick, Mrs. Dana Cobb, Mrs. Ray Tracy and Mrs. Reuben Garwick. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Conrady sang "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by Mrs. Abe Renkes, organist, who played an organ prelude and postlude. A short prayer service for the relatives was held at 1:45 p.m. in the church basement. The Reynolds Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

STEVEN D. HARGRAVE , 43, of Danville, Ill., formerly Erie, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at his home in Danville. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Erie United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Burial will at the Erie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Steve was born Aug. 7, 1966, in Morrison, the son of Kent and Jerri Doubler Hargrave. He is a graduate of Erie High School and Western Illinois University. He served in the Illinois Army National Guard. Steve worked for McLane Company in Danville since 1996. He loved to run and was a member of the Kennekuk Road Runners Club in Danville. He has run the Bix 7 in Davenport for the past 27 years and had personalized license plates that read "QC Bix 7". He was inducted into the Erie Athletic Hall of Fame in January of 2008 along with the 1983 cross country team. Steve also enjoyed teasing his nieces and nephew and spending time with the family on their annual vacation to Minocqua, Wis. Steve is survived by his parents; three siblings and their spouses, Kris and Dan Puent, Eureka, Ill., twin brother, Scott Hargrave, Mukilteo, Wash., Julie and Joe Jones, Reynolds; nephew, Nathaniel (Angel) Puent; and nieces, Natalie Puent, Hayley, Mya and Aylah Jones. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

EVELYN E. (BAUER) HASSELMAN , 78, of 615 Seventh Ave., Rock Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1993, at CGH Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Robert C. Kinnear, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Wheelock Allen Funeral Home, Rock Falls. A memorial has been established. Mrs. Hasselman was born June 24, 1915, in La Moille, the daughter of John and Minnie (Mohnike) Bauer. She married Clarence Hasselman Sept. 11, 1937 in LaMoille. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Falls, where she was organist for many years and also active in church activities. Survivors include her husband; one son, Mark (Lynne) Hasselman of Lake In The Hills; one daughter, Mrs. Roger (Marian) Whitlow of Charleston; five grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Conklen of Prophetstown. She was preceded in death by her parents.

BERNARD H. HAYEN , 83, of Sterling died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at CGH Medical Center. He was employed by Illinois Forge, Rock Falls, for many years retiring as an inspector, and then part-time by Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Mr. Hayen was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Coleta, the son of Albert Wilhelm and Tena (Hinrichs) Hayen. He served in the Army during World War II in the Panama Canal Zone. He married Roene Clary on Dec 28, 1946, in Sterling. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rock Falls. Survivors include his wife; three sons, The Rev. Neil (Judy) Hayen of Mallard, Iowa, Gregory Hayen of Sterling and Bruce (Julie) Hayen of O'Fallon, Mo.; a daughter Ellen Kunde of Sterling; three sisters, Irene Bruns and Helen (Milton) Harting, both of Sterling, and Esther (George) Keime of Rock Falls; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. The funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Daniel Behmlander, pastor, officiating. Burial with military rites is at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls.

HILDA (NELSON) HAYEN-MOOD , 91, of Pleasant View Nursing Home, Morrison, died Wednesday March 30, 2005 at the nursing home. She was employed by Harlan's Department Store, Morrison. Mrs. Hayen-Mood was born Sep. 2, 1913 in Morrison the daughter of Bert J. and Hattie (Beveroth) Nelson. She married Arnold P. Hayen on Sept. 13, 1932. He died in Jan. 1968. She then married Lloyd Mood on Feb. 2, 1973 in Peoria. He die din 1989. Survivors include a son, David L of Fulton; a brother Gordon of Morrison. She was preceded in death by a daughter Judith Quish; six sisters, Eliose Stone, Verna Hall, Leona Groharing, Esther Schroeder, Mildred Landheer and Doris in infancty, two proberhs Paul and Warren and two grandchildren. The funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Daniel Swinson pastor of the Morrison United Methodist Church officiating. Burial is at Grove Hill.

TINA HAYEN - The funeral service for Mrs. Albert (Tena) Hayen, 80, was conducted in Messiah Ev. Lutheran church Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. following the prayer service for the family. Her pastor shared Rom. 8:16-18 and 31-39, as well as Ps. 23 as relevant scripture lessons. Mrs. Daryl Knutsen sang "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Heaven Is My Home" before and after the sermon, with Mrs. James Kiphamer as organist. Pastor Elder Mueller's message of counsel and comfort was based on Rev. 2:10, "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life." Her record of church attendance was highly commendable and her use of the Sacrament of the Holy Communion was also exemplary. She fervently trusted in Christ Jesus for the forgiveness of her sins; in this faith she lived and in this faith she died. The floral tributes received the attention of Mrs. William Camps, Mrs. Arthur Hammer and Lundstrom's. John Wenk served as usher. The pallbearers were Keith Musselman, Carroll DeLancey, Donald Wessels, Joe Swope, Neil Hayen and Dale Hayen. The identity of the memorials will be made later through the Sunday Service Folder of Messiah Lutheran. Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery.

EDITH (STALEY) HERBON - Mrs. William Grisze of Rock Falls has received a message stating that her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lee Herbon, passed away last Thursday (11 Feb 1832) in Burbank, Calif. The funeral was held Saturday and burial made in that city. Mrs. Herbon had been in poor health for the past two years. She went to the home of a sister in Burbank, Calif., with her daughter, Miss Lillian, last fall. The mother and daughter had previously lived in Kansas City, Mo., following the death of Mr. Herbon which occurred five years ago. Before her marriage to Mr. Herbon, the deceased was Miss Edith Staley of Lyons, Ia. The family lived for a time after their marriage in Rock Falls and then moved to Moline. Mrs. Herbon has visited in Rock Falls a number of times since leaving there and has many friends who will be sorry to learn of her death. Mrs. Herbon is survived by one daughter, Miss Lillian. The latter lived for a year with her aunt, Mrs. Grisze, and attended Rock Falls Township High School. Mr. Herbon is buried in the Rock Falls Cemetery.

FLORENCE MARIE (LAUFF) HEDRICK , 88, formerly of Sterling, died Nov. 2, 1993, in Bloomington, Ind. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at St. Mary's Church, Sterling; followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 10:230 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Tampico. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Grennan Funeral home, Sterling. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Retired Sisters of Loretto and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Mrs. Hedrick was born Nov. 14, 1904 in Whiteside County, the daughter of Joseph and Hattje (Murphy) Lauff. She graduated from St. Mary High School (now Newman) in 1922 and from Brown Business College in 1923. She married Wythe E. "Bill" Hedrick, June 16, 1921. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and for the American Cancer Society in Sterling for many years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sterling. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Allison) Lendman of Spencer, Ind., and Marilyn Hermes of Sterling; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1963; one brother, Arthur J. Lauff of Jacksonville; and one grandson---

MARLA ANNA (HEMBLOCK) HEIN , died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Allen, in Tampico Saturday afternoon. A brief account of her death was given in Saturday’s STANDARD. At noon today the remains were brought from Tampico. The funeral took place in the Church of the Sacred Heart this afternoon, Rev. Father Fegers officiating. A large concourse of friends and relatives attended the service. The interment took place in the Catholic cemetery. The floral contributions were appropriate and very beautiful. Six pall bearers bore the casket to its last resting place. There were, Adam Hutton, Poter Schmitz, Henry Schryer, Matthias Schryer, John Werres and Henry Flock. Marla Anna Hemblock was born in Nettenheim, Germany, in 1831, She came to this country in the company with her parents in 1860. In 1861 she was married to Jacob Hein, and until his death, which occurred about three years ago, lived a happy life with him. She was the youngest child of a family of seven. Two sisters survive her. They live in Wisconsin and were expected to be present at the funeral. Mrs. Hein was a good woman. All who knew here loved her, and her death is mourned by many.

WILLIAM AUGUST HEIN , one of the best known and highly respected farmers in this vicinity, died Thursday morning shortly before 3 o'clock at his home a mile east of here after a short attack of acute pneumonia lasting but five days. He was first taken sick last Saturday night and grew worse until Wednesday, when Dr. Keefer of Sterling and later Dr. Smith of the same place were called in to assist Dr. Wahl, but in spite of all that could be done to stem death, he passed away. He was taken with a severe cold while helping shred corn last week at Knox's and J.M. Jacob's places and complained of not feeling well, but was not taken sick until Saturday night, from which time he grew worse rapidly until his death. The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church. Rev. G. Bernrueter will officiate and the Masons will also have charge of the services at the grave, interment will be in the Tampico cemetery. By the death of W.A. Hein, Tampico township loses an influential good citizen, who has resided in this vicinity for a number of years. He was a director of Hein school just across the road from his late home and in that capacity served faithfull and made an efficient officer. He was prominently connected with the Mason lodge here, being an officer in the Blue lodge and also president of the Fraternal Reserve lodge and a prominent Woodman and a member of the Easter Star. He has also shown himself a man worthy of the confidence and esteem of the community and to know him was to like him, as he had a frank, genial way that won him many friends. He was a successful farmer, as his fine farm east of here shows. He was beloved in his home and it is there where the kind, faithful fatehr and husband will be sorely missed. The most far piercing eye can not detect the silver lining to sudden black cloud which has enveloped the happy home. He was a great many friends, who extended to the family their most sincere thanks. W.A. Hein was born February 15, 1857 at Newark, Ill., and when about two years old moved with his parents to the old home three miles east of here where Jacob Hein lives at present. He lived there until about three years ago when he moved to the farm a mile east of Tampico where he has resided since.
He was married March 31, 1892, to Liva M. Cain, and two children came from this union. Mary and Mason. His wife stricken by the sudden death of her loved companion, the two children and four sisters and two brothers survive as follows: Mrs. Weber of Sterling, Mrs. John Shauff of Hahnaman, Mrs. William Wahl of Sterling, Mrs. Fred Allen of Tampico, Gus Hein of Eried, Jacob Hein of Hahnaman.

MELODIE (PASCHAL) HEMMINGER - Funearl services for Mrs. Melodie Hemminger, 309 Kloss St., Rock Falls, will be held at 1:30 p.m Friday in the Melvin Funeral ome. The Rev. Richard J. Hanson of St. John's Lutheran Church will officiate, and burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Hemminger was pronounced dead on arrival at community General Hospital Wednesday morning. She was born July 5, 1947 in Sterling, the daughter of Fay D. and Esther M. Walter Paschal. She was educated in the Rock Falls public schools and was recently employed at Jul's Danish Farm in Rock Falls. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Esther M. Paschal of Rock Falls and three sisters, Mrs. Ronald (Ginger) Rude of Rock Falls, Miss Bonnie Paschal of Sterling, and Miss Ramona Paschal of Rock Falls. Her father, Fay D. Paschal preceded May 3, 1971. A brother, David, preceded in infancy. An inquiry was conducted by county coroner, John Ardapple and death was due to natural causes. PAUL W. HEPPEL , 81, of 1834 Locust Apt. B., Sterling, died early Monday morning in Rock Falls Colonial Acres. Memorial services will be conducted by the Sterling Moose Lodge 726 Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Allen Funeral Home in Sterling. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home in Sterling. A memorial has been established in his memory. Mr. Heppel was born on Jan. 26, 1905 in Ginnheim, Germany, the son of Wilheim and Katharine Heeb Heppel. He came to the United States in 1923. On May 26, 1926 he was united in marriage to Erma Louise Bauer in Sterling. The deceased was a self employed plumber, starting his own business in 1930, and retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Sterling Moose Lodge 726 for 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Erma of Rock Falls, one son, Harry Heppel of Sterling; and two grandchildren, Michael Heppel of Sterling, and Cheryl Heppel of Rockford. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

DORIS (ROBINSON) HERALD , 83, of Longmont, Colo., formerly of Propehtstown, died Monday at her home in Colorado. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Prophetstown, with Rev. Bruce Janes, officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Gardner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown. A memorial has been established. Mrs. Herald was born Oct. 19, 1904 in Ambler, Pa., the daughter of John and Emma (Kehrwieder) Robinson. She married Robert A. Herald Feb. 16, 1938 in Chicago. He died December 1984. Following her marriage, they moved to Prophetstown in 1939 and owned and operated Herald's Walgreen Agency until 1964. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and its Sarah Circle, the Wa-Tan-Ye Club and Womens Club. She was active in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and for many years served as the local chairman of the Heart Fund. She also worked as a volunteer at the Prophetstown Riverview Center and Winnig Wheels Care Center. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Hogan of Chicago; one son, Robert F. Herald, Longmont; two grandchildren; one sister, Clio Cooley of Mission, Kan.

BERNICE GENEVA (SAWYER) HERRING , 38, of Rockford, passed away Wednesday morning, April 28, 1965 in Rockford Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for two years. She was born Jan. 29, 1927, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Sawyer, in Welch, W. Va., where she was reared and educated. She married Richard Herring, Feb. 14, 1958, in Sterling. They lived for two years in Michigan, and for the past four years had lived in Rockford. She is survived by her husband, her father, Emmett Sawyer; four brothers, Thomas, Blaine, Kenneth, and Harold, one sister, Mrs. Calvin (Wanda) Pond of Sterling. She was preceded in death by her mother. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. from the Schmitt Chapel, Tampico. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the Tampico Memorial Cemetery.

EDNA (EILERS) HOOVER , 65, 716 Oakley Ave., Rockford, died Thursday afternoon (06 Mar 1975) in her home after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Elzie R. Ulrey Chapel of Chimes, 7000 West State St., Rockford. The Rev. Curtis Rolfe, pastor of St. John’s United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Kishwaukee Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Edna Hoover was born Dec. 2, 1909 in Whiteside County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Eilers. She lived in Rockford 35 years, coming from Whiteside County. She married Ernest M. Hoover in Sterling on Feb 6, 1929. Survivors include her husband, three sons, Paul and Allan, both of Rockford and Robert of Hortonville, Wis.; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Ruth) Plock of Rockford, Mrs. Jim (Jane) Keilback of Winnebago and Mrs. Donald (Bernice) Olesen of Hayward, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence Eilers of Sterling and Lester Eilers of Rock Falls; and a sister, Mrs. Emery Tompkins of Sterling.

HARRY HOOVER - Sterling, September 5, 1945 – The funeral of Dr. Harry G. Hoover, 80, Whiteside County veterinarian, who passed away at his home Tuesday morning (September 4, 1945) as the result of a heart attack, will be held at the Woods funeral home at 3:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. Frederick Wyngarden, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at the Riverside Cemetery, Sterling. The Knights Templar will be in charge of the service. The oldest veterinarian in active practice in Whiteside County, Dr. Hoover was born July 16, 1865 at Sterling. Surviving are his widow, Della; five children, Mrs. H. G. Thuesen, Stillwater, Okla.; Janet Hoover, Wichita, Kansas; George, Margaret, and Emma Julia Hoover, all of Chicago; four grandchildren; two brothers, Edward S. Hoover, Geneseo, and Frank Hoover, Minburn, Iowa. One brother died previously.

LIZZIE A. (LeFEVRE) HOOVER , died this morning shortly after midnight at her home, 604 Boradway. Dropsy and a complication of diseases was the cause of her demise. The funeral will be held Sunday [10/13/1912] afternoon at the residence, Rev. C. A. Riley, pastor of the congregational church, officiating. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery. Lizzie A. Le Fevre was born in Lancaster county, Pa., April 14, 1867. She was married in this city to John H. Hoover Jan. 30, 1889. Two children besides the loving husband remain to mourn her demise. They are Verna M. and Glen L., both of whom reside at home. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. W. B. Carolus of this city and Mrs. N. E. Buyers of Goshen, Ind., and three brothers, Ezra, Grant and Charles Le Fevre, all of Sterling. Her parents and one sister, Ida, preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Hoover was taken ill and for the first time considerably over a year ago. Since that time her condition has gradually grown worse until her demise. A few weeks ago she went to Chicago to consult a specialist, but her search for health proved fruitless and she rapidly grew weaker until the end came. Mrs. Hoover was an earnest christian woman—a woman who loved her home and family above all things. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of their many friends in this, their hour of sorrow.

Obituary: Mrs. Lizzie A. Hoover, born LeFevre, was born in Lancaster county Pa., April 14, 1867, and died at her home, 604 Broadway at 12:05 this morning, after an illness of more than a year. She was married to J. H. Hoover Jan. 30, 1889 and to this union were born two children, Miss Verna M. Hoover and Glenn L. Hoover. Besides her husband and children, she leaves to mourn her untimely death two sisters Mrs. W. B. Carolus of Sterling and Mrs. N. E. Byers of Goshen, Ind., and three brothers, Ezra, Grant and Charles LeFevre, all of Sterling. The funeral will be held Sunday [10/13/1912] afternoon at her late home, Rev. C. A. Riley of the Congregational church of which she was a member, officiating. Both her parents and one sister, Miss Ida LeFevre, preceded her in death about four years ago. In the death of Mrs. Hoover a noble woman has gone, one who performed first her duty to her God, next to the members of her family, of which she was the loved queen. She was a woman who had many excellent qualities and very few faults, and always had a good word for everyone of whom she spoke, being universally loved and respected by her family, friends and acquaintances. At the time of her passing away, just as the old day had died and the new one was ushered in, her bed side was surrounded by nearly all her relatives and loved ones.

MAY (GREEN) HOOVER , 86, 101 E. Morris St., died at 12:45 this morning (16 Sep 1960) in the Morrison Community Hospital where she had been a patient for the past four weeks. She had been in failing health about four months. May Green was born Nov. 24, 1873 in Ustick Township, the daughter of John H. and Margaret Lawry Green. She was married on June 23, 1897 at the home of her parents in Morrison to Benjamin Franklin Hoover. They farmed in Ustick township for three years before moving to Lyndon where they rented a farm for two years before buying a farm in Lyndon Township, which they operated for 43 years. They retired and moved into Morrison in 1946. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the church, was active in the Sunday School; was a member of the Household Science Club and the Garden Club. Survivors are her husband, two sons, Glenn Hoover, Waterman, and Walter Hoover, Chicago; two granddaughters; three great-grandsons and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Everett; three brothers, Gilbert, Banjamin and one in infancy; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Abbott and Miss Phoebe Green. The body was removed to the Reynolds Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. this evening. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Saturday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery.

VERNA (FULFS) HOOVER , 97, of Sterling, died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Coventry Village. Mrs. Hoover was born July 30, 1907 in Sterling, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Johnson) Fulfs. She married Roy Hoover on April 10, 1930 in the parsonage of the First Lutheran Church of Jordan. Survivors include several nieces & nephews. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 25, 2005 at Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Woita pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Polo officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling, Illinois. Visitation will be 9-10, Saturday, June 25 at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, IL.

ANNA MAY (SCHURER) HURD - The funeral services for the late Mrs. Anna May Hurd, 52, well known Morrison resident, who passed away Saturday afternoon following a short illness, were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Reynolds Funeral Home with the Rev. W. R. Wilson, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Grove Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Hurd was born July 15, 1893 in Union Grove, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Matt Schurer. She graduated from the local high school in 1921, and was married in 1918 to Resolved Hurd at Morrison. Mrs. Hurd was a member of the Morrison First Methodist Church. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Charles Hammer and Mrs. J. E. Gsell, Morrison; two brothers, Harry, Morrison, and Clarence Schurer, North Chicago. A son, Warren, died in 1942 at two years of age.

HAROLD C. HURD - 77, of 105 Ninth Ave., Sterling, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1996 at CGH Medical Center following a brief illness. There will be no funeral services. Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitatiion. Arrangements were completed by the Allen-Melvin Funeral Home, Sterling. A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association. Mr. Hurd was born June 25, 1918 in Sterling, the son of Harold C. and Olive B. (Long) Hurd. He married Evelyn Randall Dec. 24, 1936 in Saint John's Lutheran Church, Sterling. He was employed at International Harvester as a welder and at Saunders as a mecahnic. He was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church, Sterling. Survivors include his wife of Sterling; three sons, David Hurd of Sterling, Larry (Martha) Hurd of Grove City, Ohio, and Tim Hurd of Bettendorf, Iowa; one daughter, Nancy (Stan) Larem of Chadwick; ten grandchildren, including one speical grandson Tim; and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Martin Hurd.

HARRY MARTIN HURD - 80, passed away Saturday evening (07 Dec 1968) at the Sterling Commnity General Hospital after an illness of some time. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Schmitt Chapel, the Rev. Clarke Devore of the Tampico Christian Church officiating, with burial in Tampico Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Monday (today). A memorial has been established in his name. Harry Hurd was born Aug. 11, 1888 in Pine Creek, the son of Martin and Nancy Stouffer Hurd. He lived in the Tampico vicinity about 43 years and was engaged in farming and in business in Tampico before retiring. He married Elizabeth Robde on Jan. 27, 1925 in Clinton, Iowa. He is survived by his widow; two sons, Harry Hurd Jr. of Tampico and Kenneth Charles Hurd of Sterling; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; two brothers, Jake of rural Rock Falls, and John of Sterling; one sister, Mrs. Mabel Wagner of Lakeland, Fla., several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents and one brother Harold.

MARTIN B. HURD - Funeral services for Lt. Martin B. Hurd, 25 of Sterling will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island at 11:30 a.m. C.S.T. Thursday July 21 (1945). Lt. Hurd was born in Coloma Twp. April 9, 1920. He was educated in the Central and Sterling Township High School. He was graduated from the later school in 1938. Following this he was employed by the International Harvester Co.Chicago. He left Sterling Feb. 6, 1942 and went to Camp Grant, and left there Feb. 13 1942 for Sheppard Field Texas. He was trained in the Mechanical school. On November 30, 1943 he became a ferry pilot and received an assignment in training at Homestead Fla. After he was graduated he was sent to the Indo-China theatre. Lt. Hurd was a pilot of a cargo plane that crashed in the mountains at Kunming, China September 9, 1945. He was killed in the crash. A posthumous award of the air medal was issued to Lt. Hurd "for distinguishing himself by meritious achievement while participating in aerial action from March 18, 1945 to July 31, 1945. Survivors are his parents Mr. and Mrs. Harold C. Hurd, 712 Fourth Ave. Sterling, one daughter Pamela 5, of New York City and one brother Harold of Sterling.
