CHARLES F. LANGE - Morrison , Feb. 11. Well Known Pioneer Passes To Reward At County Seat
Charles Lange Dies at the home of his daughter in Morrison
Was Born in Liepsic, Germany, in the Year of 1825
Charles Lange passed away Thursday morning at 1:30, of the infirmaties of old age, after an illness of about five weeks. Charles Lange was born in Leipsic, German, April 17/ 1825, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martha Foreman, on the 10th day of February, 1910, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 23 days. He was married in Germany to Miss Johanna Charlotte Miller, to whom were born ten children, five of whom are dead. The living are: Mrs. Louisa Bristle, Mrs. Martha Foreman, Albert, Frank and Edward Lange, all of whom reside in this county in the vicinity of Morrison, except Frank, who is connected with the Ahren' department store in Sterling. Mr. Lange during his residence in Germany, served his time in the army, arising to an official capacity on account of ability. In 1860 he and his family removed to Canada, remaining in that country until 1876, when he moved to Morrison, near which city he has resided ever since with the exception of about three years residence in Ustick. His business has been farming and gardening. He made a special study of the latter and during the later years of his life he was very successfull in crosssing breeds of plants, having produced a new variety of strawberries in that way. He has always been a consistent member of the Lutheran church, establishing a reputation for honesty and reliability wherever he has been and has always been a hard working man, it being no unusual sight, any time up to the date of his eightieth birthday, to see him working in the soil early and late. Mrs. Lange preceded her husband in death, on the 6th of November, 1897. Five children who have died were Carl, Morris, Augustus, Amiel and Paul, and the manner of the death of three of them was out of the ordinary. One of them was teetering with an elder brother while the family still resided in Germany. The older brother was the heavier of the two and when his end of the teetering board came down the smalller brother was thrown in the air and in coming down his head struck a nail, which entered his temple, killing him almost instantly. Another of the fibe died on the voyage to America, his trouble being homesickness induced because of his spearation from another brother who was ill of the smallpox. A third brother, shortly after the arrival in Canada, while walking upon some logs, fell into the river and was drowned. The funeral services will be held Saturday from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Foreman, at 2 o'clock p. m., Rev. W. C. Crofts officiating. Interment will be made in Grove Hll Cemetery.

The deceased was born in Steuben county, N. Y., Dec. 1, 1822, where he was brought up on a farm and well educated. He began teaching school when twenty years of age, and alternated that pursuit with farming until he came to Whiteside county, Illinois with his parents, Reuel and Sally (Robins) Lathe, in 1845. In 1846 he bought eighty acres of land in Lyndon township, on which he made the first improvements two years later. He broke a few acres and set out an orchard, as a beginning of the work of putting his property under thorough cultivation. The agricultural affairs of Mr. Lathe were proceeding prosperously, when his buildings, fences and orchard were swept away by the tornado of June 3, 1860. He rebuilt all of the buildings upon the farm two years later, and soon had it under a good state of cultivation again. Mr. Lathe was united in marriage April 4, 1849, to Pamelia, daughter of John P. and Candace Sands. His wife died Sept. 1, 1854, and on Dec. 1, 1855, he was married to Martha M. Hickcox. His second wife was so severely injured in the tornado in 1860 that she did not recover for nearly two years. She is still living and now resides with her nephew, Charles, near Erie. Mr. Lathe gave up active work on the farm about fifteen years ago, and for five years or more had resided with his nephew. During the Past six months he was troubled by the action of his heart, but on Friday evening he felt unusually well and enjoyed a few games of checkers with members of the household. At about one o'clock Saturday morning Mr. Lathe summoned his nephew. He complained of a serious attack of the heart, and died almost instantly. JOHN LATHE Died at big residence in Lyndon township, Whiteside Co., Ill, June 22,1881, JOHH LATHE, aged 61 years. The deceased was born at Charlton, Mass., June 16, 1820, and removed to Hornby, Steuben Co., N.Y., in 1821. Here his youth was darkened by the customary neglect of sanitary rules, which, with the farm-work incident to clearing stony forest land, told upon a constitution never very strong; yet he so improved his common school advantages that at twenty four he held and used several of the ornate "Certificates of Character and Qualifications" granted teachers in those days. In May 1844, he started for Illinois, and arrived in Lyndon after traveling thirty days to cover the 774 miles intervening. "Chicago City," he notes in his diary. "has some bad roads." He went immediately to work on arrival and was of much assistance in helping his parents locate on their arrival the next season, besides teaching in the Erie schools pupils who are gray haired men and women now. In 1848 be married Miss S. M. Smith and began life upon the farm where they have since resided; and it is to their united labor that whatever improvements it has more than prairie sod, is due. His widow with their two sons still live to mourn a faithful loving husband and noble father whose retiring humility the more endeared him to those who raised the veil of his reticence. His public life was not marked by high official positions but was executed with accuracy and strict impartiality during over 21 years service as assessor and one supervisor of Lyndon. He was temperate, industrious and abstemious, and said little, but that little was well said, and with a character of spotless integrity and blameless reputation he trod the path between the rich and poor so that men of both classes were 'every neighbor a friend a brother.' During the last half dozen years his health has been slowly slipping away, yet he never complained or abandoned his habit of work and seemed as well as usual upon retiring to the sleep from which he never woke, but passed away without a struggle. His funeral was largely attended by those who knew him well, and loving hands prepared the last resting place and laid to rest, beneath the tress his hands had planted, a true friend, a kind neighbor, a wise instructor and an honest man.

MOSES LATHE , an old settler of Lyndon, died at his home in that place Tuesday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the age of about eighty years. A few days ago he was stricken with paralysis and this with apoplexy caused his death, although he had been in poor health for some time. The funeral will be held at the Congregational church at 9:30 o'clock this morning, interment taking place in the Lyndon cemetery. Mr. Lathe was one of the earliest settlers in Lyndon and was highly respected by all who knew him. About a year ago he met with an accident by which one of hips was broken, from which accident he never fully recovered. Mr. Lathe held several positions of trust in Lyndon township, had been a director of the Morrison Fair Association for some years and was a prominent citizen during his long residence in Lyndon. He has been a regular subscriber to the SENTINEL since its first issue and always a warm friend in its support. He leaves a widow and several children to mourn his sudden death. He also leaves two brothers, Jabez Lathe of Lyndon and B. F. Lathe, who resides about two miles north of this city.

CHARLES J. LEE - Monday morning our people were somewhat shocked on receiving word of the death of Charles J. Lee. Mr. Lee has been suffering for two years or more from the effects of an abcess upon his liver which resulted in consumption. He had been very ill for sometime and though quite sick he had not been confined to his bed. He was in town last week and said he felt better than he had been feeling for some time. Sunday night he went to bed and slept quite soundly. At 11 o'clock Mrs Lee went to his room and found him sleeping soundly. At four o'clock she again went to his room and found him still apparently asleep, but on close observations she found that he was dead, having apparently died while asleep without a struggle. Charles J. Lee was born in Hume township at the home of his parents on July 14, 1866, and died at his home in Hume on Monday, July 30, 1900. He was married to Irma Van Demark April 20th, 1891, and their union was blessed with five children, B. Wayne, C. Leland, Eugene F., M. Mildred and Irma L., three of whom survive him, two of whom, Eugene and Irma, have proceeded him to that other world. Besides his wife and children he leaves a father and mother whose home is now in Sterling and six brothers, Frank Lee of Springville, Iowa; Turner and Fay of Rock Falls, Abe of Sterling, John and Dan of Chicago. Mr. Lee was a farmer and a hard working and frugal man. In the fall of 1894 he lost an arm while working a corn shredder, and although only having one arm there were few who did more work than he did. He was too ambitious and worked far beyond his strength and thus shortened his days. He was loved by his family and friends and respected by all. The funeral took place at the home Wednesday morning at 10:30. Rev. Geo. Bernreuter officiating, and he was laid at rest in the Tampico cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS I take this method to kindly thank my friends and neighbors who so willingly assisted in the late sickness and burial of my dear husband. Their acts or kindness and words of sympathy and consolation will ever be remembered. (Mrs. Irma Lee)

ELIZABETH (WETZELL) LEE , was born at Cranesville, PA., Jan. 8, 1841, and died at her home, 107 6th Avenue, Sterling, IL., Nov. 24, 1924, aged 83 years, 10 months, and 16 days. These are the boundary lines of a remarkably long and useful life. Our community does well to pause in the midst of its many activities to do honor to the memory of these pioneers whose spirit of noble courage and ceaseless industry has left unto us following them such a rich heritage. The parents of the departed were Daniel and Mary Wetzel, of stury, pioneer stock, which in the year 1849 helped push civilization westward from their native state of Pennsylvania to Illinois. She was united into marriage, Dec. 18, 1859, to Marshall T. Lee, Rev. Isaac Mooney performing the wedding ceremony. The name of Lee is an honored one in the history of our United States of America. The family divided in the early years of the last century, part of the setting in Virginia, and the other moving to Illinois. The tragedy of the 60's was that they were arrayed against each other during the Civil War. Yet withal men like Robert E. Lee, were worthy of foes. To Mr. and Mrs. Lee, seven children came to bless the union of their lives, three of whom, Marshall T. Jr., Charles J., and La Fayette, have preceded their mother in death. The living are: John Henry, Chicago, Ill; Francis M. Lee, Tampico, Ill; Abraham L., Sterling; and Daniel W., Denver, Colo. The husband and father survives, in feeble health, but with memories clear of events in the past, especially of an adventure across the plains of Nebraska to the Pike's Peak in the Rocky Mountains and then south into Mexico in the 50's, as well as the even greater experience as a Union soldier of Gen. U. S. Grant's Western Army as a sharpshooter in the years 1861-65, being at one time 45 consecutive days under fire, and never once wounded in the battles of Shiloh, Lookout Mt., Kenesaw Mt., and on Sherman's famous march to the sea. Had Mrs. Lee been permitted to live less than another month they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, an occasion so rare in any community as to give it an unusual distinction of peculiar interest. For nearly thirty years they made their home a mile and half from Coleta, and with the exception of a brief residence in Tampico, the remaining thirty-five years of their lives have been spent in Sterling. Besides the husband and children mentioned, one brother, John Henry Wetzel, Elgin, Ill., and a great number of friends remain to mourn their loss. Mrs. Lee, in feeble health for a number of years, was the victim of a fall early in September, in which she sustained a fractured hip, the direct cause, without doubt, of her death. Her youngest son gives this fine tribute to his mother: "She was one of God's noblewomen, doing her duty as she was given the light to see it, unfaltering and uncomplainingly, in spite of a frail constitution that has for years meant much suffering, and little of what are ordinarily locked upon as the pleasures of life. She reared to maturity a large family without mis-guiding a single footstep. She suffered privation and hardship for her country's sake, while her husband and father did his bit on the battlefields of the Civil War. "She lived only for other, and when she died Monday evening, she passed away as she had always lived, without one fear or doubt for the future-a passing so gentle and peaceful that it was almost impossible to distinguish the dividing line between the two lives."

MRS. FRANK LEE , 68, passed away at her home northwest of Tampico at five o'clock Tuesday afternoon, following a paralytic stroke which she suffered on Sunday. Mrs. Lee, daughter of Edwin and Harriet Wilber, was born June 10, 1865 at Springville, Ia. On Jan. 24, 1889 she was united in marriage to Frank Lee at Springville. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, one son, Herbert of Tampico, five grandchildren of Tampico, and one sister, Mrs. Lou Wheelock of Rock Falls. A son, daughter and brother preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the hoome with Rev. W.W. Maxwell officiating. Inerment will be made in the Tampico Cemetery.
