CALVIN MADISON - On Saturday evening, March 7, 1896, about six o’clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Sweet, Mr. Calvin Madison died. He had been in poor health for several months but was only confined to his bed about one week. All was done for him that could be done but diabetes proved fatal. Mr. Madison was born in Blenheim Schohane Co, New York, on Jan. 14, 1817. He was married to Sarah M. Hall, at Andes, Delaware Co., New York, on Dec. 30, 1845. to them were born six children, two of whom died in infancy. Three children, Mrs. Gersham Sweet, Ira Madison and Mrs. John Dick were at his bedside during his last sickness and in attendance at the funeral. The oldest son John Y. Madison, of Chicago, was not present at the funeral. Mr. Madison was a man of more than ordinary brain power. He held public office nearly all of his manhood years. He was a man of kind heart, honest in his dealings and very out spoken as to his opinion and exceedingly careful in his statements as to truthfulness. Mr. Madison moved with his family to Illinois in 1874. During most of the time since he has resided in Jordan Township, Whiteside Co. Since the marriage of his youngest son and daughter, Mrs. Martha Dick, who lives but a few rods from the home of Mrs. Sweet, so he had constant care of two fond daughters who did all in their power to prolong his life and make him happy. A few days before his death he went to the home of Mrs. Sweet for a visit but was taken worse and died there. The funeral was held at Mr. Gersham Sweet’s and was attended by many friends. Rev. Barr, of Polo, conducted the services and the remains were laid to rest in the Reed Cemetery beside his wife who died twelve years ago.

SETTA (BASHAN) MASSA , 92, died Sunday in the Riverside Nursing Home in Rock Falls following a short illness. She had resided at the nursing home for the past 11 years. The body was brought to the Schilling Funeral Home where friends may call this evening. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the East Fork Baptist Church near Coffeen. Burial will be iN the Shiloh Cemetery near Coffeen. Setta Bashan was born July 25, 1868 in Waggoner, Ill. She attended the Waggoner area schools. She was married to Henry Massa in Waggoner in 1898. He preceded her in death 32 years ago. She made her home in Erie for four years before entering the nursing home. She was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are two sons, William Massa, Erie; Howard Massa of Elizabeth, and five grandchildren.

CHARLES WILLIAM McCALL , 81, died yesterday afternoon in his home here. Born in Rock Island county May 26, 1866, he had been a resident of Morrison since 1906. He served as treasurer of Whiteside county from 1906 until 1910, was Circuit clerk from 1913 to 1923, and in that year was appointed a member of the state board of pardons and paroles by Gov. Len Small, serving until 1929. Surviving are his widow, a son, Charles, Springfield; a step-daughter, Mrs. Ralph McLarnan, Clinton, Ia., and one grandchild. Services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday at the home, with burial in Grove Hill cemetery.

LOUISE (BRAGG) McCLELLAND , 83, of Sterling, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at her home. Committal services will be Monday at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego. Arrangements were completed by Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling. A memorial has been established to National Kidney Foundation and the arthritis Foundation. Mrs. McClelland was born Jan. 25, 1916 in Gratiot, Wis., the daughter of Samuel and Clara (Larson) Bragg. She was a Lt. j.g. in the Navy during World War II. She married Harlan McClelland on the island of Saipan, Marianas Island,, in 1948. He died in April, 1951. She was a registered nurse employed at the Sterling-Rock Falls Clinic for 26 years, retiring in 1986. Survivors include a son, Mac McClelland of Sterling; a daughter, Sandy Johnson of Sterling; a sister, Margaret Morgan of Gratiot, Wis.; two grandsons, and a great grandson.

SAMUEL McGREGOR - The funeral of Samuel McGregor, 81, of 704 Civic Plaza, Rock Falls, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Behrens Mortuary with the Rev. David Fouts of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. The burial will be in the Erie Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary from 4 to 9 p.m. today. Samuel McGregor was born March 31, 1891, in Erie, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Harriet Cronk) McGregor. He died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday in Community General Hospital following an extended illness. He attended the Wheelock School and operated a garage in Erie for several years. He went to California in 1940 and lived in San Diego, returning to Sterling in 1950, where he had since resided. He was united in marriage with Mayme Ryan, May 7, 1914, who preceded in February 1921. On Aug 28, 1923, he was united in marriage to Marie Paasch, who survives with one son and one daughter, Robert John McGregor of Grass Valley, Calif., and Ruth McGregor Boree of Fairfield, Calif. There are 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, one son and his first wife. Mr. McGregor was a 50-year member and past grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge and member of the First United Methodist Church of Sterling.

CHARLES J. McGUIRE - With the war ended, two more former Whiteside County young men have been added to the honor roll. Both young men were residents of Belmond, Iowa, at the time they entered the service. There is a strange coincidence in the obituary of the two men; both were born in Illinois, moved to Iowa, were the same age, the same occupation -- farmers -- died the same month, and the messages of their deaths were received by the parents in the same week.
CHARLES J. McGUIRE - stretcher bearer in the One Hundred Twenty-ninth Infantry, Company B, was killed in action in France on October 17. He was born January 9, 1894, near Sterling, Ill. On February 25, 1918, he was called to the service, being assigned to the national guard unit mentioned, and sailed for France May 10. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. McGuire of Belmond.

ARTHUR McLINDSAY - Funeral services for Arthur McLindsay, 616 Ave. E. Rock Falls, were conducted in the Wheelock-Allen Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Harry E. Shiffer, pastor-emeritus of the First Christian Church of Rock Falls, officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery. Mrs. Wayne E. Larson was organist. Pallbearers were from Rock Falls Legion Post 902, who presented the flag at the graveside. They were Fred Alexander, Al Melville, Earl Wolfe, Billy Whiles, LeRoy Bender and John Olson.

ROY C. MEGLI , 84, 802 E. 12th, Sterling, died Friday evening at Colonial Acres, Rock Falls. Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Reformed Mennonite Church, Sterling. Services will be conducted by the church. Burial will be at the Mennonite Section of Riverside Cemetery. Visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Melvin-Schilling Funeral Home. Megli will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Monday. He was born Aug. 19, 1894, Mitchell County, Kansas, son of David and Elizabeth (Wiens) Megli. He was educated by Mitchell County schools. he married Anna S. Plettner. She preceded him in 1962. He then married Olive Puckett, Nov. 1964. Megli resided in the Sterling-Rock Falls area his entire life where he engaged in farming. He is a member of the Reformed Mennonite Church, Sterling. Survivors include his widow, Olive, one son, Leo, Rock Falls; three daughters, Mrs. Elmer V. (Edna E) Sedig, Sterling; Mrs. Sterling (Ellen) Schrock, Hancock, Mich.; Mrs. Warren (Rose Mary) Harms, Lanark; 30 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, two step sons, Paul and Neil Puckett, Reno, Nev.; one brother, Lyle Megli, Tampico; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Frantz, Tacoma, Wash. He was preceded by his first wife.

GEORGE MELNESS , 66, of 506 Eighth Ave., Sterling, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999. Funeral services will be at noon Thursday at Grennan Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. Dalmus Meeks, pastor of Harvest Time Bible Church, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established. Mr. Melsness was born March 2, 1933, in Sacred Heart, Minn.; the son of George and Ethel (Yeager) Melsness. He married June VanDyke on Aug. 14, 1954, in Renville County, Minn. She died Jan. 31, 1987. He married Mary Schaffner on July 5, 1988, in Dixon. She survives. He worked for 25 years as a railroad engineer in the scrapyard at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., Sterling, until his retirement on March 1, 1987. Survivors include two sons, Rodney (Lori) Melsness and Tim (Stacey) Melsness, both of Sterling; three daughters, Diane (Kirby) Holland of Grand Detour, Janet Melsness of Sterling and Robin Baumgart of Milwaukee, Wis.; three stepchildren, Cindy (Tim) Villa of Rock Falls, Ronnie Robinett, not of this area, and Sandra Robinett of Morrison; a brother, Larry Melsness of Minnesota; a sister, Betty Abbas of Sterling; seven grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, a brother and a sister.

ANNAMAE VIRGINIA MELVILLE , 80, of Sterling, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at CGH Medical Center. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Melville was born June 12, 1922 in Sterling, the daughter of Arthur and Clara (Owen) Hussung. She married Arthur Brown. He preceded her in death. She then married Arthur Melville. He preceded her in death.She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sterling, where she sang in the church choir. She was a foster grandmother at several Sterling elementary schools. Survivors include three sons, Todd (Linda) Melville of Rockford, Brad Melville of Naperville and Kurt Melville of Cherry Valley; a sister, Selma Ellmaker of Boone, Iowa; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur "Bud" Hussung and Charles Hussung. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, with Rev. Christine Gilbert, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Sterling, officiating. A memorial has been established to First United Methodist Church, Sterling.

PHYLLIS M. (NEAR) MERFELD - Bernard, Iowa: - Phyllis J. Merfeld, 52, of Rt. 1, Bernard, Iowa, died Wednesday in her home after a long illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Church, Garryowen, Iowa, with Rev. Thomas Bisenius officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Merfeld was born Nov. 9, 1936 in Rock Falls, the daughter of Ralph and Katherine (Portner) Near. She married Willie Merfeld on Feb. 19, 1982 at St. Patrick's Church, Garryowen, Iowa. She graduated from Como High School. She was an Army veteran. She was employed as secretary for many years for Great Plains Supply Co., Bernard. She also worked for Bernard Telephone Co. and St. Patrick's Church. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and its Rosary Society. LAWRENCE MODLER , 50, died at 9:25 p.m. Thursday at the home of a sister, Mrs. Arthur Fossett, 406 E. 3rd Ave., Rock Falls, after an illness of six months. The body was taken to the Melvin Funeral Home where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Lawrence R. Axelson, pastor of the Fourth Street Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Odd Fellows Cemetery. He was employed as an electrician with the Virgil Cook and Son Company for the past three years. He was born Dec. 6, 1905 in Sterling, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Wolber Modler. Surviving are one son, James, Hamilton, Mont.; a grandson, Douglas Lee Modler, also of Hamilton; three sisters, Mrs. Otto Dencklau, Vincent, Ia.; Mrs. Elmer Kauffman, Sterling, and Mrs. Arthur Fossett, Rock Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

WALTER MODLER , 73, formerly of 1807 14th Ave., Rock Falls, died early Monday morning in the Rock Falls Manor after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Wheelock-Allen Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Zager; pastor of the Rock Falls United Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Rock Falls. Military rites will be conducted at the grave by Sterling VFW Post 326 and the Rock Falls American Legion Post 902. Visitation is from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Modler was born Dec. 15, 1908 in Sterling, the son of Charles and Anna (Seabeck) Modler. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and after his discharge, he attended Molers Barber College in Chicago, and then practiced the barber trade in Rock Falls prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Rock Falls Masonic Lodge 936 AF & AM., Chaplain Commander of Sterling, member of the Consistery of Freeport, Tebalah Shrine of Rockford, Rock River Valley Shrine Club, Past Patron of the Rock Falls Order of Eastern Star 706, White Shrine of Morrison and Past Rainbow Dad of Sterling Assembly 53. He was a member of the Rock Falls American Legion Post 902 and the Sterling VFW Post 326. He is survived by three sons, Walter Jr. of North Ridge, California; Captain Michael Modler of Colorado Springs, Colorado with the U.S. Army, and Mark at home; four daughters, Mrs. John (Ann) Alson of Magalia, California, Mrs. John (Candy) Childresa and Miss Melody Sanders, both of Phoenix, Arizona and Mrs. Gene (Polly) Folsom of Germany; 16 grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Albert Modler of Iowa and one sister, Mrs. Lucetta McAleese of West Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mammie Lancaster.

ALICE ESTELLE (BRESSLER) MOEDE - Funeral Mrs. Paul Moede on Friday The funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Paul Moede will be held at noon Friday at the Moede home, near Van Patten. The funeral services will be private. The sermon will be preached by Rev. E. C. Haris, pastor of St. Johns Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery. Alice Bressler was born north of this city thirty eight years ago on July 4, being a daughter of Benjamin Bressler. She was married to Paul Moede twenty years ago on Thanksgiving evening. To this union seven children were born, they being John, Florence, Charles, Mabel, Paul, Alice and Dorothy. She is also survived by her husband and one brother, William Bressler. Mrs. Moede passed away Tuesday morning at 8:45 o'clock, death being due to a complication of diseases. She was a kindly woman, a good neighbor, a loving mother and a true wife, and her death has cast a gloom of sorrow over the home. The grief stricken relatives have the sincere sympathy of the community in their hour of sorrow.

ELLAMAE (VOSS) MOLDERMAKER , 88, of 1025 7th Ave, Fulton, IL died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, IA. Ellamae was born July 26, 1919 in Fulton, IL, to John C. and Katie (Bonneur) Voss. She was educated in Fulton grade schools and graduated from Fulton High School in 1938. Ellamae married George W. Moldermaker on September 18, 1940 in Fulton. Together they owned and operated Moldermaker Greenhouse in Fulton. She also worked at Climco Coils Co. in Morrison, IL. She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, where she belonged to the Ladies Aid Society. She also taught Sunday school for many years. Survivors include her husband, George; one daughter, Mrs. Linda K. Miley of Fulton, MO; one son, Larry (Sandy) Moldermaker of Johnston, IA; two grandchildren, Sarah (Mrs. Roy) Rohrbach and Angela (Mrs. Joe) Vogel; two step-grandchildren, Mike (Julee) Bruce and Laurie Zimmerman; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Alan (Lucy) Voss of Fulton,IL. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles N. Voss and one sister, Margaret TenBoer.

GEORGE W. MOLDERMAKER , 91, of 1025 7th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, IA. George was born on May 9, 1917 in Fulton, IL to Corneil and Winnie (Ottens) Moldermaker. He attended Fulton grade schools and graduated from Fulton High School in 1935. He went on to attend Scoville Business College in Clinton, IA. He married Ellamae Voss on September 18, 1940 in Fulton, IL. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2008. George worked briefly in Chicago, IL. He returned to Fulton in 1938 and purchased a greenhouse which he ran for 37 years. He ended his working career at Climco Coils Co. in Morrison, IL where he was employed for 5 years. George was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, IL. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Linda K. Miley of Fulton, MO; one son, Larry (Sandy) Moldermaker of Johnston, IA; two grandchildren, Sarah (Mrs. Roy) Rohrbach and Angela (Mrs. Joe) Vogel; two step grandchildren, Mike (Julee) Bruce and Laurie Zimmerman; ten great grandchildren. VIOLET CORDELIA MONKS - The funeral services of Violet Cordelia Monks, little daughter of Mrs. Sylvia Monks was held Saturday afternoon at the M. E. Church with Rev. H. C. Brown in charge of the service. The little one was not quite eighteen months old but had won a large place in the hearts of the people as the large crowd and the abundance of beautiful flowrs testified. The cause of her death was whooping cough which developed into pneumonia and the little body was not able to cope with the latter disease. Burial was made in the Tampico Cemetery.

DORIS (CHESTER) MOSER , 88, passed away in her sleep the morning of Tuesday Aug. 21, 2002, at her home in Sterling following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday Aug. 26, 2002, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls, with the Rev. Peter Wilkinson of the First Presbyterian Church in Sterling officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling. Visitation is from 1-3 p.m. Sunday Aug. 25, 2002 at the funeral home. A memorial has been established. Born Doris Hornedy Chester, she was the firstborn from the marriage in Raleigh, NC of James Brownlow Chester and Minnie Minerva Jordan, which was the second marriage for both. Doris was born March 27, 1914 in Goldsboro NC. Doris' father was a bridge construction supervisor, and Doris lived in 25 states before she graduated from 8th Grade. She graduated from high school in Beloit WI in 1932. Her family was living in Beloit in the late 30's when she met and married Theodore Orville Moore of Oneco IL. They married in Beloit WI on April 3, 1937. Their first son, Jerry Donald, was born in 1938 in Rock Island IL, where Theodore was working at John Deere Tractor Co., and Doris was working at Strombeck-Becker Toy Co. in Moline. Their second son, Roger Norman, was born in 1941 in Beloit WI, where Theodore was working as a tool-and-die maker for Fairbanks Morse Co. He was one of the small crew that assembled the first FM "Trainmaster" diesel locomotive. The family moved from Beloit WI to Dixon IL in late 1945, and Theodore became manager of an appliance store branch owned by his brother, Harold. Their third son, Philip Brian, was born in 1947 in Dixon. Doris worked at the Sterling Public Library for a number of years. She also worked at Sears in Sterling, until she was laid off only couple of months before her scheduled retirement. Doris had older half-siblings, Mary and John Womble, who died 1923 and 1984. She also had older half-siblings James, William and Hannah Chester, who died 1922, 1945 and 1956 in Indiana. Her younger brother, Charles Gaines Chester, died April 29, 1988 in Lake Forest IL, and her youngest brother, Warren Grant Chester, lives in Arvada CO. Her first husband, Theodore, father of her three children, passed away in Sterling on June 23, 1971 at the age of 61. Doris' second marriage was to Paul Moser, who died in 1990 in Sterling. Doris is survived by her three sons, Jerry (and wife, Birgitta), of San Rafael CA, Roger of Sterling IL and Philip of Dixon, and also by her granddaughter, Jennifer Moore of Ladd IL and grandson, Niles Moore, of San Rafael CA and a student at Arizona State University in Tempe AZ, and many nieces and nephews. Her stepson, John Moser, lives in Sterling with his son, John Jr. Doris enjoyed artistic pursuits and made many crafts projects over the years. She was particularly fond of the oil-tinting she did for friends on their black and white photographs, and she loved playing the organ. She was famous for her coffee cakes, had absolutely beautiful handwriting, was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles and enjoyed traveling. She was proud that, two weeks before she gave birth to her first son, she was able to stand on a 6" high step and touch her hands flat to the floor without bending her knees. She also could touch her thumbs to her wrists, and each of her hands could span 13 keys on a piano. Her home and her family were her first priority. She gardened, canned, sewed, embroidered and crocheted. She found time to be a supporter and caregiver to many friends. She was honest and she was loyal. She was a member of the first Presbyterian Church in Sterling, and the Moose Lodge in Sterling, where she loved to dance; and she is on record as being the president of Happy Motors in Dixon. She was loved, treasured and respected, and she will be sorely missed by her family and her many friends. She had a lovely singing voice and it is certain she will soon be joining the angels' choir. Doris died of complications brought on by age, Alzheimer's Disease and a recently broken hip.

PAUL MOSER , 66, of 907 Ave. F. Sterling, died Thursday in the CGH Medical Center. funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Blair Funeral Home, with Rev. S. Roy Kaufman, Science Ridge Mennonite Church, officiating. Visitation will be 10:30-11:30 a.. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Science Ridge Mennonite Cemetery. A memorial has been established. Mr. Moser was born July 3, 1923 in Brookville, son of John and Gladys Lawer Moser. He married Doris Moore on Dec. 12, 1987 in the First Presbyterian Church. He serviced in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946, was employed at Propheter Construction, and also was maintenance man at Rock Falls High School until his retirement. He was a member of the Rock Falls American Legion and the Sterling Moose. He is survived by his wife; one son, John Paul, Sterling; five step-sons, Roy Sharp, Rock Falls, Ronald Sharp, Sterling; Jerry Moore, California; and Roger and Philip Moore of Denver; three step-daughters, Mrs. Jim (Cora) Bellini, Sterling; Peggy Miller, Prophetstown; Martha Knox, LaBelle, Fla.; one grandson; two sisters, Mrs. John (Delores) Fizzy, Rockford; Mrs. Alfred (Hazel) Smith, Polo; one brother, Robert Moser, Rockford.

JESSIE (JONES) MUSSER , 90, 109 6th Ave., Sterling, died Saturday afternoon at Community General Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church of Sterling with the Rev. John Vickrey officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.. at the Melvin-Schilling Funeral Home. She will lie in state from noon till the funeral time at the First Christian Church, Sterling. A memorial has been established in her memory. Born on May 23, 1892 in Woosung, the daughter of Siggle and M. Sophia McPherson Jones, she was united in marriage to John Ernest Musser on Jan. 20, 1908 in Freeport. He preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 1951. She was a seamstress for Klines Department Store for a number of years and a member of the First Christian Church, Sterling. She is survived by one son, James R. Cleabeland, Grand Detour; two daughters Mrs. Donald Cecile Hoover and Mrs. Lester Evelyn Otten, both of Sterling; one sister, Mrs. Pearl Reynolds, Dixon; three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Preceding her in death were one daughter, Helen V. Arnold, two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.
