JOSEPHINE (WALLACE) SAVAGE
, 87, of Sterling died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Sterling Pavilion.
Mrs. Savage was born Dec. 30, 1913, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Edward and Nellie (Hardell) Wallace. She married James Savage on Sept. 23, 1956. He died Sept. 28, 1970. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Sterling. She had a life long interest in art.
A Resurrection Eucharist will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Grace Episcopal Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Judith Jones, pastor, officiating.
Memorials have been established to Grace Episcopal Church, Sterling, and Hospice of the Rock River Valley.
LEO ANTHONY SCULLY
, 62, died Wednesday (16 Jan 1963) at the Community General Hospital in Sterling. He was born in Ohio, Ill., June 13, 1900, the son of John and Jane Scully. He was educated in the Ohio schools and married Marguerite Dillon, April 14, 1926 at St. Mary's Church in Tampico. They resided in Tampico for 35 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and served on the school board for the Maple Hill School for several years. He farmed northeast of Tampico for 36 years.
Surviving are his widow, one son, Leo Thomas Scully at home and one daughter, Mrs. Willard (Marilyn) Monteith of Rock Falls, and one granddaughter, Lynda Diane; two brothers, Edward and George, both of Ohio and three sisters, Mrs. Mary O'Connor of Toledo, Ohio; Mrs. Edward Egan, Deer Grove and Mrs. Harold Johnson, Wyanet.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jack and Frank.
Funeral services will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rosary at the Schmitt Funeral Home in Tampico Friday at 8 p.m Rev. A. M. Weitekamp will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Tampico. Friends may call at the Chapel after 2 p.m. Friday.
JOHN WILLIAM SELLS
was born in Marden, Kent, England, December 29, 1831; died at his home in Garden Plain February 28, 1914, at the age of eight two years and two months.
"Uncle John" as he was called by his friends, sailed from London May 27, 1851. He stayed in ripley, Chautauqua county, New York, until March 6, 1853, then came west by rail to Chicago and by stage from there to Garden Plain, Ill. March 14, 1853.
February 7, 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Adaline Short of Mt. Carroll and nine children were born to this union: Clara, who died in infancy; Mrs. Mary Tuttle of Ralston, Iowa; Mrs Jane Andrews of Clinton, Iowa; Mrs. Lucy Blaser of Maltland, Mo.; William of Grangeville, Idaho; George; Mrs. Mary Cormany at home, and Mrs. Blanche Burch of Helena Mont.
The wife and mother preceded him in death nineteen years ago. He leaves to mourn his death, the eight children, one nephew, Albert Sells of Garden Plain and fifteen grandchildren.
The funeral services were held March 3, 1914 at his home conducted by Rev. Voss of Woodhull, Illinois.
ELLSWORTH G. SHIRK
, 53, 512 E. Wall St., Morrison, a buyer in the purchasing department at General Electric, died Wednesday (23 Jun 1971) at 1:45 p.m. at Morrison Community Hospital after a three day illness. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church with a prayer service preceding the funeral at 1:45 p.m. Friends may visit the Tomlinson Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-9 Thursday. A masonic service will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Paul DeBeer will officiate at the service, and burial will be at Grove Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Shirk was born Sept. 27, 1917 in Morrison, the son of Grover and Myrtle Finnicum Shirk. He attended Morrison schools and Illinois Wesleyen University at Bloomington. He spent his entire life in Morrison. On April 13, 1941, he was married at Morrison to Lola May Twombly. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Moline Consistory, Tabala Shrine, Rockford; the VFW and the American Legion. During World War II he seved as supply sergeant of Company M in the 129th Infantry in the South Pacific.
He is survived by his widow; three daughters, Mrs. John (Betty Raye) Monnett Elgin; Mrs. Gary (Cynthia) Connelly and Jo Anne Shirk, both of Morrison; and one son, William, Morrison; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Shirk, Morrison; and an aunt, Mrs. Blanche Thomas, Geneseo; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Raymond.
HARRY STELTZER
- Funeral rites were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Melvin Funeral Home by the Rev. Luther H. Cooperrider of St. John's Lutheran Church. Mrs. J. H. Linn was organist. The burial was in Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Puckett, Oliver Anning, Nick McGrath, Russell Hicks, Clifford E. Bensinger and George M. Mellott. Lundstrom Florists were in charge of flowers.
WILLIAM H. STONESIFER
- 87, 802 W. 8th St., Sterling, died Tuesday evening (23 Apr 1974) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Saltzman in Hooppole.
The body was moved to the Melvin Funeral Home where friends may call from 7 to 9 Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Melvin Funeral Home with the Rev. Jean W. Saltzman, pastor of the Fourth Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Knoll Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Stonesifer was born August 8, 1886 in Emden, Ill, the son of Daniel and Mary Clawson Stonesifer. He was educated in the Logan County and Sterling schools. For more than thirty years he was engaged in the sale and service of dairy equipment retiring in 1964. He was united in marriage to Edna G. Hettinger Jan. 25, 1911 in Harmon. Mrs. Stonesifer preceded in death Feb 6, 1974. Mr. Stonesifer was a member of the Fourth Street United Methodist Church of Sterling.
Survivors include two sons, William F. Stonesifer of Sterling and Wayne Stonesifer, Carson, Calif.; five daughters, Mrs. Patrick (Lola) McCormick of Van Nuys, Calif.; Mrs. Evelyn Dir of Sterling; Mrs. Earl (Lucille) Saltzman of Hooppole; Mrs. Edward (Madeline) Jansen of Viroqua, Wis. and Mrs. William (Jane) Lee of Pompano Beach Fla.; 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Two broyhers, four sisters and four grandchildren preceded in death. A memorial has been established to Fourth Street United Methodist Church.
