CECIL SANDERS
, 65, of 601 6th Ave., Rock Falls, died Thursday [11/23/1972] evening at Community General Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Allen Funeral Home in Sterling at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Joe Walker, pastor of the Como Baptist Church of Como officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday morning.
Cecil C. Sanders was born on May 6, 1907, at West Frankfort, the son of William T. and Amanda Lefler Sanders. He was united in marriage to Ethel C. Runnels on Feb. 11, 1928 at West Frankfort. He worked in the coal mines at West Frankfort until the mine disaster in 1951 when he was the only lone survivor of the 120 miners. He and his wife moved to Rock Falls in 1955 and he worked at Northwestern Steel and Wire Company until his retirement Oct. 1, 1972. Mr. Sanders was a member of the Como Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Ethel; one daughter, Mrs. James (Norma) Dillingham of Rock Falls; one son Paul R. Sanders of Sterling; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Black of West Frankfort; tow brothers, Carl of Bluford, and Billie Gene of St. Louis, Mo., and four grandchildren.
Funeral Notice:Funeral services were conducted by the Allen Funeral Home in Sterling for Cecil C. Sanders, 601 6th Ave., Rock Falls, who died November 23. Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday [11/25/1972], with the Rev. Joe Walker, pastor of the Como Baptist Church, along with the Rev. Lloyd K. Spencer of Rockford and the Rev. Pickens, a missionary assisted with the services.
Mrs. Roscoe Eades was organist and Mrs. Steve Peck sang “I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone,” accompanied by Mrs. James Dillingham at the organ. Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Meeks sang a duet, “My Home Sweet Home.” The congregation sang “Amazing Grace.” Burial was in Oak Knoll Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gerald Leach, Steven Peck, Leburn Berry, Carl Fitts, Wilburn Longand Carl Pyron. Flowers were cared for by Lundstroms truck. Sanders was the only living survivor of the Effingham Mine Disaster.

JAMES FLOYD SANDERS
, 73, of Sterling died Thursday, June 12, 2003, after an extended illness. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am. Monday, June 16, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Paul C. White, celebrant, officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sterling, and Hospice of the Rock River Valley. James Floyd Sanders was born April 22, 1930, in Dixon, the son of Floyd and Mary (Kent Sanders. He attended grade school in Harmon and Catholic Community High School (Newman) in Sterling. Jim marrried the former Shirley Ladenberger on Feb. 23, 1952, at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He served his country in Navy and Fleet Marine Corps, having attained the rank of hospital corpsman third class, during the Korean War. Jim was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., Sterling, for 33 years, having retired in 1986 as general manager of the wire products division. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sterling, and Sterling Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 326. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; his two sons, Steve (Veronica)Sanders of Sterling and David Sanders of Rock Falls; his daughter, Cheryl (Chris) Feldthouse of Sterling; his brother, Ed (Sally) Sanders of Fort Wayne, md.; his six grandchildren, Shandra Feldthouse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dara (Don) Southard of Romeoville, James "J.D." Sanders and Tracey Sanders, both of Sterling, and Amanda Sanders and Rick Sanders, both of Rock Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant granddaughter, Erica Feldthouse.

MAE (McCANN) SANDERS
, 75, 512 Avenue B., Sterling, died Saturday morning (6 February 1971) in Community General Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be Tuesday morning with a 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the Allen Funeral Home followed by a Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Edward J. Widmer, celebrant, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with the rosary being recited at 8 p.m. Monday.
Mrs. Sanders was born May 1, 1895, in Sterling, the daughter of George and Jo Anna Finn McCann. She was united in marriage to Earl Sanders, October 27, 1917, in St. Mary's Catholic Church and the couple lived their entire married life in this area. Mrs. Sanders was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.
She is survived by two sons Jack and Eugene, both of Sterling; one brother, James Finn, Sterling; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, June 23, 1961; one son Philip (Corky) E., March 9, 1969; and two brothers.

MILDRED (KARR) SANDERS
, 75, of 360o1 16th Ave., Sterling, died Sunday (4 January 1976) at Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Sterling. She was moved to the Melvin Funeral Home where there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at Oak Knoll Cemetery on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Lowell D. Allen, pastor of the Rock Falls United Methodist Church, officiating. Mildred Karr was born Jan. 3 1901 in Rock Island County, the daughter of Omer and Bessie Beal Karr. She was united in marriage to Forrest Sanders in September of 1926 in Rock Falls. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Ray (Irene) Gilman of Rock Falls, Mrs. Merriett (Elva) Clark of Sterling, and Mrs. Keith (Althea) Berkshire of Las Cruses, N. Mex.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest on Dec. 7, 1971; and one daughter, Mrs. Patricia Custer on July 5, 1963

RAYMOND R. SANDERS
, 33, 214 E. 7th St. died Friday Morning (November 17, 1944) at the Home hospital in Sterling where he was admitted a half hour earlier for treatment of injuries received in an accident at the Northwestern Steel & Wire mill, where he was employed. Sanders was pinned beneath a steel plate when it was being moved by overhead cable and a clamp on the cable slipped. Dr. C.M. Frye, Whiteside County corner will hold an inquest this afternoon. Mr. Sanders who had been employed at the mill for the last two years was born July 16, 1911 at Centralia. He was educated at Peoria and Elgin schools and came to Rock Falls in 1936. Surviving him are his widow the former Jennie Bohms whom he married Nov. 6, 1937, his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Sanders of Springfield and two aunts, Mrs. Anna Miller and Mrs. Rose Long both of Clinton Ind. Funeral services will be 2 pm Sunday at Melvin Funeral Home.

ROBERT W. SANDERS , 61, of Lyndon died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center, Prophetstown. Memorial services will be at p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, a the Gibson & Son Funeral Home Prophetstown, Inturmnent will be in the Lyndon Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has beer established. Bob was born Aug. 30, 1941, in Sterling, the son of Donald and Dorothy (Letcher) Sanders. He married Ann Bass of Dixon and she preceded him in 1974. He then married Arlene Gorzny in Lyndon on Feb.28, 1975. Bob was employed for many years as a crane operator for Vern's Farm Systems, Hooppole, and later as a truck driver. He was a member of the Lyndon United Methodist Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Bob was best known for playing Santa Claus for many years for thimerous organizations and groups throughout the area. He is survived by his wife and son, Joseph at home; two daughters, Lisa Hamstra and Mary Chase, both ofProphetstown; two sons, Robert Jr. of Prophetstown and Donald of Polo; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Pat Conkrite of Polo; and nieces and nephews. Also preceding him were his parents; a brother, Bill; and a daughter at birth.
JOHN K. SCHIPPER
, 70 of 1511 Johnson Ave., Sterling died at Community General Hospital Friday evening. Funeral services were held at the First Lutheran Church of Jordan on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Alfred L. Grewe, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.
Mrs. Craig Buhrow played the organ for the service, while Lyle Dirks sang. Pallbearers were: Walter Eden, Lawrence Wetzell, Herman Beveroth, Walter Bauer, Jascob Stouffer and William Woodson. LAURA (ELMENDORF) SCHIPPER
, 80, died Wednesday at the Alma Nelson Manor in Rockford. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Morrison United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Lincolnway Chapel at the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. A memorial has been established. She was born July 22, 1909 in Union Grove Township, the daughter of Levi and Bertha LaDine Elmendorf. She married John Lee Schipper May 3, 1930 in Morrison and he died on May 15, 1974. She was educated in Union Grove Township schools and was a 1927 graduate of Morrison High School. She also graduated from Brown’s Career College in Sterling. Mrs. Schipper was a bookkeeper for her husband at Schipper Standard Service Station and also worked at Paddock Cleaners. She later was employed as a deputy in the Delinquent Tax Office of the County Treasurer. She was a member of the PTA, the Girl Scouts, Morrison United Methodist Church, Faith Circle, and was active in World War II Mothers. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Carolyn) Munson of Rockford; two sons, Robert of Omaha, Neb., Gail of Show Lew, Ariz., six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one brother, Eugene Elmelndorf at Morrison. She was preceded in death by one sister.

, 44, formerly of Erie died in her home in Buffalo, N.Y. Friday evening (22 December 1978). A Memorial service will be held at the Carlton Ullick Funeral Home, Buffalo, N.Y., 2 p.m. Wednesday. The former Suzanne Mercer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mercer, Erie was born March 9, 1934. She attended Erie schools and graduated from Southern Seminary and Junior College in Buena Vista, Va. She received a BS degree in Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. She was a stewardess for American Airlines for 12 years prior to her marriage to James Schoononer on Nov. 5, 1966. , 49, of 407 West 10th Street, Sterling, died late Tuesday evening (6 January 1976) at Community General Hospital following an extended illness. She was moved to the Melvin Funeral home where funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m., G. Jack Schuler will officiate the funeral service and M. Melvin Hough, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Sterling, will officiate the committal service. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m at the funeral home. Ina R. DeWall was born Jan. 3, 1927 in Melvin, Ill., the daughter of T.C. and Mabel Gilmore DeWall. She was united in marriage to G. Jack Schuler on June 3, 1948 in Bloomington. Mrs. Schuler had a Bachelor in Music Degress from Illinois Wesleyan University. She was a studio piano teacher in Sterling for a number of years, a member of Music Teachers National Organization, a member and adjudicator of the Piano Guild of America, a member of Professional Women's Music fraternity and of Sigma Alpha IOTA. Surviving are her husband, G. Jack Schuler, three daughters, Jane Schuler, Amy Schuler and Nan Schuler, all of Sterling, one brother, Earl DeWall of Melvin, Ill.; and one sister, Mrs. Ronald (Hazel) Dodd of Cissna Park, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents.

, 13 month old daughter of David and Helene Young Schulz, died suddenly Wednesday (24 Oct 1984) at Illini Hospital, Silvis. BERTHA ELIZABETH SEYKES
, 85, formerly of 301 South 10th St., Oregon, died early Sunday morning in the Pinecrest Nursing home in Mt. Morris after a long illness. Funeral services for Mrs. Seykes will be Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home in Sterling with Rev. Frank Lay, pator of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Oregon officiating, with burial in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 12 noon until the hour of services. A memorial has been established in her memory to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Oregon and the Pinecrest Nursing home in Mt. Morris.
Mrs. Seykes was born on June 19, 1900 in Harmon, the daughter of John and Emma Schueler Jacobs. She attended local schools and was united in marriage to Ora Seykes on Aug. 7, 1920 in Morrison. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1963. Mrs. Seykes was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Oregon.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clyde (Viola) Lundquist of Mt. Morris and Mrs. Lavonia Ufkin of Walnut; one son, Edward Seykes of Sterling; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter; three sisters, Mrs. Dora Zapf and Mrs. Lena Pashon, both of Rock Falls, and Mrs. Nellie Rhodes of Walnut; one brother, Frank Jacobs of Sterling and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ora, three brothers and two sisters.

ELDON C. SHANK
, 69 of 1611 17th Ave., Sterling died Saturday morning (15 November 1985) at Community General Hospital following a short illness. Funeral services for Mr. Shank will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Science Ridge Mennonite Church in Sterling with Rev. Edwin J. Stalter and Dr. LeRoy Kennel of Lombard, co-officiating with burial in Science Ridge Mennonite Cemetery in Sterling. Visitation will be at the Allen Funeral Home in Sterling tonight from 5-8 p.m. A memorial has been established in his memory. Mr. Shank was born on Dec. 17, 1915 in Sterling, the son of Lewis and Anna Hartman Shank. He was united in marriage to Lois M. Graybill on July 14, 1937 in Freeport. Mr. Shank was a machinist by trade and founded the Shank Machine Company 35 years ago and was still active in the operation of the company at the time of his death. He was a member of the Science Ridge Mennonite Church and an active worker in the church. Survivors include his wife, Lois M. Shank of Sterling; his mother, Mrs. Anna Shank of Sterling; three sons, Duane Shank of Milledgeville, Carl Shank of Sterling and David Shank of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Mrs. Edith Herner of Evanston; nine grandchildren; one brother, James L. Shank of Florida City, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Carroll "Jack".; and one son-in-law, Edwin B. Herner.

ELERY SHANK
, 90, of 109 S. Jackson, Polo, died at CGH Medical Center on Thursday, July 24, 2003. He was born Nov. 23, 1912, to Joseph W. and Mary Edith (Fike) Shank in Sterling, and married Ruth (Hayen) on March 31, 1934. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, at the Polo Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Mel Fike officiating. Interment will be in the Fairmount Cemetery Polo. Visitation will be from 4 to 7p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Benson Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon, Polo.
He was baptized in the Church of the Brethren in Sterling, and later as a member of Milledgeville Brethren Church he taught Sunday school and held several offices before transferring to the Polo Church of the Brethren where he was an active member at the time of his death. Elery farmed, owned and operated the Hazelhurst Stone Quarry, constructed homes in Polo, Mount Morris and Elgin and managed with Ruth, the Public Auction Service Inc. for 40 years. He was active in his community, serving as alderman for the city of Polo, and for 60 years was a member of the Milledgeville Grange where he served as Master, held various offices and chaired the Hall building committee. He was a past member of the Polo Lions Club and a member of the Ogle County Farm Bureau for 60 years. Elery was known as the "Pancake Maker" as he and Ruth served Christmas Day breakfast for more than 200 people for 25 years. He also served pancakes monthly at the Polo Continental Manor. He loved restoring gasoline engines and farm tractors, of which he has several, and enjoyed travel with Ruth and always had a warm smile and a hand shake for everyone he met. Survivors include his wife, Ruth of 69 years; daughters, Shirley (George) Aune of Dixon, Sheryl (Lyle) Hopkins of Polo; daughter-in law, Linda Shank of Polo; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Wendell) Miller, Steven (Kami) Shank, Susan (Mike) Chance, Debbra (Phillip) Ohlwine, Mike Hopkins, John (Susan) Hopkins, Ellen Hopkins, Mark Aune and erick Auen; 13 great grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece. He was preceded in death by his son, Sherwood; a brother, Wayne (Vonda) Shank; and a brother-in-law, William (Sophia) Hayen. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted.
MRS. MILLARD "MICKEY" A. SHANK
, 707 W. 13th St., Sterling, died this morning in Community Hospital after an extended illness. The body was moved to the Melvin Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Melvin Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society. Born Oct. 4, 1904 at Humeston, Iowa, Mrs. Shank was the daughter of Louis and Nancy Miller Hayes. She was married to Millard A. Shank, Sept. 15, 1926 at Rockford by Dr. John Gordon, pastor of the Congregational Church of Rockford. Until failing health, Mrs. Shank was active in the Women's Auxilary of Community General Hospital. Surviving besides her husband are, one brother, Chester Hayes of Sterling. Her parents, one brother and one sister preceded.
MARTIN F. SHEFFLER
- Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Tampico Methodist Church with the Rev. Janet Prous, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Tampico Memorial Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by Tampico American Legion Post #574. Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. at the Garland Funeral Home in Tampico. A memorial has been established.
He was born September 18, 1924 in Sterling, the son of Clyde and Mary Durr Sheffler. He married Verna Lee Denison, August 6, 1954 in Tampico. Mr. Sheffler was a switchman for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was employed by the Rock River County Club Shop in Rock Falls and was serving as the Tampico Village Water Commissioner at the time of his death. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy, and a member of the Sterling VFW.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Steven of Des Moines, Iowa and Craig of Clearwater, Florida, three daughters, Mrs. Wally (Marcia) Ahrens of Yorkville, Ann Sheffler of Largo, Florida, Lisa Sheffler of Tampa, Florida, five grandchildren and one sister Mrs. William (Billie) Bardouski of Largo, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

She was born April 10, 1922 in Lyndon, the daughter of Forest and S. Mary Borwn Lenhart. She married Russell G. Shuman on Nov. 30, 1941 in Davenport, Iowa. Mrs. Shuman was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Polo. Burial will be in the Erie Cemetery where military services will be held. Clayton Sibley was born on May 3, 1919 in the Prophetstown area, the son of Freeman and Anna Johnson Sibley and raised in the Prophetstown and Erie area. On June 19, 1948 he married Marjorie Dillin in Prophetstown. Following marriage they lived in Erie, Lyndon, and had resided in Morrison the past 12 years. In 1981 he retired from Northwestern Steel and Wire, Sterling, where he had worked for 21 years. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, a member of the Morrison American Legion and the Sterling VFW. Surviving are his wife, two sons, Ronald and William, both at home; two daughters, Mrs. Theresa Westlund and Mrs. Larry (Connie) Stewart, both of Prophetstown; one brother, Howard, Morrison, three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Kacker and Mrs. Frances Goss, both of Rock Falls and Mrs. James (Marjorie) Douglas, Sterling; and five grandchildren. Preceding him in death were two brothers.
FRANK CLARK SIBLEY
, 84, retired farmer, died Wednesday (08 Jan 1964) in his home after a year's illness.
Frank Sibley was born July 8, 1879, the son of Charles and Emma Fuller Sibley in Portland Township. He was reared and educated in the Prophetstown area and March 3, 1908 he married Maude Arnett. He had resided in the Tampico area for the last 40 years. He was an active member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, three sons, Donald and Roland of Prophetstown, and Kenneth, Tampico; three daughters, Mrs. Elsie Yarde, Rock Falls; Mrs. George (Dorothy) Rosese, Sterling; and Mrs. Lawrence (Mary) Dimond, Sterling; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, one sister, Miss Grace Sibley, Prophetstown; three brothers, Ralph and George, Prophetstown and Freemon, Erie.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Schmitt Chapel with the Rev. Roger Baumeister of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Tampico Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.
LUCILLE (WOLF) SIBLEY
, 74, Rt. 3, Mt. Carroll, died (24 Oct. 1984) Wednesday evening at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Gardner Chapel, Prophetstown. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the chapel. A memorial has been established. Born July 20, 1910 in Hooppole, the daughter of Alvin and Jessie Lewis Wolf. She was a member of the Calvary E. C. Church, Hooppole. On April 8, 1936 she married Robert Sibley in Forreston. She was a member of the Brown-Swiss Cattle Assocation Canton 2. Surviving are her husband; seven daughters, Mrs. Paul (Audrey) Roman, St. Charles, Mrs. Glen (Arvilla) Springmand and Mrs. Bill (Alice) Young, Rock Falls; Mrs. Carl (Gloria) Grams, Sterling; Mrs. Paul (Loretta) Cassidy, Xenia, Ohio; Mrs. James (Shelia) Price, Urbana, Ohio; Mrs. Keith (Camella) Alexander, Chadwick; two sons, Truman, Mt. Carroll and Gary, Sterling; and 25 grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister.
PAUL SIBLEY
, 48, 505 Ave. C, Sterling, was killed instantly about 5 a.m. Sunday on Rt. 2, three miles northeast of Erie, in a single car crash. Whiteside County Deputy Sheriff Ted Dobers said Sibley apparently lost control of his car, ran off the road and slammed into a utility pole. A passenger in the Sibley car, Mae Gilbertson, 1106 2nd Ave., Sterling is listed in satisfactory condition today at Community General Hospital. It was believed she suffered back injuries. An inquest into Sibley's death will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Schilling Funeral Home in Erie with Whiteside County Coroner John Ardapple in charge. Paul Sibley was born May 25, 1915, the son of Freeman and Anna Johnson Sibley in Prophetstown. He was employed as a maintenance man for teh Coloma Apartments in Rock Falls. Surviving are his father of Erie; two brothers, Howard, Morrison, and Clayton, Lyndon; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Kaecher, Sterling, Mrs. James Douglas, Sterling, and Mrs. Leslie Gwer, Rock Falls. There are also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother in infancy. Funeral services will be held Tuesday in th Schilling Funeral home in Erie. Burial will be in the Erie Cemetery.

- Funeral services for Robert Fuller Sibley were held Sunday afternoon in the Tampico Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Frsot of Sycamore and Rev. Joseph Stoube of Tampico officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. Pallbearers were Donald Sibley, Roland Sibley, Howard Sibley, Kenneth Sibley, Paul Sibley and Clayton Sibley.The Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Stoube sang "When the Mist Has Rolled Away" and "When I Come To The End of The Road", accompanied by Mrs. Glen Carlson. Flowers were arranged by Mrs. Wilbur Gentz and Mrs. George Tuft. Ushers were Glen Carlson and Paul Kaiser.
THELMA (MEISNER) SIBLEY
, 92, of Prophetstown, died Monday, January 30, 2006 in the Hospice Unit of CGH Medical Center, Sterling. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Propehtstown. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Thelma was born Oct. 3, 1913 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, the daughter of Cecil and Lillian (Slaundwhite) Meisner. She married Grant Sibley in Eureaka Springs, Ark. in 1939. He preceded her in death in 1967. Thelma worked for many years as a private duty nurse. Survivors include daughters Elizabeth Maronde, Rock Falls, Priscilla “Susie” Knickel, Prophetstown, sons and daughters-in-laws, Paul and Rosemary Sibley and James and Ruth Ann Sibley, all of Prophetstown, 12 grandchildren, including Dorothy Sibley-Rebert, whom Thelma raised, 22 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
MAUDE DORA (BROWN) SITTER
, 68, of 901 W. 2nd St., Dixon, died Monday evening ( 22 September 1975) at Dixon Public Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Dixon. The Rev. Willard Johnson, pastor, will officiate. The body will then be taken overland to the McCarty Funeral Home in Anna, Ill., for funeral services at 1 p.m. Friday, with burial in the Anna Cemetery. Visitation at the McCarty Funeral Home will be from 10 a.m. to the time of services. Friends may call at the Allen-Buckley from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. Mrs. Sitter was born in Anna, Ill., on March 13,1907, the daughter of Levi and Fannie Millis Brown. She was united in marriage to Troy Sitter in Anna, on Dec. 24. Mrs. Sitter was employed by the Bowman Shoe Store in Dixon for 23 years. She was a life long member of the First Baptist Church in Dixon, she was treasurer of the AMONA Sunday School Class, and she was a member of the Circle No. 1. Mrs. Sitter is survived by two daughters, Miss Jean Sitter of Dixon, and Mrs. Leo (Vernita) Berard of Sterling; one son, Harold Sitter of LaPorte, Ind., one sister, Mrs. Georgia Poopenhagen of Dixon, one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1952, one son, her parents, four sisters, and three brothers.
JULIA W. SMIDEBUSH
, 93, died at the home of her daughter in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held Tuesday with a prayer service at 9:30 a.m. at the Grennan Funeral Home. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Parish Center Chapel with Father Geoffrey Wirth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the wake service being held at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Smidebush was born June 2, 1892 in Emerson, the daughter of Nathaniel and Delila (Wetzell) Reed. She was united in marriage to Albert Smidebush on June 29, 1911.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph, Rancho Mirage, California and John, Moraga, California; one daughter Mrs. Art (Mary Anne) Komula, Green Bay, Wisconsin; 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters.
EARL STANLEY
,87, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Rock Falls, died Nov. 1. Funeral rites and burial were in Phoenix. Mr. Stanley was the last of the family of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Stanley. H was a brother of the last Howard Stanley of Sterling.
FRANK STANLEY
, a well known farmer of Prairieville, passed away yesterday afternoon at three o'clock at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Stanley, of Sixteenth and Locust streets, Sterling.
Mr. Stanley was born at Coleta, July 4, 1894, and moved with his parents to Sterling when he was thirteen years of age. He attended grammar school, high school and Brown's business college here. For the past two hears he and his wife made their home on a farm near Prairieville. He had been in poor health since last winter when he suffered a very severe attack of influenza and about a month ago went to Rochester, Minn. for his health. For the past week he was confined to his bed.
He is survived by his wife, one son, little Billie, two and a half years of age, his father and mother, two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Deets of Emerson, and Miss Jessie Stanley of Sterling, and two brothers, Clark and Donald. His death is mourned by many friends in this community who held him in highest esteem. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the William Stanley home. Rev. J. L. Anderson, pastor of the Fourth Street M.E. church will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. R. V. Callaway, pastor of the Christian church. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. The family has the sympathy of their many friends in this great sorrow.
LYDIA (LINEROLE) STANLEY
was called to Cedar Rapids, [Linn County] Iowa, by the death of Mrs. Lydia C. Stanley, formerly of this city [Sterling], who passed away Sunday [01/26/1930] at her home in that city and was buried there Thursday.
Mrs. Stanley’s maiden name was Lydia C. Linerode, her parents formerly living north of Sterling and she was married to Rev. T. [Thomas] B. Stanley, who preceded her in death. Surviving members of the family are a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Moyer, and a son, Earl Stanley, both of Cedar Rapids.
Rev. T. B. Stanley was a Christian church minister and evangelist and the family lived here for a number of years, going from here to Cedar Rapids about 20 years ago. He was a brother of W. H. Stanley of this city, who was unable to attend the funeral of his sister-in-law on account of illness. Mrs. Stanley was an aunt of Mrs. G. [George] A. [Annetta A. Colcord] Over and she also leaves other relatives in this vicinity, beside many old friends who will be grieved to hear of her passing.
WILLIAM STANLEY
, 19, Formerly of Sterling Loses His Life While Bathing
William Stanley, 19, son of Mrs. Frank Stanley and grandson of W. H. Stanley of Sterling, was accidentally drowned while in bathing in the waters at Geneva on July 4, according to information received here. He was with a party of five couples who had gone in bathing and had been in the water but two or three minutes, when he drowned. It is presumed he was the victim of cramps, as the water was cold, and the shock from high to low temperature possibly disabled him. The water was about seven feet deep where he drowned. The body was recovery by the four boys with him.
The body was taken to a Chicago mortuary. Funeral services will be held in a Methodist church in Chicago Tuesday forenoon at 10 o'clock. The body will then be brought to Sterling and a brief funeral service will be held in Melvin's funeral home at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Committal will be in Riverside cemetery. The casket attendants, minister and singers will come out from Chicago with the body.
Stanley was born in Sterling June 26, 1917, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stanley. His father died when he was one year of age. William was reared in Sterling until he was eight years of age, when he went to Chicago to live. His first schooling was in Central school. He lived with his grandfather, Herbert Brown and his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Reitzel, in Oak Park. The youth was a bright student and had become the designer of aeroplanes in a large plant in Chicago. At the time of his tragedy he was taking a special course in designing and blue printing. Many friends of the young man and his family, in Sterling, are grieved at his death.

A picnic of eight high school students ended in tragedy on July 4th, when William Stanley, a senior in Oak Park high school, was drowned while swimming with his companions in Herrick lake, Wheaton.
Coleman McVickar saw Stanley in distress and went to his aid, later aided by Frank Metcalf of 730 Kenilworth. Robert Noland, 543 Harvey, brought Stanley from the water and although the body was lifeless, artificial respiration was administered with a pulmotor. The victim was taken to the Geneva hospital where he was pronounced dead. An inquest was conducted Sunday at Geneva. Other members of the picnic party who witnessed the accident were Marie Otello, Josephine Smart, June Buchanan and Virginia Lawser. William Stanley was recognized as Oak Park's best model airplane builder, as he won most of the contests held in the village. He won the Oak Leaves contest some time ago, was president of the Oak Park Aero club, former head of the Oak Park High Aviation club, and a member of the Central Gas Model Airplane society of Chicago. "Billie" also took part in the many activities of his church.
Services with music by Herman Larson, presided over by Rev. Hold in the absence of Rev. Kiontz, the pastor of the Austin Methodist church, where William was present every Sunday, were conducted on July 7 at the funeral home, 318 North Central, Austin. Interment took place at Sterling. Ill.
William, the son of the late Frank Stanley, is survived by his mother, Mrs. McCaugherty, Mr. and Mrs. Norman G. Reitzel, with whom he lived 17 years, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert C. Brown and Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Stanley of Sterling, Ill.
ALICE E. STONER
, daughter of William and Mary Atkins, was born in Peekskill, New York, August 10, 1851 and completed her earthly life in Rock Falls, Ill., June 20, 1927, aged 75 years, 10 months and 10 days. She came with her parents to Whiteside county in 1857, later moving to Dixon, Ill.
She united in marriage with Henry Clay Mellon, of Philadelphia, Pa., to this union was born one son, Clay Mellon, who survives his mother. Mr. Mellon passed away a few years after their marriage.
She was united in marriage to Jesse Helter, of Dixon, Ill., June 21, 1882. After Mr. Hetler’s [sic] death she came to Sterling, where she was engaged in practical nursing for many years. In 1914 she united in marriage with Simon H. Stoner, of Rock Falls, where they have since made their home, residing for a number of years at 513 Dixon Avenue. (Remainder not copied)

:Last rites for Albert August Stralow were held Friday afternoon at 1:15 from the home near Lyndon and 2 o'clock in St. Peter's Lutheran church at Morrison with Rev. Theo Dierk officiating. Mrs. John Benters of Lyndon sang. The pallbearers, cousins of the deceased were ALbert Stralow, Carl Bierman, William Waterstreet, Carl Stralow, Frank Gassel and Gus Brandt of Morrison. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Nita Maxfield, MRs. Mildred Chamberlain and Mrs. Edna Holt. Burial was in the Lyndon cemetery.

, 96, of the Four Seasons Living Center, Morrison, IL, died Thursday, January 19, 2006 at the center.Ethel was born December 16, 1909 in Morrison, IL to Albert C. and Katharine H. (Jacobsen) Stralow. She attended the Hildelson Grade School in rural Whiteside County, IL. Ethel was a lifelong resident of Morrison. She had been employed as a lineworker for the Climco Coil Company in Morrison. Ethel was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Morrison. Survivors include one nephew, Stanley Stralow, of Morrison; many great nieces and nephews. , 68, of Sterling, died early Thursday, October 26, 2006 at CGH Medical Center following a long battle with bone marrow cancer. He farmed in the Sterling area for most of his life. Mr. Stralow was born April 10, 1938 in Morrison, the son of Harold and Dorothy (Burkholder) Stralow. He married Linda Woessner on January 25, 1957 in Sterling. He was a member of Harvest Time Bible Church, Rock Falls. Survivors include his wife Linda; three daughters, Cindy Schueler of Rock Island, Beth (Dave) Patterson of Rockford, Janet (Chad) Martin of Maple Grove, MN; one sister, Janie (Dan) Saunders of Monticello, IA; one brother Kent (Marilyn) Stralow of Morrison; his mother, Dorothy Burkholder Stralow of Sterling; seven grandchildren, Rob, Tina, Brody, Gage, Emma, Spencer, Olivia; and three great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his father and two sons, Brad and Scott Stralow. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 30, 2006 at Harvest Time Bible Church with Dalmus Meeks, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at South Clyde Cemetery, Morrison. JOHN E. STRAYER
, 57, of Long Beach, Calif., died Oct. 6, in California. Funeral services were held in Long Beach, Calif. Mr. Strayer was born in Sterling, and attended school in Rock Falls. He served in the Army Signal Corps from 1946 to 1949, then in the Army Reserve Corps from 1949 until 1952. Strayer worked in electronics at the Douglas Aircraft Co. in Long Beach and later at Hughes Aircraft Co. in El Segundo, then was a computer operator at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. He joined Elks Lodge 888 in 1973 and for many years was Exalted Ruler of the Elks Funeral Committee. He had been serving in his fourth year as a trustee of the lodge and was president of its Dome Management Corp. unit. The deceased was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Surviving are his wife, Charlene, one brother, Royce Strayer of Davenport, Ia., and his mother, Emma Strayer of Rock Falls.
JENNIE (BOHMS) SUTTON
, 93 of Rock Falls died Saturday December 22, 2007 at Coventry Village Nurisng Home. She was born on August 13, 1914 in Sterling, the daughter of Fred and Elva (Kelly) Bohms. She married Eugene Sutton on April 11, 1947 in Morrison. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Sterling. Surviving is her husband, Eugene; one daughter Mary (Dave) Miller of St. Louis, MO; one son, Bill (Tina) Sutton of Memphis, TN; one brother Louis (Esther) Bohms of Rock Falls; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday December 27, 2007 at 10 AM in St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling with the Reverend Donald Ahles, Celebrant officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 5-7 PM at the McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls.
ELNA (ERICSON) SWANSON
- Another of Prophetstown's residents of many years was called Sunday in the death of Mrs. Ellen Swanson, 91, who passed away at 10:15 in the morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dubert Dail, near Erie. Mrs. Swanson had been in failing health for a number of years, leaving her home in Douglas St. in 1947 to live with her daughter. The body was brought to Gardner mortuary in this city and services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lutheran Church here of which she was the last charter member. The Rev. Carl A. Bengtson was in charge of the service and Mrs. Everette Wilkinson and Mrs. Ronald Gibson sang, accompanied by Mrs. Dean Gardner, Mr and Mrs. Pierce Moore, Mr and Mrs. Donald Johnson, and Mr. and Mrs. Anton Gibson, assisted with the flowers and the casket bearers were six grandsons, Robert Finnicum and Donald and Roland Dail of Erie, Harold Anderson, Darvin Anderson and Arnold Swanson. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Erick Jonason, Elna Erickson was born at Kristianstad, Sweden, Dec 16, 1858, and was 91 years and 29 days of age at her death Jan 15, 1950. She came to the United States in the spring of 1879, and located at Lyndon, becoming the bride of Peter Swanson of Lyndon at the Prophetstown Methodist parsonage the following December 19. Mr. Swanson had come to America in 1873 and went back to Sweden in 1878 to spend Christmas, bringing his bride-to-be with him upon his return in 1879. The couple started housekeeping in Lyndon, where Mr. Swanson was employed in the paper mill, remaining there until the spring of 1883, when they moved to the Jabez Warner farm and this community has been Mrs. Swanson's home every since until three years ago when she went to make her home with her daughter. Mrs. Swanson was active in her church, serving as one of its first organists, and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She and Mr. Swanson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the church, Dec. 19, 1929, at which time both were in good health. They were the parents of five children of who two sons and one daugther survive their mother. They are Earl Swanson and Carl O. Swanson of Prophetstown, and Mrs. Dubert (Emma) Dail of Erie. One son, John, died March 13, 1948 and one daugther, Esther, passed away April 10, 1917. Mr. Swanson died June 11, 1933.
MARY A. (ERNST) SWANSON
, 91, of the Rock Falls Rehabilitation Center and formerly of Morrison, died Friday at Rock Falls Rehabilitation Center. Pallbearers will be Don Landheer, Al McClain, Dan Quick, Rich Tichler, Scott Tichler and Alex Wade. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. She was born Aug. 10, 1915, in La Moille, Ill., to George and Susan Kummer Ernst. She married George R. Swanson on Feb. 23, 1940, in Clinton. He died in 1999. She was educated in rural Carroll County grade schools. She was employed with General Electric, Morrison, for more than 17 years before retiring in 1976. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, Morrison. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy (Robert) Tiesman of Lyndon, Ill., and Patricia (James) Fax of Onalaska, Texas; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
PETER SWANSON
, passed away at eight o'clock Sunday evening at his home at the age of 81 years. Mr. Swanson had not been in good health for several months. Funeral services will be held from the Lutheran church this afternoon (Wednesday at two o'clock in charge of the pastor, Rev F.J. Carlson. Burial at Riverside cemetery. At the service Rev. F.J. Carlson will sign a solo "Jesus Though My Joy and Comfort", and a quartet composed of Helen and Ethel Anderson Paul Ackeberg and Harold Anderson will sign "Jesus, Thy Name Hath Power to Bless" and "Unto Thee, Lord of All Creation." These vocal numbers were requested by Mr. Swanson. The pallbearers are Frank Ackeberg, Peter Benson, Olof Corsell, August Larson, John A. Larson and C.E. Crone. Mr. Swanson was born in Sweden August 13, 1851, and was 81 years, 9 months and 28 days of age at this death. He came to the United States in 1871 and settled in Illinois. After being here seven years he returned to Sweden for a visit in 1878. Remaining there over winter, he again sailed to American the following spring accompanied by Miss Ellen Erickson. He and Miss Erickson were married December 19, 1879, at the Methodist parsonage in this city. They started housekeeping in Lyndon where Mr. Swanson was employed in the paper mill. After working there three years, they moved on to the Jabez Warner farm where they lived for eight years. Mr. Swanson was then in the employ of the C.B. &Q. Ry. for seven years, working on the bridge crew. They then again returned to farming and again lived on the Warner farm, the Havens farm in Hume and the Judge Ramsey farm. They were on the Warner farm 17 years in all. They moved to Prophetstown in 1918 and this has been their home since. Mr. and Mrs. Swanson were parents of five children. Three sons, Earl G., Carl O. and John W., all of Prophetstown, one daughter, Mr.s Dubert Dail, and their mother survive. One daughter, Esther, died in 1917 in Chicago from an attack of scarlet fever. Deceased is also survived by two half-brothers, John and Swan Pierson of Lancaster, Minn., and eight grandchildren. When Mr. Swanson was 15 years old and was engaged as a sheepherder in his native country, he wrote a book giving his interpretation of the catechism. He was confirmed in Sweden at the same time as the young lady who became his wife. He was a charter member of the Lutheran church when organized here in 1880 and his death marks the passing of the last charter member of the local church.
He held the offices of Sunday school teacher, organist, truste, deacon, janitor and for 21 years secretary of the society. Mr. and Mrs. Swanson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 19, 1929.
WILLIAM M. SWANSON
- Route 1, Garden City, S.C., and a former resident of Sterling, died unexpectedly Thursday (31 January 1971). The body is at the Melvin Funeral Home where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Melvin Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold Olson, pastor of the United Methodist Church at Wilmette, will officiate and burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Mr. and Mrs. Swanson moved to Florida in 1961 where they resided for five years before moving to Garden City, S.C. William M. Swanson was born March 27, 1893 in Whiteside County, the son of Nils and Ane Johanna Jenssen Swanson. He was married to Abbe Sandberg April 1, 1916 at Galesburg. He was a life long member of the Methodist Church and was employed at Hey Bros. Dairy for a number of years and until retirement was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire. Co. Surviving besides his widow are three daughters, Mrs. Eddie (Dorothy) Jones of Jack, Ala.; Mrs. Ward (Florence) Engstrom of East Moline, and Mrs. Richmand (Ruth) Castle of Westminster, Calif.; two sons, William Swanson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Harold Swanson of Haddon Heights, N.J. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Fred (Elsie) Troy of Sandwich, Mrs. L. L. (CatherineI) Doolittle of Anamosa, Iowa, and Mrs. Glen (Edna) Hoover of Placentia, Calif., and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded by two sons, James and Andrew; one sister, Emma Wyman and two brothers, Elmer and Andrew Swanson.

Mrs. Wallace was born Aug. 2, 1935 in Whiteside County, the daughter of Lester and Evelyn Woessner Wolber. She had been a resident of this area her entire life and graduated from Sterling Township High School in 1953. She was united in marriage with Raymond Wallace June 11, 1972 in Sterling. Mrs. Wallace had been employed by Colonial Acres Rest Home for the past seven years and at the time of her death was administrator of Rock Falls Colonial Acres Rest Home. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Sterling. Surviving besides her husband are one daughter, Elizabeth Shuman at home; her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hammelman of Sterling; one sister, Mrs. Millard (Esther) Hicks of Dixon and one brother, Lyle Wolber of Rock Falls. Her father, Lester preceded Jan. 4, 1938 and a daughter Lori in 1964.
Brian K. Shuman was born Sept. 27, 1962 in Sterling the son of Richard K. and Leone M. Wolber Shuman. He was a student in the fifth grade at Franklin School and attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sterling. Surviving are his father, Richard K. Shuman of Sterling; one sister, Elizabeth Shuman at home; his step-father, Raymond Wallace of Sterling; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hammelman of Sterling and grandfather, Paul Shuman of Rock Falls.
Geogory Ray Boroff Wallace was born June 21, 1957 in Sterling. He was a sophomore student at Sterling Township High School and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Rock Falls. Surviving are his father, Raymond Wallace, Sterling; his mother Audrey; a sister Melanie, and a brother, Alan.
