Odell Public Obituary Collection, Morrison IL. Obituary dated 6 October 1933

NICHOLAS ZUIDEMA was found dead in bed at his home west of Unionville on the Garden Plain road Sunday morning (17 Oct. 1948) by his brother Henry, and his nephew, Allan DeGroot. It is thought he died Wednesday evening shortly after retiring. It had been his custom to bring eggs and butter in from the farm to his sister, Mrs. Martin DeGroot on Thursdays, and when he did not bring any in this week she was concerned about him. On Saturday she sent her son Allan out to look for his uncle, but did not see him. Sunday morning Allan went to the home of his uncle, Henry Zuidema, and together they went to Nick's home. The house was locked, but they gained entrance through the cellar door. They found Mr. Zuidema dead in bed. An inquest was conducted by Coroner C. M. Frye of Rock Falls Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The two men told of finding Mr. Zuidema and of calling Sheriff Boyd Kimmel to the residence. The coroner's jury found that death was due to natural causes. Serving on the jury were Glenn Craddock, foreman, George Curtis, Clifford Alldritt, Russell Edlund, Rensis Dyke and Bob Heusinkveld.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Reynolds funeral home. Burial will be in Grove Hill cemetery. Mr. Zuidema was born Aug. 31, 1887 in Ottawa county, Mich., the son of Nicholas and Anna Zuidema. In 1900 he came to Illinois with his parents. His brother Henry came to this community shortly before. Nick worked on farms and for a while operated a taxi cab in Chicago. He opened Nick's Cigar store in Morrison which he operated for about eight years. He retired about three years ago to the residence with 10 acres of land where he was found dead. He was married five years ago to Pauline Halliday who died about two years later. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters, Henry and Marion of Morrison, Cornelius of Fulton, and Peter of Barrington, Fla., Mrs. Martin DeGroot and Mrs. Fred Dykema of Morrison, Mrs. Robert Swandt of Chicago, and Mrs. Anna Pyse of Sterling. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and three brothers, George and Simon and another brother named Simon who died while small. He is also survived by three stepdaughters, Mary Alice, Madonna and Jewel Halliday who are being notified of his death.

At the inquest, Sheriff Kimmel testified to being called to the Zuidema home about 8:30 p.m. by Allan DeGroot. He went upstairs into the bedroom on the south side of the house and there Mr. Zuidema was lying dead. Mr. Zuidema was lying face down on the bed dressed in a sleeping shirt. The bedding was undistrubed, indicating that he had apparently just gone to bed and passed away in his sleep. Mr. Kimmel said he must have been dead for some time. There were no marks of violence. In his opinion he said death was caused by natural causes. Wednesday evening's paper was in the house, but the later ones were outside.
