The Territory now embraced in the county of Wmson, belonged to the county of Franklin, and composed the south half thereof from its organization until the year 1839, when it was cut off the that county and created into a new county in accordance with an act of the General Assembly of the State, entitled, " an Act to establish the county of Wmson" approved 28 Feb 1839. The provisions of this act, providing for the division of Franklin Co, and the establishing of Wmson Co, is set forth in the history of Franklin Co, to which the reader is referred. By said act, Calvin Bridges, of Union Co, Thornbury C Anderson, of Gallatin Co, and Jefferson Allen, of Jackson Co, were appointed commissioners to locate the seat of justice for the county of Wmson. These commissioners were to meet at the town of Bainbridge, and after being qualified, to proceed to locate the said seat of justice, at or as near the center of the county as an eligible site, containing 20 acrres, could be obtained by donation from the owner thereof. In accordance with said act the county of Franklin was divided, and the county of Wmson established, as fully set forth in the history of the former. In Aug 1837, the commissioners appointed to locate the seat of justice, met at Bainbridge on the 3rd Monday of said month, and proceeded to select a site therefor. Byfurther compliance with the act an election was held on the 1st Monday of Sep 1839, for the purpose of electing county officers, and the returns thereof made to William Norris, Sterling Hill and John T Davis then acting as justices of the peace, who met at Bainbridge, made an abstact of the returns, and certified the same tot he Secretary of State. At this election Sterling Hill and Frederick F Duncan were elected county commissioners; John Bainbridge, clerk; John D Sanders, Sheriff; and John Davis, treasurer. Cyrus Campbel, who was one of the county commissioners of Franklin Co before the division, now became by virtue of the act a commissioner of Wmson Co.
