JEFFERSONVILLE JOTTINGS.--Thomas, son of Jackson HARRIS, is quite sick with fever. --Mr. Jefferson BINKLEY lost his youngest child last Tuesday. She has been lingering a long time with pneumonia. --Messrs. LODGE and MITCHELL performed an operation on J.C. BAIAR a few days ago by tapping him for dropsy taking away about four gallons of water. We are happy to state Mr. BAIAR is improving nicely since relieved by the operation.

STONE FORT!--The wife of Marion OSNELL of this place, is about recovered from her illness. --Our friend Henry ROSE of this place who has been on the sick list for some time, is now able to be up a part of his time. --We are pained to say that Dr. B.S. YOUNG is lying at death’s door with pneumonia. Some hopes of his recovery. --The wife of Claiborn HOLMES departed this life Jan. 30, 1878. We tender the bereaved husband and relatives our heart felt sympathy in this their sad hour of distress.

WILSON, Esq. is confined to his bed with pneumonia. --Johnnie CORDER is recovering from a stage of fever. --Mrs. Willis CORDER and little daughter are confined to bed with fever. --Miss Hattie HARTWELL will teach a select school here next summer. --Mrs. D.O. CARTERVILLE CRUMBS.--We learn that Mrs. W.H. PHILLIPS is dangerously ill. --We regret to record the death of Mrs. Freel?nd ALDRIDGE; also the death of Mr. and Mrs. Stinson HALL’s daughter. --On Tuesday our friend Dr. J.M. MCCARTY was 33 years old and in honor of the occasion gave the young people a little hop at his home, and to be sure we had a No. 1 time. the Dr. was feeling good, and he and his good wife, also his father and mother, made everything as pleasant as could be asked; and as all know the young folks of Carterville enjoy a little dance as much if not more than any community in the State. Ask Mr. LUSK, he can tell you something about it. --The bon ton crowd had another dance at Mr. Mike PARROTS, and had a splendid time. Carterville can just discount any city, town or village in the U.S. on getting up a dance on short notice. Not a word was said about dance until have past four in the afternoon, when I heard one young man say to another that Miss Mollie G. was in town and is going home tomorrow and what do you say to a little dance; you know how she enjoys dancing. Enough said, dance it shall be, and dance it was. Ask Mr. G. GAINSBORO, he can tell you all about it. Miss Mollie did not go home the following day so must have another dance that night, which went off first class. Saturday morning, and had had three dances since Tuesday evening. Well said one young man it will never do to stop at an odd number so we have to have one tonight at Mr. SMITH’s and dance until 12 o’clock, which we did and had our usual good time.

IN MEMORIAM.At a regular meeting of Crab Orchard Lodge No. 475. I.O.O.F., held at their Hall 1878, the following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted. --Whereas, In the dispensation of His Divine Providence it has pleased Him the Supreme Architect of the Universe to remove from our lodge below to that Supreme lodge on high, our highly esteemed and affectionate brother, William A. SCOBY, whose record as an officer as well as a private member together with his untiring energy and never failing zeal in behalf of the beloved Order and for those who were distressed has developed in the hearts of his brothers the profoundest sentiments of affection and brotherly love. Therefore be itResolved, That while we with reverence bow to the mandates of that Being whose ways are in scrutible; Who in removing from our midst our beloved brother, we desire to express our deep sense of irreparable loss occasioned by the death of one who with quick perception, and unpredjudiced mind fittingly and sensibly illustrated that benevolent character which constitutes the genuine Odd Fellow. Resolved, that we share a abundantly in the sorrow of the widow, the dear little children, and the relatives of our deceased brother, and that we hereby tender them our heartfelt sympathy and commend them to the protection of Him who has promised to be a husband unto the widow and a father to the orphan. Resolved, That as a suitable manifestation of our grief stricken hearts the brethren of this jurisdiction be requested to wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the lodge, a copy be furnished the widow of our deceased brother and a copy be furnished each of our county papers with request to publish the same. Jno. W. PEEBLES, M.J. BREWER, D.O. ALLEN-Committee.

LOCAL MATTERS.--A slight row, growing out of business complications, occurred last Saturday evening in Goodall & Campbell’s store between Charley CAMPBELL and Mr. John GOODALL. No blood shed. --A little child of Mr. Wash LEWIS, living north of Jeffersonville, pulled a lighted coal oil lamp over on the table and the oil pouring out on the child caught fire and burned all the hair off its heard. The father, with great presence of mind smothered the flames with his hands, and the child escaped with the loss of its hair, and a couple of small burns on the scalp. It was a miraculous escape from a horrible death. --One day last week one of Charley ROBINSON’s daughters found a ltter written by Mat DAVIS and Addie FOWLER, addressed to “Lew” (no other name given.) which had been thrown outside of the jail, telling “Lew” to see two other parties and raise $25 to buy two silversmith saws and a frame and pass them in through the bars and they (the prisoners) would be at liberty in twenty-four hours. The letter stated that the prisoners had a bottle of aquafortis but it wouldn’t work fast enough. After the discovery of the letter Deputy Sheriff HENDRICKSON, States Attorney HARTWELL and Jailer ROBINSON made a thorough search of the jail, but failed to find any tools or the aquatortis. There are four prisoners confined in the jail at present who, with probably one exception, are liable to reach the penitentiary in course of time, and if the letter had reached “Lew’s” hands, would have stood a good chance of escaping. The “Lew” to whom the letter was addressed is supposed to be Louis J. BOREN, lately released from serving a term in jail. A close watch is being kept on the prisoners, and their chances for escape under Jailor ROBINSON are very slim.

ABOUT PEOPLE.--Marion ASKEW is recovered and attending to business again. Lum BENSON, ditto. --Mrs. DAVIS of Decatur, Illinois, is visiting her brother, Mr. Samuel CAMPBELL near this city. --A little child of Mr. and Mrs. T.J. BINCKLY, aged 6 months, died Tuesday of last week, January 29th, of bronchitis and pneumonia. The little one suffered terribly for two months until released by death. The parents have our deepest sympathy.
