LOCAL MATTERS--Gov. BEVERIDGE refused to exercise the pardoning power in behalf of Sam. MUSIC. Thus Samuel will remain in retirement yet another season. --The county records only show 166 marriage licenses issued in 1876. This is a bad showing for leap year. We predict that 1877 will be more prolific of such documents than the past year was. --Miss Mattie CAMPBELL, sister of Jas. M. CAMPBELL of this city, is very sick. --Mr. Isaac MCCOY has been confined to his room for ten or twelve days with pneumonia. He was, when last heard from, improving. --Our young friend, W.J. WESTBROOK, left this week for Ann Arbor, Michigan, to attend college. We bespeak a bright future for Will. --H.C. MITCHELL returned to the Chicago Medical College last Tuesday to resume his studies. He has been spending a few days of recreation with his friends at home. --Dr. B.R. FELTS, of Lake Creek, is at home spending the holidays during the vacation of the Missouri Medical College, of which he is at present a student. He returns to St. Louis today to resume his studies. --Dr. D.R. SANDERS, of Grassy, called at the Monitor office Monday. The Dr. is at home spending the holidays during a vacation of the Ohio Medical College, of which he is a student. He returned to Cincinnati last Tuesday, and will receive his diploma at the expiration of the present term. --A communication from Attilla, and resolutions of regret for the death of John G. WILLIAMS, were received too late for publication this week.

LOCAL MATTERS--The residence of James HOWELL at Blairville, caught fire a few days ago and came near being destroyed . The water in the wells gave out and the Big Muddy river was resorted to. In extinguishing the flames Mr. HOWELL had his coat burnt off his back and his body severely blistered. --Miss Lizzie GRAY, of Vienna, is visiting her brother, Dr. BLAY of this city. --Circuit Clerk STRIKE is suffering from an attack of fever. --Dr. R.M. HUNDLEY has been quite sick for a few days. --Mr. Wm. J. AIKMAN, of the firm of GOODALL & AIKMAN, has been suffering from a sever spell of sickness this week. --Mrs. STROUD, wife of Daniel STROUD, died in this city Tuesday night. --Governor BEVERIDGE refused to pardon Terry CRAIN, and his case goes over to Governor CULLOM for future action. --Miss Mattie CAMPBELL, whose sickness was noted last week, is convalescing. --Messers. Joab GOODALL and Johnny WHITE returned to school Monday at the Southern Illinois Normal, Carbondale. --Mrs. Mollie CAMPBELL, who has been very low for some weeks past, is slowly regaining her health. --Master Eddie GOODALL has been very sick for some days, but is, we are glad to learn, out of danger at present writing. --Mrs. M.E. GODDARD has been quite sick the past week.

W. YOUNG, fell and received a severe cut on the forehead Monday morning last. --Featherstone DOTY has been appointed and commissioned Justice of the Peace to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Wm. S. CALVERT.--Mrs. Hulda ROAN met with a painful accident Saturday last slipping from the door step of H.T. GODDARD, breaking her ankle bone and otherwise bruising her body. Medical assistance was called and she is now comfortable as possible under the circumstances. --Married at the residence of the bride, near Corinth, Ill., Jan. 16, 1877, by Rev. R.W. LAUGHLIN, Mr. Wm. NIX and Miss M. Lou SPINNING. --Master E.D. STEVENS, aged 8 years and 6 months, died Tuesday night Jan. 16th. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the family residence by Rev. T.J. DAVIS. The sympathy of the entire community is with the bereaved mother in this great sorrow, but he only can comfort her who said: suffer little children to come unto me.

NEELEY, J.P., Mr. Able T. HOWARD and Miss Sarah C. HAMLETT.--Willis AIKMAN, Jr. , has recovered from his attack of sickness and is now attending to business as usual. --Mr. E. A. PHILLIPS has been confined to his room for several days past with typhoid and pneumonia. --Dr. J.H. MITCHELL, carries his hand in a sling having crushed it letting fall a load of wood thereon. --G.F. HENSLEY and J.T. DUNCAN and families removed last Friday to Benton, Franklin county, and the Monitor follows both families to their new homes. --Henry ACHELTREE and Abraham GLOSS, both colored were arrested last Tuesday night, charged with stealing two hogs from Henry GRAY.
