LOCAL NOTES.

--Jim LEWIS (colored) was arrested Tuesday last and fined for carrying concealed weapons. Being unable to pay his fine of give security, he was sent to the county jail.

--Dr. EDWARDS and Mrs. DOUGLAS were married Tuesday at Carbondale.

--The beautiful and accomplished Miss Annie ELSTUN, of Du Quoin, daughter of Judge ELSTUN, is visiting her cousin Miss Emma BENSON.

--Mrs. Stephen MCSPARIN died on the evening of the 20th ult.

LOCAL NOTES.

--The fair was a grand success.

--It is estimated that fully 7,000 people attended the fair on Friday.

--T C WATKINS has gone into partnership with KINGERY in the blacksmithing business in the Slankard shop.

--There were seven entries in the baby department for the premium clock. The prize was awarded to Master Erbin HELTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. TJ HELTON.

--In the green two year old race at the Fair ground Saturday Elias BRACK’s filley flew the track on the north side and ran into a wagon, throwing the rider, a boy named Elliott, breaking a rib, and otherwise seriously injuring himself.

--To have seen Tom HELTON strutting around the fair ground last Friday, an unitiated person would have supposed that he had fallen heir to a million dollars. But he hadn’t. His baby had been awarded the premium clock, and of all the proud young fathers in the universe Tom was the proudest. We rejoice with you, Tom, and hope the young premium taker may grow up as steady as a clock, always on time and never too fast.

SOCIETY AND PERSONAL NOTES.

--Mr. and Mrs. Harvey HOWELL have a very sick child.

--Mr. Mrs. J.M. BURKHART’s little girl has been very sick the past week.

--Miss Minnie WHITE, Miss Lou MITCHELL, Miss Addie FELLOWS, Miss Mollie PERRINE, Will H. CAMPBELL and others of our young folks took up schools last Monday in various districts in the county. They all are reputed good teachers and we shall expect to hear a good report from each one.

--Wednesday night of last week, at the residence of James M. CAMPBELL, of this city, Rev. T.J. DAVIS united in the bonds of matrimony Mr. H.U. SHAKLEFORD and Miss Mattie CAMPBELL. Both Mr. SHACKLEFORD and his fair bride are numbered among our most esteemed friends, and we extend congratulations and hope that their married life may be prosperous and happy. Thanks for a generous supply of elegant cake. The young couple have taken up their residence in Crab Orchard where they will reside during the winter, Mr. S. being the principal of the school at that place.

--On Tuesday evening, oct. 1, Rev. T.J. DAVIS, of the M.E. church of Marion united in marriage J.H. EDWARDS of Marion and Mrs. Harriet DOUGLAS of Carbondale. The wedding took place at the residence of the bride. A numerous company was assembled and enjoyment ruled the hour. A splendid supper was spread, which the guests, one and all, enjoyed. The newly wedded visited Marion and attended the fair. They will domicile themselves in their pleasant home bear this place. *Carbondale Free Press.

JEFFERSONVILLE JOTTINGS.

--Mr. Berry BURK of Tamaroa, is visiting his brother Thos. BURK of this place.

--Samuel JONES has sold his farm east of town to Alonzo DURHAM. This trade we predict will lead to a wedding soon. Lon always said he would get the cage first and then look for a bird.

--Married by Esq. YOUNG on the 3d inst., W.P. PIKE to Miss M.E. HILL. We congratulate them.

--Dr. SHEELY, late of Crab Orchard has located in our place.

LOCAL MATTERS.

--R. BORTON has leased the McInturff mill, and will take possession Monday next. We understand that Mr. B. is an experienced hand at the business, and will devote his whole attention to the mill.

CRAB ORCHARD.

--The mother of our esteemed friend Dr. MCDONALD is lying at the point of death; no one expects here to live but a short time on account of which Dr. MCDONALD is being detained from his school in St. Louis, where he anticipates attending the lectures the coming winter.

--It is a boy of standard weight at John W. PEEBLES. Mother and child doing well and father happy.

--Mr. H.U. SHACKLEFORD, principal of our school was united in matrimony with Miss Mattie M. CAMPBELL, Oct. 2, ‘78, at the residence of J.M. CAMPBELL, Marion. The best wishes of Crab Orchard go with him and his estimable bride through all future life.

STONE FORT.

--Our old friend Frank MILES, formerly of Dixie Minstrels, has again returned to the sweet quietude of village life. But he can still sing “Down the Rive, down the Ohio,” with perfection.

--J.W. ROSE has had the mumps the past week, but to his great joy, is convalescing.

LOCAL NOTES.

--Dr. M.M. MCDONALD, of Crab Orchard, left Monday evening for St. Louis where he will attend medical lectures during the winter.

--We are informed that the Russell school house was burned last Saturday night or Sunday morning. There had been a greenback meeting there Saturday.

--Mr. and Mrs. DUNSTON have a very sick child.

--Mrs. W.T. DAVIS, wife of the Democratic candidate for Sheriff, is reported at the point of death.

--Burnside correspondence of Vienna Journal: Our old friend and townsman, Don STEPHENS, died at his home near Marion, on last Monday.

--Rev. RANSOM, the new Methodist pastor, and family, have arrived in the city.

--Mr. F. M. WESTBROOK of Evansville, Ind., is in Marion this week among old friends. He talks of returning here to live again.

--Mrs. Becky SPARKS is very sick.

--rev. L.J. SIMPSON has located in Marion.

--The population of Williamson county is increasing steadily. Mr. and Mrs. J.P. COPELAND, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. WILLEFORD and Mr. and Mrs. Dr. J.M. FOWLER have had additions to their families the past few days.

JEFFERSONVILLE JOTTINGS.

--Mr. Joseph BURK informs us that he has bought a farm near Frankfort, and will soon take up his residence on the same.

--Mrs. W.J. DUNCAN is now lying in a critical condition. She is under the care of Dr. TITTSWORTH who is untiring in his efforts to win her from the grave.

--Mr. and Mrs. John BROWN and Mr. and Mrs. John MARTEENY took their departure for Kansas, overland, last week. They contemplate making an extended visit among friends in that State.

--Dr. TITTSWORTH has resumed the practice of medicine and holds himself ready to attend all calls. This will be gratifying news to the public. Dr. TITTSWORTH as a physician was a great favorite with the public.

--Mr. SHEELEY our new doctor is now one of us, as he has moved his family into our place and is ready for practice. We are informed that Dr. SHEELEY is a graduate and has two diplomas. We hope to see him build up a good practice.

--Bev NOLL has a sick child.

--Mrs. Zeke RAY is on the sick list.

--John DAUB lost a child last Wednesday week with spinal menengetis.

LOCAL MATTERS.

--A little child of Mr. and Mrs. DOWELL is lying very low with fever.

--T.C. WATKINS, of Jeffersonville, has moved to Marion and is located in C.M. KERN’s house.

CIRCUIT COURT-OCTOBER TERMS.

--Geo. W. WINGFIELD was tried by jury in two cases for selling whiskey. First case the verdict was not guilty. No two the jury failed to agree and was discharged, dependant plead guilty in two cases, in each the Court assessed the fine at $20.

--Wm. MCCALL was tried on an indictment for an assault to murder, Acquitted.

--The famous Pond creek cattle case in which the People are plaintiffs and James CARR is defendant, is at this writing before the court.

CRAB ORCHARD.

--The mother of Dr. MCDONALD, of whom we spoke as being very low and not expected to live, is slowly recovering, and will in all its probability regain her health.

--Dr. M.M. MCDONALD left for St. Louis Monday morning, where he will attend lectures the coming winter, and in the Spring aims to return a full fledged M.D. and again take up the large practice which he now leaves in the hands of our three excellent physicians, Drs. HUDDLESTON, SCOTT and CARSON.

--Married, at the residence of the bride’s mother, at 4 p.m. Sunday evening, Mr. John MCCLUSKY to Miss Julia EDWARDS. The ceremony was performed by Esquire BURNETT. The young and handsome couple have our warmest congratulations, and we hope that all their future life may be one of un interrupted happiness and prosperity.

LOCAL NOTES.

--Mrs. Major WARD, of Carbondale has been visiting her sister, Mrs. John A. ENSMINGER, the past week.

--Mr. Elijah SPILLER, with M. CANTOR, Clothier; has rented the Mrs. WILEY property on East Street, and will move his family to town soon.

--Miss Katie SCHUEY entertained a select party of young people Saturday night last, at the residence of Shannon HOLLAND. We learn that it was a very pleasant gathering.

--Mr. Henry FULLER left in our office last Friday the longest stalk of corn probably ever grown in this county or anywhere else. From end to end it measured 15 feet and 7 inches; from the ground to the ear 9 feet 9 ins. Mr. FULLER believes it to be the tallest stock ever raised in this county, He also says it is a sure indication that CAPLINGER himself will be the next Sheriff.

--J.T. OTEY, of the firm of Otey Bros., has sold his interest, and the style of the firm is now OTEY, ROBERTS & Co. Mr. ROBERTS is now in Colorado and will not be here until some time in November. Tom says he regrets very much to leave Harrisburg, but the death of his father in law, Mr. EDWARDS, of Williamson county, compels him to give up business here and return to that county.*Harrisburg Sentinel.

--Mrs. Becky SPARKS is slowly recovering her health.

--Mr. and Mrs. DUNSTON’s youngest child died Wednesday of last week.

--Mr. and Mrs. Wm. DOWELL lost a child by death last week.

--Mr. STUHL, of the Marion marble shops, has moved into the Bainbridge property on East street.

--The Monitor was presented with a magnificent boquet of fall flowers last Friday. It was very beautiful, and to Miss Susie HENDRICKSON we are indebted forever.

--Last week Dr. J.M. FOWLER brought to this office one of the largest specimens of the sweet potato family we have ever seen or heard tell of. It measured 28 1/2 inches in circumference, and weighed 12 pounds and 4 ounces.

--Mr. Laban CARTER, of Carterville gave us a pleasant call last Monday. The old gentleman is hearty and healthy, enjoys life thoroughly and has unbounded confidence in Carterville’s future.

--KIBBY has moved his barber shop to the east side of the square.

--James M. CAMPBELL, for seven years with GOODALL & CAMPBELL, closed his connection with that house last week.

--Mrs. YESKY of New York, mother of Mrs. M. CANTOR, is spending a few weeks in Marion.

--Mrs. M.P. MITCHELL of Grayville, is visiting in Marion at present, the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Mollie HOWELL.

STONE FORT ITEMS.

--W.J. RIDGEWAY has been attending court at Marion the past week. Bill returned home yesterday and says he enjoyed himself first class in Marion all week.

--Aaron HALL, one of the students of Stone Fort school has been behind the counter at Ridgeway’s drug store the past week. Mr. H. is a good salesman, and though young as he is, manifests good business qualities.

LOCAL NOTES.

--J.M. BURKHART visited Chicago last week.

--Mr. and Mrs. J.M. CAMPBELL are visiting in Harrisburg.

--Mr. John BOLES of Southern precinct, died last Monday.

--Its a girl, and M. CANTOR is the happiest and proudest father in all this land.

--Tom BELCHER, of Lake Creek was in the Monitor office last Saturday. He has been indisposed since the fair, but is himself again.

--A.F. WHITE started to Chester last Monday, with James CARR convicted at the late session of Circuit Court on an indictment for stealing cattle. CARR goes for one year and then returns to answer to other indictments of the same character.

--Last Saturday afternoon, between three and four o’clock, a shooting scrape took place on the west side of the square, between Jim PULLEY and Junior PRICHETT, in which PRICHETT was slightly wounded. Some five or six shots were exchanged, one only doing any harm. PRICHETT receiving a bullet in his side. We are unable to learn the cause of the row. PULLEY was arrested and bound over in the sum of two thousand dollars for his appearance to answer to a charge of assault to murder. The ball was extracted from PRITCHETT Sunday morning and he is doing as well as could be expected under the circumstances.

--Circuit court adjourned Saturday last. Only one man, CARR, the cattle thief, was sent to the pen.

HALL SCHOOL HOUSE

--Mrs. Samuel TANNER is quite low at this writing, also Stephen TANNER quite low, with heart disease.

--John WRIGHT talks of leaving us shortly, to locate in Arkansas.

--Quite a sensation was created in this section last Monday, by constable MOFIELD replevying stock and house plunder from George ROBINSON, claimed by the rest of the heirs to belong to the estate of Mary ROBINSON.
