That this defendent is unable to per--h means to have said witnesses brought to this court. He therefore asks that the governement provide the attendance of these witnesses for him. Sir, I revieved Bench Warrent for A Stubblefield at a time when I could not leave jail excitement being very high and then my father died. Since which left me in a condition that I could not look after Stubblefield till yesterday. He has left and gone to Kansas. I suppose from the best I can learn. I will still watch for him if he comes back. I will try and arrest him at any rate. Enclosed you will find Bench Warrent with no return. Yours John H Culley

We Pleasant Veach as principle and GB Veach as sureties, of the county of Johnson and State of Illinois, acknowledgr ourselves to owe and be indebted to the United States of America, in the penal sum of 1000 dollars, to be levied of our respective goods and chattels, lands and tenements, subject however to the following condiction, to-wit: if the said Pleasant Veach shall personally be and appear before the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of Illinois, at the next term thereof, to be held in the City of Springfield on the 30 th day of June next, to answer unto the United States in an indictment for Conspiring, banding together and going in disguise upon the premises of another with intent to injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate citizens of the United States and for murder in such acts, and not depart the Court without leave, then this recognizance to be void, otherwise to remain in full force
