Esther A. Uphoff

The funeral of Esther A. Uphoff, 96, of 627 W. Fourth St., Minonk, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Minonk. The Rev. Daniel Gansch-Boythe will officiate. Burial will be in Minonk Township Cemetery, Minonk. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, and for one hour before the service Friday at the church. Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home, El Paso is handling arrangements.

She died at 10:45 a.m. Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Minonk.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 236 W. Fifth St. Minonk, IL 61760; or Heritage Manor Nursing Home, 201 Locust St., Minonk, IL 61760.

Mrs. Uphoff was born Feb. 26, 1905, in Rutland, a daughter of Frank and Josephine Mernitz Oldenburg. She married William R. Uphoff April 27, 1927, in Rutland. He died Feb. 20, 1985.

Survivors include a son Robert (Margy) Uphoff, Minonk; five sisters, Ruth Oldenburg, Lucille Oldenburg and Lillian (Dean) Janssen, all of Minonk; Leora (Merle) Sullivan Arlington, Iowa; and Edith Driscoll, Chicago; and one brother, Arthur (Rosemary) Oldenburg, Rutland; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The grandchildren are Scott (Brenda) Uphoff and Laura (Steve) Mahnke, both of El Paso; Randy (Terri) Uphoff, Minonk; and Chuck (Sandi) Uphoff, Mt. Carmel.

Her parents; one son, Richard Uphoff; and three brothers, Robert, Carl and Walter Oldenburg, preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Minonk; where she taught Sunday School for seventeen years. She also was a member of the Willing Workers and St. Paul's Ladies.

She and her husband were life-long farmers in the Rutland and Minonk areas.

Joseph Villger

Joseph Villiger, 71, retired blacksmith and an esteemed citizen of Metamora for 39 years, died at his home in Metamora at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday. Though he had been suffering from a heart ailment for some time, he became seriously ill only two weeks before his death.

He was a progressive citizen, much interested in the upbuilding of Metamora, during his years here erecting a new resdience and a shop building and being a large contributor toward the paving of the two blocks west of the north side of the square to the railroad.

Wait B. Uphoff, 92, formerly of Panola township, died at 10:05 a.m. Friday at St James hospital in Pontiac. He had been ill three months. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wilcox-Folkers Memorial Home in Minonk, with Rev. Clarence Gess, pastor of St Paul's Lutheran Church in Benson, officiating. Burial was in the Minonk cemetery. The pallbearers were Leroy Woltzen, Eiden Koopman, Dean Gray, Donald Gray, Clifford Bachman and Paul Janssen. Mr Uphoff was born April 27, 1868 in Clayton township, Woodford county, the son of Bernard and Rosena Woltzen Uphoff. He was married on Aug. 26, 1890, in Benson, to Rena Oltman, who died Feb. 20, 1949. Following his marriage, he was engaged in farming in Clayton and Panola townships. He was a charter member of St Paul's Lutheran church in Benson. He is survived by a son, John, of Panola; five daughters, Mrs Sena Woltzen of Long Point; Mrs Edna Timmerman and Mrs Osie Bachman of Minonk; Mrs Mae Gray of Tonica, and Mrs Louise Janssen of Rutland.
Three sisters, Mrs Gertrude Reents of Lindenwood, Ill.; Miss Elma Uphoff and Mrs Marie Hurd of Benson; two brothers, Henry of Benson, and John of Flanagan; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. Three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Fred Uphoff

METAMORA - Fred A. Uphoff, 86, formerly of Metamora, died at 4:38 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Morton Villa in Morton.

Born Oct. 14, 1914, in Benson to Jake and Nora Wieldt Uphoff, he married Miriam Braun on Feb. 11, 1941, in Lowpoint. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Amy (and Richard) Waldschmidt of Metamora; two sons, Stephen and Robert (and Connie), both of Metamora; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elma (and Vivian) Hattan of LaRose and Violet (and Eugene) Ely of Peoria Heights. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

He was a World War II Army veteran. He worked in construction and also worked at C.A. Powley Sand and Gravel for 16 years before retiring.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Germantown Hills Baptist Church. The Rev. Don Whitman will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mason Funeral Home in Metamora and one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Buckingham Cemetery in Washburn.

Memorials may be made to Harbor Light Hospice or any charity.

Miriam Uphoff

MORTON - Miriam J. Uphoff, age 87, of Morton, formerly of Metamora, passed away at 6:22 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at Morton Terrace Care Center.

She was born June 29, 1920, in Washburn, Ill., to David and Amy (Gifford) Braun. She married Fred A. Uphoff Feb. 11, 1941, in Lowpoint, Ill. He passed away May 23, 2001.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen Uphoff and Robert (and Connie) Uphoff, both of Metamora; one daughter, Amy (and Richard) Waldschmidt of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Miriam was a homemaker and a member of the former VFW post in Metamora.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at the Mason Funeral Home, Metamora Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Fields officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and also one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Buckingham Cemetery in Washburn, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harbor Light Hospice and or the donor's choice.

Erma K. Vissering, 93, of Flanagan died at 7:42 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 27, 2008) at the Good Samaritan Home, Flanagan.

She was born Jan. 19, 1915, near Minonk, the daughter of Carlos and Josephine Bellatti Gaspardo. She married Allen Vissering on Oct. 11, 1940, in Nashua, Iowa. He died Sept. 1, 2000.

Surviving are three daughters, Marian (Otis) Ruff of Streator, Arlene (John) Martin of Flanagan, and Judy (Jeff) Wahls of Chenoa. She has three grandsons, John (Nichole) Martin, Allen Martin, and Austin Martin, all of Flanagan and also several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.  Erma was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Flanagan, and the W.E.L.C.A. sewing group. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting. Erma was a loving mom and grandma who enjoyed spending time with her family.
