History of School

Lowpoint has always prided itself in being progressive especially in respect to its schools. As far back as the '70's the higher education of Lowpoint was expressed in the pioneer spirit of some of Illinois best citizens. In the early '70's and some time before, it was felt by the citizens of the community that it would be well to have some form of higher education beyond that of the common school system. The pioneer settlers of the community being in sympathy with this movement, accordingly in the year 1874 built what was known as the Lowpoint Academy. The purpose of the school was to provide higher educaiton for the youth of the community without the necessity of their leaving home and home influence. The principal of the Lowpoint Academy was Mr. J. E. Lamb who afterwards became Co. Supt. of Schools in Woodford Co.

The success of the Academy was shown in the fact that it attained great popularity and became known over a large section of the country. The popularity of the school continued until the late '70's when unfortunately it was destroyed by fire. The settlers feeling that they could not afford to rebuild the Academy, it ceased to exist.

The present Lowpoint Township High School was organized in the year 1915. The present fine building was built in the year 1916. The school was organized on a two-year basis and continued so until the year 1921 when it was organized on a full four-year basis.

In the fall of 1926, under the administration of Principal Messamore, the High School attained full recognition. The scope of the school has been widened. A new and up to date laboratory has been provided, also a new Domestic Science Laboratory has been installed, which on account of its uniqueness received the commendation of the State Supervisor of High Schools. Manual Training is also offered in the High School curriculum.

With a community of progressive citizens we may expect our High School to go upward, keeping pace with the lates progressive ideas in education.
